Linux on laptop

My sister has recently acquired a laptop with Windows XP. Would it be possible to install Linux as a duel boot? she has been told it would use too much memory (she might have meant hard drive space though - she isn't that knowledgable on computers).

A bit of a hassle....

Can she partition the HD so she has a free 1 gb drive?(more is better)

Is the Linux install for you or your sister. There's lots of "live CD's" you can download and burn so you can see if your hardware is supported.

I've been using a distro called dynebolic
Dynebolic site

Its a live distro that come with all the multimedia apps you need for Audio/Video production.

It will even let you "nest" you home directory on the C: section of your windows intall without having to partition your hard drive, so its like a no hassle Linux ditro on your Windows laptop.

The Linux install is for my sister, I havn't seen the laptop yet (though I suspect she'll get me to install it). thanks for the suggestions, I'll pass them on to her. I'll see if I can get the specs of the machine.

1. Make sure your sister have the complete back up all important data and files.
2. Prepare windows XP install disk.
3. Use Bootit to create new e2fs or e3fs partitions (at least 2, 10 GB and 1 GB).

Just download the SuSE 9.2 DVD ISO, and boot from the CD.

It'll autoresize the harddisk for her, and is very much a "Windows Replacement" style distro.
