Shove THIS down your pants!
Shove THIS down your pants!

Description: This is a SanDisk 128MB xD-PictureCard still in it's packaging. The thing itself is about 1 square inch in size, but look how big that packaging is! There is a little zipper bag thing in there that's about three inches in diameter, but still, that's a MIGHT BIG PACKAGE! The best I can tell why it's so big is because these little RAM card deals are expensive and it's hard for a shoplifter to shove that huge of a package down their pants.

Well, I guess I don't have to be warm by it then. Maybe it'll get the message and be not round anymore. In the mean time, it's round.

If you don't like the big package, don't buy it.  Maybe they'll get your point.  In the meantime, it appears that people don't mind.
I did buy an identical card in a gas station/computer store near Ningbo, China, and it came unpackaged.  Also, it was like $3USD.

I like a big package as much as the next guy (sell some of them  :-P  ) But this seems excessive for such a small item. If they're worried about shoplifting, then they should keep the actual items in smaller packages behind the counter, with a larger, empty display package on the shop floor so customers can see it.

I see hundreds of boxed PCs come in to my company, get unpacked and installed for customers, and then the packaging is thrown away. If you include the monitor, desktop/laptop, keyboard, mouse, PCMCIA ISDN card, cables, spare charger etc etc etc... it's a heck of a lot of cardboard, polystyrene and plastic. Unfortunately, our customers will not pay to have any of it recycled, which means it all ends up in a big hole in the ground  :madashell:  This is obviously cheaper, but what is it doing to the planet?

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. It makes me furious when financial gain is put ahead of the needs of the planet.

Package seems absurdly large, though that probably on purpose. If it had a small package customers would have a hard time seeing it, thus limiting the impulse buy potential, or customers would buy the competitor product, which had a bigger and more attractive box.

use an exacto knife cut the plastic out where the chip is and cram it in you pocket, walk away whistling and your finished.

It's rather worrying that the card has become dislodged in transit...

It's sandwiched inside a little plastic thing and you have to shake it a bit to make it move. They're solid state little thin things. I think it would take quite a bit of elephants dancing on it to break it.
