Looks fairly interesting, but not quite as advanced as others like AtheOS.  It says that "SkyOS is mainly (99.9%) a one man project." - I'm guessing it's GPL, but I cannot find it anywhere.  The only thing is that it's all in 80386 assembler - porting would never be a possibilty.

From the screenshots, it looks like it is registry-based (the RegEdit icon). IMHO registry-based systems suck :-)

I would guess it is NOT GPL - only one person and no mention of any GPL.

It is not all Assembler:

kernal: 437 files of which 27 is assembler.

I assume that the rest is gcc as that is the developer suite supplied.

I have downloaded and will play with it and get back with my thoughts!

From a quick glance at it, it is far more advanced then AROS at this point.

Well, it appears to have a working TCP/IP stack which puts it at a slightly later stage of development than AROS... but having tried it, I don't think it's more advanced :-D

Carls:  IMHO registry-based systems suck

Here's one for you:  Microsoft is a very profitable and experienced investor.  So, what's one of the first rules they break when designing the system registry?  Put all your eggs in one basket!  A registry OS wouldn't be so bad if each app was given its own registry (if the app asks for one).  But then, organization is not Microsoft's strong suit.

SkyOS...

I don't really know why people bother writing "alternative" OS's, anymore.  SkyOS looks way too much like Windows for my tastes.  Besides, when you wind up with files like "sb.dld" and "3c509.dld" in the system folder, what's the point?  How are you supposed to tell what is what?  I just went through a driver nightmare with Win98, trying to get a USB card reader to work.  Is SkyOS going to do any better?

One reason why I like the idea of AmigaDE is because it is, supposedly, an environment, not an OS.  There's already a lot of good OS's out there, but very few, good environments.  I think MacOS X is the only "real" alternative to Windows when it comes to a new environment, which is probably why Macs are still the only major corporate competition for Windows.  Sure, Linux is gaining ground, but only in the business sector (sesides, Linux doesn't really have an environment.  It just uses X Windows and the same desktop managers used on Unix).

Where are the truly *different* designs?  Why is everyone only interested in cloning Windows or obsolete Unix systems?

It looks too much like Windows...but it's an
interesting concept.

Although I think outdated unix clones rock, I
pretty much agree, we need some fresh ideas for
desktop OS's. OS X is decent, but it's still
rough around the edges in regard to its
multitasking capabilities. I think we'll
start to see what OS X is really capable of
when Apple goes to the 970.

I pretty much agree with -D- on this one...  it looks like Win 95 minus anything useful...

I'm waiting for the 970... if it's any good and I can get two of them in one box I'll take a mac over a dual Xeon... ;P ...

Well it's great that one person can produce a full fledged OS like this. Linus?? Is that you?
Cudo's to mr Szeleney for his talent.
Let's face it, it's probabbly better then Windows ME.

Which, incredibly is the brain child of hundreds of people stealing dozens of other peoples good ideas and using millions (perhaps billions) of dollars to IMPROVE upon an existing operating system while utalizing the huge knowledgebase that would come from decades of software developement and support.

Hmm.. and Microsoft was developing their operating system professionaly. Robert seems to be doing this as a hobby.

Argh.. it's so frustrating. Can't Bill Gates fund missions to the moon or mars something. C'mon stop wasting you time doing something your not good at!!!

=)

I'll have to download it and give it a spin.

"A registry OS wouldn't be so bad if each app was given its own registry (if the app asks for one)."

But then what is the point with a registry? :-)
Something like the AmigaOS prefs system feels much more flexible.
