Description: The good old parallel port battery backed-up clock for the Amiga.  Note that the port on the other side of the unit is in fact not a pass-through, but only for effect.

Yeah, that's a terrible design. I always thought the battery backed clock that hooked to the A1000's keyboard port was cool though.

To this day I haven't made Solaris print anything useful

That's because you don't have any green and white paper in your 2 foot wide dot matrix!  :-D

Does anyone actually HAVE a printer hooked up to their miggy? Tho I could see it getting in the way of a paranet cable...

I used to have three.  But then I had this crazy idea that I'd use these printers from other computers, so I put them on the LAN.  Aside from once a year printing something from a peecee and then dealing with those nasty Windoze printing problems, my Amiga is the only computer printing to them.  To this day I haven't made Solaris print anything useful :madashell:

Upon further, somewhat accidental, investigation, it appears that (according to the instructions) this unit actually connects to the external disk drive port.  Makes a bit more sense, as you can just whack it on to the end of the chain.

The confusing thing is, the connector on one side fits into the disk drive port, yet the connector on the other side fits into the parallel port.  Without plugging it in and trying it out I have no way of knowing which is correct.  Maybe they made two models?

I used to have a Panasonic color printer attached.  Once it croaked I came across the wonder that is lpr.device and now use my LaserJet 4050TN and DeskJet 882C.  Just a quick setenv command and I can switch printers -- then a quick visit to the Printers prefs.

Makes me think that it would have been nice for OS3.5 or 3.9 to support multiple printers.

Mine (for A500) died years ago. And it wasn't the battery or bad contacts/cracked solders. Some of the chips must have said goodbye.

Why on Earth would anyone sacrifice their parallel port just for a clock module? People who really need the time to be kept up-to-date, like business users, probably also want to use a printer!  :-D

I'm not sure... the two ports are slightly different sizes.  If it was a standard case with a pass-through that nobody could be bothered to wire up, then I would expect the ports to be the same size.

"Only for effect", eh? No, I'm pretty sure that the port on the other side was left because the plastic cases like this were common and cheap.
