A trusty old C64 working as a web server
« on: March 07, 2002, 10:32:22 PM »
You don't believe that?  The HTTP server was written by Adam Dunkels as part of his uIP TCP/IP stack. It is written in C (using the cc65 C compiler) with just the IP checksum routines coded in assembly for speed. The web server uses version 0.6 of the uIP TCP/IP stack with a small patch for cgi.c.

Check the website to see it.

Check it out - I found the ass-end!

How about that! Really amazing. What's next? Online gaming with my Atari 2600? :-D

That is really amazing.  I've wondered about if it would be possible to make a 64 run as a web server.  Maybe I'll have to get the code (if its available) and start up my old C64 BBS. ;-)

Actually this is old news, (I think it appeard on slashdot once and the poor C64 was overloaded), but nontheless it's cool.

There is even a rudimentry web browser and IRC client available for the C64 (though I doubt both run at the same time without mem expansion ;) and people have upgraded the C64 with 20MHz 6502 compat. CPUs and run all kinds of crazy stuff...

If the "Commodore 1" is not vaporware (sounds far, far too good to be real to me, but I AM a skeptical kind of guy ;), I might even look into buying one... hacking stuff on the trusty C64 again brings back some memories..

If I am correct the C64 is also still active in the demo scene. People are still creating demos for it. And amazing ones to. Good things never die.

I must say that this is the coolest thing I've seen since that crazy guy who made a web browser on the C64! I think I have to go home and play "Rally Speedway" on my old C64 right away - it has been way too long since I used that old fellow...

I was at the Mekka/Symposium demo party last year, and one of the C64 demos featured a colour, texturemapped wolfenstein engine! This is on a basic C64 with disk drive! (NO SuperCPU!)

It wasn't super-fast but you could follow the motion of the camera fairly easily.

The only other wolf engine I saw on an unexpanded 8-bit was in a Spectrum demo, but that was only black & white (one of the textures said "Amiga Rules!" though :)

Recommended C64 demos (and please watch them on the real thing! Remember: Emulators Suck :):

Triage 4/Smash Designs
Triage 5/Smash Designs
Deus Ex Machine/Crest (I think it was crest)

Oh heck... just go to http://ms.demo.org, select 2000 or 2001 and download the C64 releases :)

It's not vaporware.

Hi redrumloa,

I did not know that. I was just joking when I asked if there was a Linux version for C64. I am surprised. My nephew has a C64. Maybe I will get it from him. :-)
