PiStorm firmware upgrade.
« on: September 10, 2023, 12:36:01 AM »
Hi, I guess it’s fairly obvious that no one on here needs more help than I do.
So I can easily find where to update most of the software for my PiStorm32 lite.
But I can not find where to get a firmware update. Can someone help me with
that?
Thank you,
Brad Hansen

We all need help, the difference is where to go for it. You ask here, others use Google, Facebook, Discord etc.

The Emu68 code (assuming that's what you use, instead of Musashi), has had a few updates recently. They are here: https://github.com/michalsc/Emu68/releases

The 'nightly' builds get released semi-regularly. Just make sure you save the version for the PiStorm32 lite (a common mistake judging by some support forums).

You don't need to overwrite all the files on your SD card in the Pi with those in the .zip file, just the file called 'Emu68-pistorm32lite'. By default that's stored in the root of the card, but some pre-built distros like CaffeineOS have it in a folder.

There is a way to update this on the Amiga without taking the card out of the Pi, but the simplest way is to put the card in another computer and copy the file over.

It's also helpful to others on the forum, if a proposed solution works (or not), to comment on the thread. That way other people with the same question will know what to try if they come across the thread.

Have a look at the 12:35 mark of Doug’s Video here:

It’s really easy. Just backup your rom file and follow instructions.

Gentleman Thank you for this good information. I upgraded the file you pointed out.  But that is not
the file I am looking for. The file I am looking to update is the only file that does not come with the package.
The "firmware.bin" file. My issue with my PiStorm32.lite is that the HDMI function on my Pi has stopped working.
When I first set it up the HDMI output was working fine. Then I decide to just use VGA and so disconnected it.
Later when I went back to the HDMI I only get the EMU 68 grey screen. So I updated all the software, but I could
not find that "firmware.bin." Just hoping that this will fix my issue. Any information on where this file is and what
it exactly does.
Thank you,
Brad Hansen

I'm stumped! I've been running Emu68 since April and I don't have this file visible on my Pi.

Where is it in your file structure?

Hello Andy, Chris Edward’s video “Amiga 1200 Pistorm32,” at the 31 minute mark. He identifies
the file “PS32-lite.gz,” and says to rename it to “firmware.bin.gz.” Can’t find any other place where
he talks about it.

Do you mean this vid?  https://youtu.be/QaEZYFVqzcc?feature=shared

At around 16:22 in this vid there is a possible solution to the firmware.bin question.

You're watching a 7 month old video of Chris referring to the then-current wiki page. I've looked in the history of the page and the reference to firmware.bin was edited out on 16 Feb. Presumably the master instructions from the official Emu68 pages got updated after a software change. Follow the latest instructions here. http://wiki.amiga.org/index.php/Pistorm32-Lite

Lastly, you've said that you get the Emu68 logo on your HDMI source, so the hardware is working.

HI, the only problem with the wiki is it assumes everyone is using Windows and I am not. And I have been
struggling mightily to figure out how to Partition the SD card on a Mac and I am not finding that answer.
Bummer...

If all you want to do is update the Emu68 files then copy the new ones onto the existing partition, you don't need to do anything else with partitions.

Don't overwrite your config.txt file unless you plan to re-edit it to add your kickstart file path again.

Andy, No, that is not all I want to do. I want to create a P76 hard drive portion on my SD card so I can load my
WorkBench on there. And then setup a wifi connection and hopefully get my HDMI working from there. because
it is not working from where is is now. And I can only find instructions on how to do that on a Windows machine,
which I do not have.
Thanks

Any answer to this question. I have my Picasso96 setup exactly like the PIStorm in instructions explain how to .
But when I go into P96 Preferences why do I get this as my Board and not Emu64-VC4?

I wouldn't care about names so much. Just attach the settings you want to use to the (only) board you have. And delete the other settings entry, it only creates confusion.

And I can only find instructions on how to do that on a Windows machine,

Maybe these will help: https://github.com/captain-amygdala/pistorm/wiki/Musashi-and-Emu68-on-the-same-%C2%B5SD,-booting-from-the-same-drive#Repartitioning

Ignore everything else in this entry, but the repartitioning section will help with the theory. I've not got the kit to test the instructions.

If you get the latest build of emu68-tools from here, there are now two versions of the video card driver, with the old and new names. Otherwise it's the same file but it will help avoid confusion.
