So in light of my other thread, I thought this would be a worth while effort. What I'd like to do here is start a list of laptops which those within the community here have used, that are Windows 7 compatible, run like a kitten on crack, and have survived more than a year or two of HEAVY use beyond mere light web browsing or a couple of hours of use a week.
My first suggestion is the Dell Precision M4400. The video drivers were kind of tricky to work out, but once I had that down and installed a Solid State drive, this puppy seems to think it's a new computer all the time! I've had it for about 2 years now, and I even bought it used, dropped it a couple times, etc.
What have you got?
I think this list will help weed out the good laptops from the bad for those looking to buy a cheap used Laptop, so they are not forced to switch to Windows 8.

Asus G51J, 4 years, SSD-enhanced. Pretty fast still.

Would my 2012 i7 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro running Win 7 under Bootcamp (along with OSX 10.9) count? Not exactly cheap, but I got good deal used :-).

I have had this 18.4" notebook for about 4 years new and its got a proven track record. It pretty inexpensive when I bought it compared to other brands. Its bulky to travel with but really is worth the effort if really plan to use a computer while you travel.
I don't run windows 7, but it did come with windows 7 so I would assume it runs just fine.
I have upgraded the ram to 8GB and the HDs to a 250mb SSD and 1TB hybrid drive. With that and windows 8.1 it really still seems relevant. It also helps that a lot more software is tuned for multiple threads which was not the case when I bought the notrbook. After I loaded windows 8.1 and updated the BIOS the computer started running a lot faster, tropically never drops below 2GHZ under full load which is pretty neat because its only a 1.7ghz GPU.
It has Harmon Kardon speakers which sound great still, but I'm currently upset with Harmon Kardon for other unrelated reasons.
The only downside to this notebook other than the weight and size (including the 180watt power supply brick) is that its typical for the fans to start making all sorts of rattling noises which does not effect the operation of the notebook and usually go away as the computer warms up.

The web is becoming 'appified' so I was going to get Windows 8 as long as it has the latest drivers and runs stable.
If I need a lean install I will go with Linux

I have an Acer Aspire S7 that is my primary system which I run Debian on. Works perfect and is very light and super fast.
EDIT: It came with Windows 7 I think..dunno. Never booted it into Windows when I bought it.

I was talking to the guy I get my laptops from today. He takes care of about 400 laptops, mostly HP 6550b and 6750b. In the 3 years he's been there they have had "a couple dozen" hard drive failures, but 0 motherboard failures. Didn't have good things to say about the Toshibas they had earlier though :-(.

I've got an old 17" Dell Studio laptop and it's still running great. Put a SSD in it last year and it boots into win7 in no time flat.
Just bought a nice 14" Dell Insperon (the one in the molded aluminom case) and put a 1TB SSD in it running win8 it's been a great laptop.

Anything IBM Thinkpad or Lenovo Thinkpad.
Currently using a T400 with Win8.1 (which actually runs better than Win7)
Prior to that it was an R51.
I've tried all the other brands (including macs) and Lenovo have always been faultless performers for me.

I have a Dell Precision M4700 for work that is used for over 8 hours a day working on large coding and 3D modelling projects (My main work machine), It's been faultless for the last 2 years I think it is. I also use an Alienware X11-R2 that is sometimes used for games but is operational for at least 15 hours a day, Both on Win7 both work fine.

Sorry, the Dell Studio is an 1737 And the new Insperon is a 7000series with i7 processor

I think this is sort of a dumb thread, but decided to play anyway.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7720 w/Intel i7-3630Q @ 2.40GHz & 8gb RAM, that I bought refurbished one year ago that has seen many hours of use every day with zero problems so far.
Runs AmigaForever quite well, but have not tried to run AROS on it yet.

I use a Toshiba A200-1TW laptop with Windows 7, but installing the right drivers was takes a lot of effort. I maybe try to upgrade with Windows 8.1. This laptop also has a HD-DVD drive in it.
My other laptop is a Clevo W110ER from BTO and installing Windows 7 and Windows 8 works without difficulties. This is my portable gaming rig.

I'm kind of freak - 3 laptops on my desk but the lowest on the stack just gathering dust; perhaps should give it to my wife. And the 4th is packed to get binned as the screen doesn't work.

I bought mine in 2010 and used it as a school computer. used it on my workbench.
It is probably somewhat filled with metal filings from my time at the gunsmithing school. Still runs like a charm. A bit weak battery capacity.
It is not in daily use, as i prefer stationary computers. But there has never been a single tick about it.
Have been considering using linux, but it still runs on the same W7 install. and it runs well.
It does not have fantastic graphics capabilities. with the intel built-in graphics. but it plays older games at an ok framerate. world of tanks goes at 3-5 FPS...

And the speakers are HORRIBLE.... I use the music angel for sound.
I am very happy and pleased with the computer. and will be sad the day it dies.

I'm all for IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T or W series machines (or X if you want smaller sizes). The company I work for has used nothing but Thinkpads since pre 2000.
