« on: September 11, 2013, 05:07:34 AM »
well I've got all necessary parts to do the upgrade but this 040 board doesn't look like the others?? it's got the mach131 but where do i put the 060 Rom I have as it's a full sized chip? no markings at all on the board so wondering if it's actually not an Apollo board??

Is the rom on the other side maybe?

Im interested in this too 'cos I have an apollo1240 I want to get upgraded as well, and going by what Ive reaped from a few threads here and there a long/rectangle chip on the reverse side (on mine marked "60/56x") kinda matches (the x is actually another number that has been overwritten with a black permanent marker, so Im not sure what no. is really there).

I could be completely off the mark though. Im only just now starting to look into it myself.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Ah ok thanks to Drewlio over at aw.net's fast response I found out I've got a newer model Viper 1240 made by ACT in Germany back in 2003. Bit of research tells me these cards do not have inherent problems with the mach131 chips and memory access problems the Apollo boards had and can be expanded to 64mb per sim unlike the Apollo boards which maxed out at 32Mb per SIMM.

But the question is can I upgrade it to an 060 as There was also a Viper060 produced the same time that looks like the same card ?? Hmmm

Hiya,

I think you've got lucky, I'm pretty sure those cards are better than a normal Apollo :)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

Answer is YES:

And I think you don't need 060 EPROM as 060 code is in the EPROM already.
At least it was in my case.

Stan

Why better ??

1) 64MB RAM support out of the box in desktop version
2) No MACH sockets - no risk of bad contact/bending sockets
3) Coin type battery instead of accumulator - no risk of acid spill
