Amiga Gathering in Second Life
« on: July 02, 2010, 05:20:32 AM »
Hello!

I don't know if many have heard but there is going to be an Amiga Demo Party in Second Life this August.
http://virtuamigaparty.xooit.fr/index.php

I was thinking that in order to get more people to attend we should do a weekly meet up in Second Life.  This way people that have never used Second Life can log on and get use to using it.

Second Life accounts are free.  I know sometimes there is resistance to new technology and there is especially a lot of misconception around Second Life, but it is pretty cool technology and to me it is just the next step from IRC.

I was thinking we can meet up at the IBM site.  We just need to nail down a date and time that works best.  You can talk in Second Life like IRC or with a microphone if you choose.  If you don't use a mic you can still listen and just type yourself.

Here is a link to the IBM site.

If you need any help getting on please post in this thread.

That's a great idea - the next best thing after a real Amiga party :-) Btw, what are the HW requirements for SL? I'm currently in the process of upgrading my graphics card. I suppose I could use my mom's computer, she has ATI X200 IGP, that should suffice for the lowest settings...

800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better
512MB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or better
OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250 or better
OR Intel 945 chipset

I just use a system with the built in Intel chipset and it runs pretty good.

Well it's looking good so far.

We should have a Diablo 3 clan when it comes out. :D

Amiga, Diablo III, and Duke Nukem Forever fans.  We are a pretty patient lot.

I switched my laptop into NVidia mode to run the Second Life, and there's not a single person in IBM land!

..and now the laptop is starting to smell like burning hair.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody in the IBM China area either.  It is free to use and since it is deserted that is why I thought it would be a good place to meet.

@all

SecondLife is a just a software tool like IRC or a Web browser.  And again this about getting ready and getting use to the software so we have more people prepared for the Demo Party in August.

As far as the comments on SecondLife itself all I can say is that I guess it is like the rest of the Internet.  IRC, WWW, Usenet and things.   If you go to IRC and go into an Amiga channel chances are things will be what you expect.  If you just join random IRC channels you are probably going to find things you never ever wanted to find, know, read, or hear.  Same with the Web.  You go to Amiga.org, Slashdot, Google, and you get what you expect.  Think of all the strange bizarre things that are on the Web.  Yet we are all still here and unaffected by most of the crazy stuff out there. If you start going to strange Web sites and random places chances are you will find things that will fry your retinas.

My experience in SecondLife is much more limited then some I'm sure.  The University I attended had it's own virtual campus in Second Life and I had a class that was totally in SL.  About 40 people and obviously very professional.  I've used it as tool to do meetings with people.   I've never really just explored people's random sites(islands) or even talked to strangers in SecondLife.

It all depends on how you use the tool, just like the web.  SecondLife offers IRC type communication and free Voice over internet communication in groups.  The big bennefits for the Demo Party are the ability to display art in a gallery type form, stream Demo music compilations, and the big one stream Video to a group of us in real time.

I think this will be fun and looks like we have quite a few people interested.  Hopefully all will join in for a little fun!

Anyways, I like the idea of an SL-Amiga party and will certainly try to attend, if I happen to have the time. So, where and when?

Well I'm thinking maybe we could make it Sundays at 7pm London time.  (Avoiding GMT as daylight saving times always messed me up)

I'm probably not available tomorrow, but would be able to be there next Sunday.  Not that I need to be there.  (You can of course log on and look around and maybe run into other Amiga users when ever.  Just like irc.)

I'm thinking this time choice will avoid any conflicts with the weekly IRC chat that happens about 8 hours later on Sunday.

If anyone has better suggestions for time let me know.
As far as location I suggest this site,
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IBM%20China%20BIC/120/188/30

So once you install the free client you can use that link to take you to the area where we meet.

As far as when and where the Demo Party is in August, I'm not sure.  I don't think it has been announced, but http://virtuamigaparty.xooit.fr/index.php is the place to check.   If you have any mod making skills or drawing skills and things I think they are glad to except contributions for the Demo Party.

That's where I was hanging out.

I rode the hot air balloon and the dolphins for a while.  The pandas were less fun, I think they might've been stuffed.

Yep that's it.  I saw Tone in there but he was 'away'.

I was around in and out al day, didn't see anybody ):

I wasn't able to be there either.  It's seems like this will be an OK time and date though.  I'll post this to the other forums and do some reminders as we get closer to next Sunday.

Hopefully we can get it to be succesful.

I would honored.  Thank you very much.  I've had an Amiga for over 20 years and have never been able to make it to a demo party.  When I saw this event I thought I would be a great opportunity and I think the more people the more fun!

OK, Sunday(today/tomorrow depending where you are) 7pm London Time I will be logged in.  http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/  This site can help to know when it is 7pm in London.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IBM%20China%20BIC/120/188/30
Will get you to the right place in the SecondLife viewer/browser.

It will probably just be some chatting and helping new people to learn how to use the software to do things like walk around and look at things. I hope to see lots of people there. Please don't be afraid to log in. It's just software. :)

Thanks guys. I had a great time.

It's pretty interesting how a lot of our Amiga history is so similar.  :)

No problem.  I know you have put a lot of work into it.  Hopefully someday it will all come together.  I've seen lots of pictures and it's pretty amazing everything you have done.  Maybe in a few years we can all get together.  I think it will be fun.

Is Second Life any more ridiculous then facebook or twitter?

Personally I'd rather use my computer for more practical uses, but who am I to judge.

More practical than being able to communicate with people from across the planet in real time?

I don't get why people bash Second Life.  It's a computer app.  Sure people use it for lame stuff, but companies like IBM, Cisco, AMD, Sun etc have dozens of public and private sites on Second Life.  People making fun of Second Life is as ignorant as people saying the "Internet" is just for games and porn and can't be used for anything practical.

I'm not really a SL user.  I used it a for a class at University and then a few times getting ready for this Amiga gathering.  But I can't believe people bash technology with so much potential when they clearly have never tried it.
