Advice wanted on SD Card to IDE Interface with front-loading slot
« on: September 20, 2018, 06:25:56 PM »
I'm planning what expansions to add to my A1200 when I get a chance, and one idea I have is to add an SD Card slot, using an SD-to-IDE adapter. This plan is purely to use it to transfer files, rather than as a bootable drive.

If I add an SD card reader, I want to use one with a front-facing slot so I can mount it in a drive bay in a a tower and make a face plate for it. There are a few SD adapters available, like the one in the link below, with this configuration but is there anything I need to look for which will prevent them being compatible with an A1200 and 4-way IDE interface?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SD-SDHC-SDXC-MMC-Card-IDE-40Pin-3-5inch-Male-Adapter-I4A6-/282978961741

Thanks.

Hi there Andy, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're asking if any of these have incompatibilities with an A1200? No, not really, most all of these, especially with a generic 4 way adapter, just work. I'm pretty sure you will not have any problem at all.

One thing I might suggest is to search the forums a bit to find out what type, size and brand name SD cards people are using that would ensure the least amount of troubles.

Another thought is, are you planning on using it with the Amiga file system or DOS (for file transfer from a PC)? That would be a whole different subject and would require adding DOS file capability to your Amiga.

What OS are you planning on using?

A500: 2MB Chip, 8MB Fast, IndiECS, MiniMegi, IDE4ZorroII on Z-500, KS1.3/KS3.1, WB3.1&BWB

A1200: 2MB Chip, 64MB Fast, 4GBCF, GVP Typhoon 030 @40MHz w/FPU, Subway USB, EasyNet Ethernet, Indi AGA MKI, FastATA MK-IV, Internal Slim CD/DVD-RW, WB3.5

Thanks for the reply.

I plan to use Fat95 for the filesystem because file transfers would be from a PC. I know there's a Fat95 filesystem I'd have to install on the A1200.

Good to know that the adapters are likely compatible and thank you fot the advice on SD cards.

Thanks for the links.

I like the one with the bracket, I could convert it to a faceplate.

I know that SD cards can be a but finicky from having a Raspberry Pi.

Just use quality SanDisk SD cards (not bootleg ones) and you wont have any problems.

Have a look at aliexpress, dealextreme or any other chineese sites...
i have quite a few adapters from them. both CF and SD

i did however have problems.
- My buddha only accept trueIDE. for unknown reasons. i use the trueIDE and are quite happy with it.
- My A1200 are comfortable with most adapters. but are WERY picky about the card used. and like stated in another thread, go with sandisk. real sandisks.
it was a PITA to get the a1200 to identify and format SD/CF cards. but when formatted it did not matter much wich adapter i used.....
It is sort of a trial by error to get SD/CF to work with amiga 1200, but it usually works quite well when you get past the initial identifying and formatting....

PS: most if not all of adapters sold (cheap) on ebay are chineese copys of other adapters. bot most of them works. and no use in buying them from ebay when they are available at the source.
