If by listing directories you mean opening windows on Workbench - then yes. If you have hundreds of files and icons, like with a WHDLOAD installation, your CHIPRAM will vanish incredibly fast. What you want is a utility to move that data (and others) to FAST RAM. In the past, FBLIT did a good job. With Amiga OS 3.1.4 you will have better luck loading Picasso96 (Available to purchase for a few bucks from Individual Computers) and a driver you can find on Aminet called native.lha. This combinations adds a few RTG tricks to your OCS/ECS/AGA Amiga, including keeping icon and Workbench picture data in FAST RAM. It is incredibly useful, and afterwards Workbench gently sips CHIP RAM instead of guzzling it.
