!!HELP!! In need of revitilising a poor old A600
« on: November 13, 2005, 02:42:20 PM »
Having just added an A600 to my Amiga Collection, I'm asking for a bit of help from fellow Amigans. This cute little computer is suffering from a broken floppy, and I either need a replacement, or a way of setting up it's HD from UAE.

Can a PC floppy drive be re-wired to work in an Amiga, or can UAE format a bootable HD nativly in FFS?

Finally, a few months ago I saw a news item on this site from someone about to manufacture A600 accelerators.  Does anyone know weather the accelerators were actually made, and if yes, where and how can I buy one?  Alternativy, if someone has a spare accelerator for this cute little computer, I'll gladly buy it!

Thanks to everyone in advance!

I took an A500 floppy out and slapped it in my A600.  It more or less fits, but required a small piece of the case to be filed down so that the eject button would move correctly.

WinUAE can format n hard drive to go in an A600, but you'll probably need a 44pin (2.5") to 40pin (3.5") adapter which will probably cost more than a new floppy drive.

Jens Schoenfeld of Individual Computing http://www.ami.ga is considering making a new 68030 accelerator for the A600 if he gets enough interest.

No-one is going to give you an A600 accelerator, they sell for about 250-350 UK pounds (See Here) ~500 Euro!

Some drives did have jumpers to make them compatible with the internal amiga floppy drives but current pc drives are not at all or perhaps very difficult to 'adapt'

If you need a 44 to 40 pin adapter to connect your harddisk to your UAE pc you can find them fairly cheap (about 3 Euro/$/GBP) on ebay like:

You CAN find an M-Tec T630 (68030@42Mhz) board from Animart at 90 Euro. I bought one recently and I'm very happy! I also bought from Animart an 68882@40Mhz FPU. The site is www.animart.pl but you can reach them only by mail.
Congratulation on buying the A600.
You can mount your HD in your PC using UAE and install everything from scratch and then put the HD back in the miggy.
Don't hesitate to PM if you have any question. I believe also that on Vesalia you can find a DD internal drive.

Thanks for the information, all of you.  I have now reformatted the HD using WinUAE.  I already had a 2.5"IDE to 3.5"IDE adaptor lying around, since I'm a tech by day (and an Amiholic by night).  Will definitly contact Animart to by the M-Tec accelerator, since 90 Euros is definitly very reasonable for an Amiga accelerator. Hopefully, they still have a few in stock.
