Amiga Kit stocks new Vampire v500 v2+ from Apollo Team
28th May 2017

AMIGA KIT Amiga Store is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with the Apollo Team to retail the Vampire branded accelerator cards to our worldwide customer base.

We have already received a limited amount of Vampire v500 v2 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1304) stock and this has been added for sale.  We are hopeful of more stock arriving shortly in the next month.

The new accelerator is powered by the Apollo/68080 Core which is the natural and modern evolution of latest 680x0 processors. It's 100% code compatible, corrects bugs of 680x0 designs and adds on top most of the cool features which were invented the years after.

Apollo core : a game changer
Back in the 80s, Motorola was leading the market with his 680x0 CISC processors range, selling it to big companies like HP, Apple, Atari, Commodore, NeXT, SEGA and others. Today, 680x0 is still used by industrial machines, planes industry, cars vendors and is still used by retrocomputing fans around the world.

When put in an FPGA, the Apollo offers a good combination of moderate FPGA space consumption and excellent performance.

Apollo surpasses the performance of 68060 ASIC by far - even when only using low cost FPGA.

Performance Amiga-land deserves
Bored of tiresome 68020 performance, or the expense of  68060 accelerators and not feeling the same emotions with emulation? Apollo core resolves all those topics!

The Apollo accelerators are faster than a 68060 at 100MHz, delivering more performance to Amiga than ever before.  It now makes web browsing, listening to MP3 music, watch videos a more enjoyable experience.

In addition each card can output 32-bit video through RTG and SAGA drivers.

The Apollo core on the FPGA can be upgraded from periodic updates release by the Apollo Team.

In response to the news, AMIGA KIT Managing Director Matthew Leaman said: "We are thrilled to stock and support these exciting and innovative products from the Apollo Team.  In 2017 it is amazing to see the hard work and dedication that has gone into this project.  It will certainly let Amiga users get a lot more from their computer at a great price."

Gunnar van Boehn of Apollo Team commented: "Lets work together to bring 68K and AMIGA back!"

Igor Majstorovic of Apollo Team also said: "From my perspective I m very excited to work with AmigaKit.  AFAIK we can do all bunch of stuff in the future together."

The AmigaKit one.  Tried to put the diamond in symbol in there but A.org spews out garbage when you put some symbols in.

Sonofabitch....I just paid Majsta $10 more for this, from the waitlist.  And, since his country is on the Department of Homeland Security redlist, it'll take almost a month for it to clear customs here in the US.  I would have ordered from Amigakit if I would have known this was coming...and had it in 10 days.

Same here, mine has been "allocated" for weeks, I don't have it yet, and I paid more too.

Ditto, paid months ago and still waiting for my shipment. Kind of annoying that they would prioritize this over customers who have already paid!

Well, one thing's for sure for me, then.  I won't be pre-ordering a Vampire 1200, since this is now the business model (retailers).  I'll just wait until it hits Amigakit or another retailer.

A friend of mine told me many years ago that he "never pre-orders hardware" I can see how that makes sense.

@Jeff if there were no pre-orders none of this would ever happen.

very true and definitely worth the long wait IMHO though I do think that people that ordered directly from Apool Team should get their cards before those from re-sellers...fair is fair

Wasn't sure why mine took so long, but figured something like this.
Surprised by Amigakit selling these although it does make sense.

Then perhaps the "allocated" units could have been sent out first to the people that paid more and paid in advance. It seems like it could have been handled much better.

Yes, our personal list have priority and cards send to amigakit were from batch who is send to people from our list long time ago. Next batch is in the production so everything will be fine and all set. Having AmigaKit on our side can be only good thing.

I know it shouldn't bug me but it does...can we stop referring to these new Vampire add-on FPGA cards as 'Accelerators'.

An Amiga Accelerator in the traditional sense means a faster CPU and some RAM whereas the latest Vampire board is basically an FPGA computer so referring to it as a simple 'Accelerator' is massively understating its capabilities and the development that has gone into the Vampire boards and the Apollo core.

I can see by other forum posts that a lot of Amiga users can't seem to recognize the conceptual difference between an old Blizzard 1230 and a Vampire Mrk2... which is akin to comparing Apples with very moldy oranges.  I think a large part of this confusion is caused by calling them Accelerators.

Maybe the term "accelerator" needs to evolve, unless a single-word or catchy phrase replacement can be introduced.

ISTR "accelerator" is a short name for "CPU accelerator."  Maybe "system accelerator" more accurately describes the basic functionality of the Vampire, though that could still be confusing in the popular usage.

At the moment, with the current official core, it is just an accelerator with RTG (similar to a BPPC+BVision combo, for example).
Its certainly not a whole computer, as its completely useless without an Amiga to provide all the rest.

When AGA and 16-bit sound are added in the next core release, it will be an accelerator with RTG, flicker-fixer and sound-card all in one.

The fact all the above sit on the same board, being an all-in-one product, doesnt make it anything different.

By your logic, a Picasso IV with all its addons (audio, flicker-fixer, tuner, etc) is not a 'graphics card'.

i would discuss that. amiga accelerators frequently provided additional features, such a mass storage interface or even pci/rtg interface. which all can be considered further aspects of system acceleration wholesale.

in this respect, and in a lack of tetter word, i dont see anything inappropriate or understating vampire capatibilities in calling it "accelerator". we could call it expansion, but it would also become inappropriate with a standalone system. i think, important is that no harm is meant. thats what matters.

I am really surprised that Amigakit doesn't care to share their side of this issue. I have a Sam 440 Flex already and I was eyeing the Amiga X5000 pretty seriously until this unfolded. I would want to hear both sides before I plunk down that much scratch on a another new system.

@klx300r

Whilst I understand the intrigue of the subject as a discussion topic, we have a corporate policy of keeping discussions with partners, suppliers and contractors private.  I am sure you agree that this is the professional and courteous way to conduct business.

If there is some important and/or pertinent information that needs to be shared with our customer base, we will of course issue an official statement.

Our primary focus is serving and supporting our paying end-users.

As one of the few full time Amiga businesses, we have worked tirelessly in the Amiga market for the last 13 years to bring new Amiga (Classic and NG) products to the market,  provide services, sponsor and attend Amiga shows around the world.  These activities are how we provide service, interact and communicate with our valued customer base on a daily basis.
