Old C64 User new to the Amiga world
« on: October 07, 2005, 03:58:01 AM »
I held out against the onslaught of PCs until 1997. I used my C64 for everything back then. A Commodore 128 was a fantasy and the amiga was so out of reach it might as well have been fiction ;-)

I got gifted an Amiga 1000 in 1998 but just recently dug it out.

I am a firm believer that todays OS's need way to much horsepower for what they do and I try to run the smallest lightest OS's on my PCs that I can (well except my gaming PC it runs XP..blah).

Anyway I am very excited about firing up my Amiga 1000 and would love any tips on what I can do with it. I am also looking forward to finding a more expandible Amiga (1200 perhaps). So if anyone has an extra 1200 laying around in the US or Canada, I'm your man!!

Anyway,that's me.

DonĀ“t know so well what you can do with an A1000 these days. Try to find a Ram expansion and a turboboard and boot it with a kick3.1 floppy ...

I'll give that a try. I was actually trying to read up on "upgrades" for my 1000.

I am definately keeping my eyes open for something in the A1200 + range (I'm sure I can find old Amiga's around here in the heart of Ohio if I am vigilant and go to garage sales with my wife). Of course if a 3000 or 4000 fell into my lap I sure wouldn't complain.

I'll be glad to trade knowledge with people here if anyone needs it, since I am a unix/linux/firwall/cisco guru and such a newbie in the Amiga world.

ahh, an old C64 user.
I still have mine setup, but seldom use it.  I find I can download stuff for my ugh pc and use it quicker that booting up my c64.

However, the sounds are still not as good, nor are the colors.

But getting on line without windows is difficult.

I have several Amiga 500's, a 600, and a 1200, I think.  I like them much better than pc's but again, the online thing in the states keeps me on my pc.......sigh.

welcome.

Welcome roguebeck,

For Amiga help, tips, advice and entertaining comments, this is the place to be.  To be honest and realistic, your A1000 is best suited for old games, unless you like playing with old, ugly productivity applications too.  There are some add-ons for the A1000, but they are limited and getting very hard to find in working order.  You are much better off trying to get at least an A500/A2000 if not an A3000/A4000/A1200 if expansion and modern software is what you want to run on your Amiga.  I might have an A1200 for sale later this year and will post it here and on eBay, so keep your eyes open.

I am totally with you in your beliefs about today's OS's being so inefficient and appreciate the Amiga OS for doing so much with so little.  QNX, with their entire OS w/GUI and a browser + a couple of other tiny apps compressed onto a single 1.44mb floppy that self extracted and started itself on an x86 machine blew me away.  I was sorry their collaboration with Amiga Inc. fell apart.

Anyway, welcome aboard and stay for a while.  You'll be sure to get hooked.

 :-D
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Ah ha, I did hook up with an A500 finally! I sure will keep my  eyes open for that 1200 when it comes time for you to sell it.
I am sooo looking for a 3000/4000 so I can run an Amiga to do things instead of always using a PC (I have 10 PCs, a mix of win2000/XP and a slew of Debian Linux), and an iMac, running OSX, but man that A500 and A1000 are much more fun to use.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I look forward to giving you all my money so I can buy Amiga crack, I mean stuff ;-)
