To Morph, or not to Morph?
« on: April 27, 2005, 04:57:17 AM »
I got a question for those who use Pegasos/Morph.

I once built a machine for Linux. Used Linux a bit, but ended up in Windows all the time.

I built a machine for BeOS. Used BeOS a lot, but I found I would need to go to Windows often.

These experiences have me leary of getting into Morph, because ever time I have bought an Apple (twice) I have felt good about it. These other machines left me with the feeling I should have saved a little longer and bought an Apple.

So Morph or not to Morph?
How much time do you think I will spend in Linux PPC?
Should I just buy a G5?

What do you think?
Where to get the news that matters...

Depends on what you need. If you like an up-to-date machine with a lot of software buy an Apple. If you like to experiment with a new amigaos-like OS buy a Pegasos. At least you can use Linux and MacOS on Pegasos too if its needed.

MorphOS is pretty cool, very fast and stable (for an amiga type OS). If you consider it a hobby, "novelty" type thing it can be quite a bit of fun to play with, and you can make it look beautiful using MUI. (For an example, you can see my old ambient screenshots here at Morphzone.:-P :-))

On the downside...MorphOS is not going to be nearly as stable as MacOS (though it's not intended to be at this point), and necessary applications (like modern web browsers) do not exist, not to mention things like new commercial games/etc. Linux works well on the Pegasos (minus some glitches with 3d acceleration, at least back when I installed Debian) but I would not even consider buying one if you're mainly going to be running linux...a PC would be much better suited for that task not to mention cheaper and more powerful.

Bottom line IMHO...is that if you're looking for a something to replace your everyday machine, get a Mac...or a PC and run WinUAE. On the other hand, the Pegasos makes a solid choice for a secondary fun/hobby setup...you would likely enjoy owning it, but it's expensive and not very practical.

Sometimes I miss mine, if I had the cash to burn and the time to play I would consider buying another.

Don't forget that PPC Linux hosted version of AROS is underway, with an OSX hosted version hot on its heals.

I say not to morph.

You could end up finding your self batting for the other team, if you know what i mean.

I can only immagine it would be difficult to type with floppy wrists... Go buy a mac.

Screw that batting for the other team crap! He wants a serious answer
here!

I use Macs and I have a Pegasos. I got the Pegasos to replace my A3000
which was as upgraded as you could go. Its done that and more. If your
an Amiga user and want a machine that will make you feel the same as
using an Amiga get MorphOS its thats simple. You still will lack a
modern browser and the serious apps the Amiga was, but you gain a lot
more at the same time. Our boards are a lot cheaper in the the long
run then the Amiga One boards too. Better RAM and no bugs in the
hardware let you install linux and a host of other systems becides
MorphOS. You can also install MacOS X through linux! Its a great all
in one system that you can use to replace any system you have now. I
know several users that only have a Pegasos and get by just fine.

I have to agree with what I've heard here.  Whether you choose MorphOS or AmigaOS (on the AmigaOne), the biggest thing you have to decide is the purpose for the purchase.

If you're buying either with the purpose of having a real-world machine for doing real-world stuff, buy a Mac.  That's not intended as an insult.  I'm just pointing out the fact that the lack of real commercial software for the Amiga/Pegasos is its Achilles heel (unless of course you're going to run Linux).

If you're buying either machine for the purpose of having a machine that can "get you by", you have a LOT of fun tinkering with computers and you get a real rush out of pushing a machine to the limits to force it to do something it wasn't designed for, then an Amiga or Pegasos might be up your alley.

Most of the people here that own either systems are the latter.  Hobbyists who enjoy finding new ways to make their machines outperform the base expectations.

Yes it is down and its a shame, they are having a lot of issues with a
server they are using. A Mac at that too! It should be back up soon.

You cant do everything with MorphOS. For web browsing you probably find IE, Konqueror or Safari more appealing than current browsers. For MS Word or Excel you wont find replacement. I dont know how good Papyrus Office is (I dont have it) but I doubt it is comparable to MS Office in features.

But if you love programming then you might find MorphOS very interesting ;-)

Linux community suffers from "newbies suck" attitude but Linux desktops are fairly good. KDE and Konqueror is an excellent pair.

You can install Linux on Mac too (and wipe poor OSX, heh).
