Amiga 1200, Power supply
« on: January 25, 2009, 01:04:28 PM »
Hi everybody.

I've just bought a Amiga 1200, for about 33,- USD, (27 EUR)
The TV-connection is probably broken, but the Video-connection is working. I bought it without a power supply and mouse.

So, my question is, can I use my Amiga 500 power supply, for my Amiga 1200?, and same question regarding the mouse?.

Regards, Tommy

Depends on how much Ampere your PS supplies. To run an A1200 you need at least 3A@5V, better IMO are 4,5A. Just take look at the back of your PS to get that information.

The mouse will be no problem :)

I think I used a A500 PSU for my a1200 back in the day.
But remember having problems when installing a 060 turbo-board & 3.5" Harddrive. The PSU couldnt power it.
So if you plan to upgrade it with turbo-board and HD, you can get hold of a cheap PC PSU and get this.
Or just make one your self. Google tells you how ;-)

Yes you can use the power supply and mouse on either..the A500 suppies are generaly better if they are the heavy type...especialy for an expanded A1200 as they supply more power.

Yes, you can use your A500 power supply on your A1200 :-)
My A1200 has a A500 power supply connected with no problem, with 030 acc. and a 2,5" ide harddrive.

Great, I'd like to install a 2,5" hdd. Thank you all, for your help. Its good to find such enthusiasm for such old hardware.

I got my first A500 17 years ago, and the A1200 2 years later. And now I've finally got it again  :-D

Do you know any "dummy"-guides for installing a 2,5" hdd? And what about the software, can I prepare everything on my PC, and make it bootable on my amiga from the PC.

I've got a 80gb which i'm not using.

You can set up a similar hardware environment in WinUAE and install Workbench etc on your hard drive.

One word of caution! Make sure the HD cable is properly oriented and that it is exactly on the connector pins correctly. I remember the day I installed my Toshiba drive off by 1 set of pins and it smoked my mobo.  :madashell:  Had to take it in for repair. Seem to remember it killed my floppy drive and some of the I/O ports. Luckily back then they could fix it.
Like I say, please be carefull!

There's more than 1 type of A500 PSU around. Mine says 60Watts, it's the "heavy" type and I'm using a Blizzard1240/40 + 2.5"hd + network card without any problems.
Don't know about the other types, the A1200 I have came with a 30Watt PSU that I never used

Mine is light as a feather and delivers 4.5A on the +5V rail.

To be sure, read the label under the brick.

Or adapt a PC AT/ATX power supply instead. Plenty of "juice" to toss all the hardware you want without hassle.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
