WTT: Have NTSC A1000, want PAL A1000!
« on: March 27, 2009, 01:06:15 PM »
A long-shot I know but I have an NTSC A1000 (with step-down tranny) that I intend to convert to UK spec over time. However, on the off-chance there's someone out there who wants to go the other way I thought I'd see if anyone wants to trade and save me a lot of time and effort :-D

I'm also open to buying a broken PAL A1000 for the parts.

(Edited as I got title the wrong way around!)

Not having a PAL capable A1000 really sucks. I suppose there's more to the switch-over than a simple Agnus replacement?

I just remembered something... I've got a disk entitled PAL 100%. It was part of a batch of disks I received w/ an A1000. Haven't tried it out yet, but could anyone confirm that this could be a software solution to our problem or was that disk designed for use with the Fatter NTSC/PAL Agnus?

Guess I'll find out when I get back home...

New Agnus, clock crystal and PSU at least I think.

I'm thinking I can source the Agnus and crystal from a scrap A500. The PSU will be a bit trickier to source I suspect!

simple PAL mod:
- PAL Agnus
- stepup transformer

more sophisticated:
- 220V PSU
- PAL RF modulator (if required)

complete (for genlock/A2024 compatibility):
- 28.375 MHz clock generator

A PLCC Agnus (square) from an A500 or A2000 rev 4.1+ does NOT fit, only a DIP type (lengthy) from A1000 or A2000 rev 4.0.

There's no way to switch the OCS Agnus by software; you can at best 'emulate' PAL for full software compatibility but will never see the lower part.

Is or was there ever a PLCC to DIP adapter for the A1000's Agnus? Wouldn't that be dreamy  :-)

I stand corrected, it is the 8367 Agnus I'd need which is, as you say, 1000 and 2000 specific.

Well, I can but hope! If all else fails I'll stump up for a european A1000 if I can find one at a good price and sell the US one.

I've got a mostly dead A2000 rev 4.0 that might donate its Agnus if you're in dire need. :-)

Now have a 240v PSU, so interested in the 8367 if it's still going :-) You have PM.

Cheers,
Steve

OK,

got it out and verified that's it's actually a 8367. Since the machine is pretty dead (at least the PSU) I've got no idea whether the Agnus is still alive.
If I manage I'll package it securely tomorrow - don't think I can cram it into a 1.25€ envelope, so that probably makes it 3€ for postage to UK. I'll keep you posted.  :-)

Funny episode: that A2000 I rescued over ten years ago out of the trash container and after testing it briefly (pretty much dead) it got stored away. Just today when I opened it I found a warranty sticker from the shop I worked for until 15 years ago - with my mark on it. Obviously that machine had once been repaired by me...

You were repairing Amigas all those years ago? I'd have liked that job :-)

Will be happy to reimburse you for postage and throw in enough for a pint, thanks for taking the time to pull it out.

Cheers,
Steve

Well, finally got round to putting the PSU and agnus in. The machine boots but I appear to have no video out, presumably because I've not replaced the clock yet.

I tried an A520 but get no video out of that with either Agnus. All good fun!

Money was extremely tight back in those days while studying. Working as a technican enhanced that quite a bit - to a point when I quit studying and started working full time. Working with this really was fun at that time as long as you got the spare parts (monitors and printer parts were always a bit difficult) - today it's next to impossible; I've somewhat mastered SMD but BGAs are far beyond me...

BTT:
:-( RTC has nothing to do with video out...
Is there any floppy activity? Just no video? Any display from the monitor whether sync's coming in?

I meant the crystal :-)

The machine sounds like it's booting, seems to get through Kickstart load and then WB OK. I was hoping to use my newly bought CYP 345S but the flippin RGB cable I have is not wired up correctly and it thinks it's getting a SECAM signal   Can't modify the cable either, doesn't have all the pins :-(

Amigas really can be a PITA!

Good luck with this :)

For what it's worth, I ended up making a scart cable with a couple of resistors off the +12 line to drive the appropriate control pins - if you need the schematics, I have 'em somewhere!

Glad to see the 1k is getting use!
Celebrating 21... no, make that 27... years of Amiga use
