Reflowing is an attempt at resoldering the existing pins, sometimes when the PPC chip itself is okay this could work. It's worth a shot, ask JJ at Amiga Center what he charges for a reflow attempt. I believe I paid € 150,- euro for mine, but that included fixing the 68060.

Sometimes the PPC gets damaged by applying pressure to the cooler when placing the card in an A4000, in that case reflowing will not help.

Repairing could be worthwhile, if you have a source of NEW PPC's. Reballing them (re-attaching the lead balls at the bottom om the IC) is too expensive as they need a custom made raster.

@Framiga

Does ATE still make that resodering on PPCs ? Could be worth a try if you get a PPC from a Mac card.

Both Amiga Center and Anthony Hoffman here in NZ both stated that the PPC side is basically unfixable and to leave it as a CSMKIII is the best option for it.

Anthony has always been an honest person to deal with so if that's what he says I'm more than happy to accept his advice.

@dangermouse

Resoldering BGA's is probably not for everyone, I doubt any of the guys that fix Amiga cards has any equipment to do that.
I'd risk and send it to ATE, eventhough never saw a report from any Amiga user that has used their service. Might be expensive too, but IIRC it wasn't that expensive comparing to the prices at AmigaCenter and specially considering ATE has special equipment to deal with BGAs. One problem though is that they problably don't know what an Amiga is :) Or you might end up with a screwed up card instead of the 68k side working but I doubt it, after all they're just resoldering the PPC.

Thanks for the tip but, to be honest, I've accepted that it's 'just' a CSMKIII now and I'm happy with that. I've got other PPCs that work and an A1 arriving shortly so, even if I got it fixed, I probably would only be doing so to make it 'whole' again rather than actually having any immediate need for it.

I might even sell it as a CSMKIII and put the money I'm not spending in trying to get it repaired into a known working CSPPC. Might even work out cheaper doing it that way rather than a) spending money on what could be a failed attempt or even worse b) spending money and ending up losing a perfectly fine 060.

One last thing.is there any way to disable the PPC processor? Kinda annoying that some benchmarking / sysinfo tools will just hang or crash the machine when querying the PPC.

Temporarily rename "ppc.library" to "ppc.library.renamed"?
