AmiBench - What do you want to see..
« on: February 07, 2003, 04:24:48 PM »
Right seeing as you lot have driven me mad. I seem to have found some new found drive for sorting out AmiBench V2.

So then people, What do you want in it.

Do you still want classifieds?
Do you want auctions?

What you will be getting I can tell you is a user rating system, (dependent on feedback - like Ebays)
User Accounts for users.(also to stop spams being sent to the users who post adverts you will no longer place your email on the new version).
Advert Montoring Team - These are going to be a group of people who are going to 'moderate' the adverts when V2 goes live.

Anything else you lot can thing of? The reason I'm asking is that I'm going to get the AmiBench code monkey to keep an eye on this thread.

The new site will have a much better banning system and we hope this will have a good effect. On top of this we will have AdMods :)

I would just suggest to allow more space for comments and replies. The only problem I see with Ebay feedback happens when a person needs to leave negative feedback. Often if you leave negative feedback the other party will too, as a measure of revenge.

Well, I was going to make a new site with AmiBench gone.  But if it's coming back, maybe not.

But I did get as far to setup a test system for the Classifieds/Auctions system I was going to setup.

Take a look at: http://amiga.hostingmountain.com/test

The software I used supports both Classifieds and Auctions.  Looks pretty clean too.

If you're interested I'd be willing to help you with this software, and also if you're currently paying for web hosting, I'd be willing to offer you free hosting in exchange for a simple "sponsered by" message on the site.

Let me know,

Neofree

@Mark

Add some links on Amibench for FREE hardcore pornography archives and some protection on the site to stop people swearing in adverts,

Also name and shame the people who are using Amibench for illegal activities or set up a section just for selling or trading pirate Amiga software (keyfile and crack requests etc etc).

Glad to see Amibench back :)

I dont think auctions are a good idea - it will be like eBay where you have to be hovering over the computer for the last ten seconds of the auction to click the bid button or you get sniped.  I like the current system better (buyer states a price in his ad, and you buy it at this price, no haggling).

The feedback system sounds like a good idea also.  I have bought a load of stuff on Amibench and usually had no problems at all but did get ripped off once (they cashed my cheque but never sent the goods) and this made me wary.

Yesterday, there was some discussion of posting guidelines here at Amiga.org, and now you are re-designing Amibench, though AmiBench is not a discussion site, presumably one thing you will still need is well laid out guidelines for posting an add, or even an auction.

So, because this line of thinking is of interest to me, that is where I will make my comments.

Wayne's guidelines, in additions to the terms of use you already outline.... are a good starting point...but you can make it better.  It could be worded more concisely, in a more eye pleasing format, and also, some simple things should be covered, for example, a classified ad, should be in regards to an item that is for sale.  If it is COMMENTARY or web site feedback, then it should be automatically removed or placed in the appropriate area.

Thats the simple stuff, and quite frankly I find that boring.

If I had a site, I would have more exotic rules.
Number one, I would ban all unnecessary prolixity.
I would require the poster to remain aware of paradigm shifts. Declining optimism should not be overt.

LAAAAAAAAAAWWWWD help me,... sorry having a geek moment, my apologies to the code monkey for having to witness this....

Seems certain Amiga website services become 'household' names, and are not so easily substituted nor deterred.

You may vandalize our services, you may destroy our data, you may characterize people by intense ill will or spite, but we will continue to rise up, because we have strong believes and good will.

Together we will keep the heart and soul of the Amiga community very much alive.

Welcome back 'The Amibench Team'.

Best Regards,

Skippy.

I should clarify, because I'm not sure if I laid out the vision here...

ok you have the rules

rule 1) No PowerPuff girl references....

ok then, when a message is deleted, in its place

it says

--Moderator--message removed for violating forum rules: no PowerPuff girl references

and then, because we are programmers (there is always an error code that signifies 'no error')

There will also be a rules violation, which is 'no rules were violated'.... ok that one will look like:

--Moderator--message removed for violating forum rules: no rule was violated

are you envisioning it now...do you see?  do you see? do you see what life would be like if I ran an amiga website....lol

ok, I must go back to work....I know I'm helping sooooo much...hehe

OK, I moved the "test" site to fix all the problems.

It's now fully functional:  http://auction.amiga.hostingmountain.com

This system does include a feedback system, and gives buyers and sellers to choose easily between auction and classifieds.

And looks as nice as eBay! :)

Good to see you back online !
I disagree that you need more eyecandy.
One of the reasons I like Amibench so
much is that it is friendly to low spec
Amigas. It takes me an age to load a
page from amiga.org cause of all the
avatars and smileys etc. Maybe I should
get a better browser? (currently using
latest version of Voyager on 040/28).

Firstly, thanks Mark for reconsidering AmiBench.
Great to have it back!

The current layout of AmiBench is brilliant.  It's incredibly fast (on this 060
box), easy to navigate and easy to find what you're looking for.

I'd agree a user authentication system is a must have, to deter the morons.

Two other things I'd like:
1. Is a help request section.  Currently you
see a lot of "wanted adds" for people asking about how do do things, and for
advice. Obviously that's not the right place to do it, A.org is more appropriate
for that.  But in addition to the sell and wanted sections, is a 3rd section
called "information" or something.  The idea being that it's not a forum, but a
place to post 1 add asking for information.  Replies are direct to the user, not
to the column.

2. Instead of (or in addition to) the "view by country" section, a "view by day"
section would be handy.  E.G you could see all wanted adds which have been
posted in the last 4 days.

Just a few thoughts....

Thanks again,
Anthony.

As the AmiBench code monkey (cheers, Mark :), I've been looking over your
suggestions.

So far, I'm going to implement the following features:
- user accounts (need to be verified with a VALID email address)
- automatic/human ad moderating
- user ratings
- currency conversion
- all responses go through AmiBench - real email addresses never displayed
- nice moderator/administrator tools
- in-depth user logging
- viewing preferences (ads since last visit, ads since last week, etc)

Possible features:
- a third "help required" section
- picture uploads (server space permitting)

If you have any more (constructive!) ideas, either post them here or email me
at neil@amibench.org.

Cheers,
Neil Caunt
