Title: StarTrek Discovery season 2 finale
Post by: tonyvdb on April 25, 2019, 03:23:17 PM
Hi everyone, has anyone been watching the new StarTrek series Discovery? I know that season 1 was a bit rough and it seemed they were trying to please to many different groups of fans. Season 2 stepped it up ten fold and the season finale was EPIC to say the least. I would have to say one of the very best StarTrek finales ever!

Thoughts?

Yeah, and they fixed a lot of the issues with the timeline that they wouldn't have needed to if they hadn't inserted the series before the original series and had just set it into a different time period in the first place.

(Hopefully didn't spoil anything.  But yeah it was great!)

Couldn't agree more, I also loved the fact that the writers didn't let a 45min episode time frame let them skimp on the story, if they needed more time they just added more time to the show. Many episodes were over an hour long and the finale was an hour and a half.

Great show!

I liked season 1 because with all the "time"-line issues/possibilities, anything was possible so I just chose to accept it on it's own merits.

As a long time trek fan Discovery has yet to impressed me.

Axanar was a far superior product that they should have backed.  At least the stupid lawsuit is over and now they can begin production and shooting this summer...  Prelude to axanar was star trek that really caught my interest and was written by real fans and not generic writers...

Glad you enjoyed discovery though!

I've really enjoyed both seasons of Discovery.  The start of the first season was a bit shaky, but it improved as it went along.  Even my non-sci-fi wife has really enjoyed watching season 2 with me.  Season 3 looks to be interesting as it is set 950 years in the future from season 2.  And one has to consider the impacts of the Calypso short Trek episode.

The only thing that I dont care for is the relationship between the Dr and engineer. I dont get why every TV show these days has to have a controversial same sex relationship.

I bought Season 1 and am waiting on Season 2 Blu-ray.
edit:
I am glad it is getting better.

That was the whole point though, they intended that from the begining, they said so indirectly by asking people to watch to the end before losing their shit about it :-)

What was contraversial about it?

I sort of hoped that this series would explain why Klingons look like they do, and with Ash Tyler aka Voq's controversial relationship with himself and other klingons, it was promising... to quote Worf "it's a long story".

I was just thinking about that myself.  The klingons seemd to jump from "bald" to an aproximation of next generation style and just ignored the descrepency with the original series style, when they got most other details to sync up. Perhaps they just ran out of space for that in the script? Or perhaps that being left for the section 31 spinoff if it happens...

You thinking it's 'controversial' is proof that we still don't have enough TV shows featuring gay couples.

Why is it there? Because gay people are part of your potential target audience. Throw them a bone, and they might become interested in your product. In 2019, this approach works - because the amount of (gay or gay friendly) people you might win as followers massively outnumbers the amount of homophobes you might loose.

And the vast majority of us doesn't care at all, it's just another couple. I'm pissed they killed and resurrected the doctor., that plotline is always a stupid idea IMHO. His sex life doesn't bother me at all.

As for the show: it's flashy, the sets look really nice (the Enterprise bridge was awesome, especially compared to the Apple store version from the J.J.Abrams films) and they have some really decent actors. But it's just a generic action packed SciFi adventure, not Star Trek.

Star Trek doesn't usually do the "evil villain" plotlines in the TV shows, that's only used in the movies - because it's what you do in a movie. That battle in the season finale was ripped right out of Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, Federation starships don't deploy an army of small fighter planes. That stupid race through the asteroid field in the season opener was all eyecandy without substance as well. Some of the plotlines are beyond stupid: Burnham and Georgiou letting themselves be captured in the S1 finale so they can overpower 50 or so armed enemies after being led to the bridge (Georgiou to Burnham: "Good plan!")? Ouch. And you should never look at the plot too closely, that's going to give you a headache. Thank god it's so flashy, so you're too busy to notice.

I'll still watch it, but I'm not convinced yet.

All great views guys, in the end I usually watch because the story is different than most space shows and I dont usually look too deep into the plot as of course there are going to be lots of holes but I give them credit where its due, the show is fun and the battles are getting good.

Much like Amiga-land …
The creators will never please the entire fan-base...

I subscribed to Netflix just for watching it, it helped that my wife and kids had other interesting things to watch there too.

I really enjoyed it despite the bad critique it had from the press.

What I am really looking forward, and if you enjoy sci-fy you may like it too, is "The Expanse" which is now on Amazon Prime.
It is the best sci-fy series I have seen so far.

Yes, The Orville is good too, but it is a different animal from the usual sci-fy series.

Yes, I enjoy The Orville as well.  The Expanse is good and definitely worth checking out.  Another one to check out is KillJoys.

On YouTube there is channel called Dust that has many very good sci-fi short films (10 - 30 mins).

Yes, I get you. It certainly does not have the most attracting story.
