BeOS 5.0 Pro.

I just built a system using BeOS. It runs at 890 Mhz.
It is a Pentium III and trying to get Aros or Xamiga on it is a pain.
I did find an Aros disk from Jan. that will run but the video drive stinks.
I need a pci compatable video card.

I wonder if Haiku could add to my existing system without reinstallation?

I can't take a picture to show it.
I am trying to build a machine I can transfer my programs to test.
I guess I will have to keep Virtual Box.

I have another Pentium III to try.

Back in a day I had a machine that had Voodoo 3 3000 AGP,SB16 Sound(?), and a 350 Mhz Processor. It ran Quake II real good. I had to rename the files in the install script so that it would install right. One would need to manually install them if they did not.
One needs to have a copy of Quake II Win/dos(?) and then download the Binary from Bebits.
I had some problems during install the first time today. I had to re-install the base files after I re-initialize the partition.

The script was the only problem. I believe I can not remember where the binary went.
I think one could put it into a directory with the script and let it put all the files into the correct directory on the hard drive. Uh, rats, I can not remeber.

The Voodoo driver was easy to do. All one had to do was drop it into the correct directory.

I did download and boot the Haiku ISO on Virtual Box. It looks good.
If I had not known it was Haiku it would have been easy for it to pass as BeOS.
I locked up on me when I tried to install it.
It will be another toy for now.

I've been using the Haiku nightlies for a while now, both in vmware and on an i7 PC and they both have very good uptime.

The "stable" release isn't.  Right now the nightlies are for what will be the next stable release.

I've had maybe two crashes in the past month and I'm working them very hard for daily and development use.

I am not for sure what BeOS 5 will work on today. I cold not get it to work on Virtual Box. I guess I did not try hard enough.

I forget about the nightlies, I will have to check them out.

I'm not sure what you want to accomplish, but unless it's a retro thing, Haiku is IMHO on par with BeOS and runs on new hardware.

I don't have GPU accelerated 3D working, but it's of little use to me ATM.

A few default preferences that drove me nuts that you may want to change:

• Keymap shortcut setting for Ctrl instead of Alt key on shortcuts. (ctrl-C, etc) Haiku defaults to Alt, but I like Windows/Linux mode.
• The mouse setting so that the first click both focuses and sends button events. (Otherwise you click on a background window close button and it only focuses the window)
• Tracker preferences for Show folder location, Single window navigation and show navigator.

After those it's pretty nice.

It's still a love it or hate it look though and the other themes aren't complete.

I did not know Haiku was that far along. I will have to get a Nightly ISO some day.
I don't have much more though work with other than my AMD AM3 machine and V.Box.

I did find out these PIII 800's will work fine. I would like to get 3D up and going to play some Quake.
It is is not like I can not run it anywhere else.

I haven't tried it, but I would make sure that you haven't enabled Enlightened I/O.  Haiku won't have a clue how to deal with that, better to fully emulate all devices.

I will have to study up on that.
Also, are you good at Grub?

I think the version of Grub that is bundled with Xamiga needs to be replaced.

When I instll Xamgia on one of the P III's it can not find the drives correctly.
Some where between sda and hda there looks like their is some confusion.
Maybe it is just unsupported hardware.
Gparted sees the drives hda on one machine and another machine it is sda.
I had to change sda2 to hda2 to get it to load.
810 chip set, I am not for sure what to say about it.
Edit:
I had to install MacPup 5.1.1 and make the partitions.
I had to use its Grub to get things going.
I am puting Xamiga on the second partition.
It can not mount root.

It is odd that such a fine O.S. failed. I guess three is the number of O.S. survivability in the mainstream, Win,Mac,Linux.
I wonder what was on the minds of Commodore when Open Source came on the scene.
I do not think that would have been the reason to rehash some of there technology the way they did.
I will have to research the 80's and 90's to get a better idea.

Man... If I had internet at home, I could upload a BeOS software pack that would make you guys drool.

Do you have any pictures? Maybe some one could use a cell phone to send them.

I noticed that as BeOS progressed software had a R3,R4,R5 compatability label.

Unfortunately I have to use the " Do not call Bios" option when I boot.

Pictures of what? My software collection? For that I'd have to build a system and organize all I've got, which includes some long lost commercial sifts as well as unreleased software and code from some of the major coders from back in the day. I know I had upped some of it to Haikuware with their permission a couple years back.

Oh and it's primarily 5.0 softs, along with some old Yellowtab stuff, not to mention various distros.

Apple was doing rough in the 90's, at some points, and it would have been nice if Be had taken advantage of the situation. Apple had too many different models. Going Unix seemed to be saviour.

Ya, the quality of their "Alphas" have been more than impressive! They got their priorities in order. Rather than focus on eye candy and advancements that would only be useful on a stable OS, they first make sure that the OS is stable and works as it does for the most important things. Everything else can be fleshed out later.
