Amiga at War: AOS4 vs MOS
« on: July 24, 2003, 10:48:15 PM »
When I Was child I saw the Amiga vs Atari battle,
then the Amiga1.3 vs Amiga 3.0 (!!) and the Amiga vs MSDos.
The final battle (Amiga vs Windows) was our defeat (I joined the "Amiga army" with my a1200), but we still continued our battles (do you remember the Amiga vs p-Os battle?).
Altough I think that this keeps the platform alive, do you REALLY think that we need to fight agains a brother os like MOS? I would have never started the project because of the community split it has produced, but since it is here ...

regards,
Claudio

Hi IBase,
i can understand the Amiga V's Atari 'Battle' - as you put it

this is not the same thing
but do you really think that there needs to be an AmigaOS versus MorphOS battle? is that really productive?
is there any good reason to be on either side?

the difference this time, is that they are so damn simmilar(from a users AND developers perspective) that there is no technical reason why a program for one cant be ported to the other

they will both most likely have the same software for a large part, and users will probably(as i like to imagine it) switch from one to the other without alot of fus, swapping all the apps over and all that(ok, i know its not 100% compatable)

there is really no need for fighting

chose the one you want - and leave the other users alone IMO

 :-)

you are right, but still I cannot see the two words AmigaOS and MorphOS on the same thread without flames being spread. I would really love to have both running, but it is not going to happen, unfortunately.

thats a problem cause by only certain members...(BTW let me remind you that you did just that, now, somebody could be mistaken for thinking that you wanted to start a flame war!)

what would happen if it did? is there any particular reason for 'it' not happening??

Err yes, I understand and want to apologize with the MOS friends out there. The points is quite complex: I do some programming on multiple targets (Posix, AmigaOS 3, MacOS Classic and, as soon as the G5 is out, Mac OS X). Testing software is already a horrible task, now imagine having to deal with subtle differences, GUI aspect and behaviour, kernel timings and so on. Imagine keeping the source trees up and running on all these systems!
so when I say that I will not run both AOS and MOS is because since they share the same API, I expect them to run the same software and possibly tha same way.

I'll sleep on MorphOS.  What can MorphOS do that Windows can't? If I want a secondary choice of computing, then I shall use my Amiga 1200 68030/50mhz.  :-D

Run Amiga software?

Nothing wrong with retro I guess, but 600+ MHz Gx's sure sound tempting.

Oh.. you are young.. It was much more interesting at the time of Commodore 64 and Spectrum (at least in Europe). Atari had no *** chanse against Amiga. :-P

Well.. What keeps platforms alive is either sheer nostalgia (like old Amigas) or new development. And even though these fights don't itself much help on development they do sometimes point out the parts that need to be enhanced for making better product.

Otoh, it's not allways best for peronal relations between people on different factions.. But it's a bit difficul to say which way causality goes. At some people at least it sees that their old hatred and mistrust to others has driven then to do what they do.

In alla honestly, I really think so. Then there wont be these petty (sp?) comments like "OS4 isn't out yet" and yada, yada.
When OS4 is out we will have two things to actually compare and then we will all notice that if we take each others hands and join forces againt the whole dumb, stupid world outside ours we will accomplish everything.
Come on! Take hands and join me!

we shall overcome someda-a-ay.
Oh, oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe,
we shall overcome some day.
