68060 3000 Tips Needed
« on: December 03, 2005, 03:09:26 AM »
I'm still interested in any tips anyone has in making more stabil the operation of an MKII in a 3000. I get GURUs off and on using this machine and I suppose its older software that hasen't been upgraded over the years.

Any tips are appreciated and the ones I've already gotten are well noted.

Thanks

JLW

Please tell us more about your setup.

I'd suggest a clean OS 3.9 setup, a good working set of ram, and the proper libs installed.

Make sure the contacts on the fast slot and the accelerator are clean.
Anyway is the only way

3000 motherboard with normal older chipset. No new chips that I know of. older 1 gig segate on the motherboard SCSI, a SCSI CD, SCSI Zip and an oder 10 gig full width drive on the external connection. Not using the MKII Scsi,

2 simms that add up to ~76 meg. 3.9 installed, Picasso II. C= 2065, ADSL internet connection.

Do you have a heatsink on your 060 or should I have one?

GURUs are variable and eratic. No a real serious problem. I am runing Executive which might be a mistake,

Alway wondering. I'm pretty happy with the way it works just some nags.

Thanks for the note

Your's a similar setup to mine.

Not much I can suggest though. Make sure everything is seated properly, cyberstorm contacts are clean, and then:

Try some different ram sticks, and check your scsi chain for proper termination.

I had some similar problems (guru and stuff) when I was running with a 3640, and at the time had noticed that the hard disk light was blinking in a predefined interval. When I was to load something when the HD light was light, I got a guru. I guess it was something that had to do with scsi, but I'm not sure. Try working withough any external scsi devices.

Also, for some reason, NetBSD wouldnt boot when I had ram on both the cyberstorm and the motherboard. Got rid of the mobo ram, and NetBSD was happy.

The above apply only if your' gurus are random. If you can pin point them to specific apps, then it's just that.
Anyway is the only way

Hi wheels. I'm afraid I have more Qs than As... It does sounds like something is overheating. If executive is what I think it is, something that allows asynchronous operations within the WB, yes I'd try to disable it just to see. You have to take every suspect bit out of the way, and test your lego machine brick by brick.

Now for my questions :
How hot does a 50MHz 060 operate without any cooling ?
Does the
apollo4060  accept a replacement crystal ?
Why are 66MHh 060 CPUs available when I though  that only the crystal oscillator determined the CPU speed ?
Is that latter 66MHh installable in an apollo4060  (fitted in an A3000) ?
Also, what are the differences between this appolo 060 board and the others (bliz/DCE, Viper, etc)? Is that true that it can only take 64Mb of RAM ? How so ? I mean why ? :-?

Thank you !

Usually pretty cool.

The CPU speed rating is the speed Motorola guarantee that this particular CPU will handle. What speed you decide to run it on (determined by the crystal oscillator) is entirely up to you. You can e.g. run a 66 MHz rated chip on 50 MHz, or vice versa. But overclocking (running the CPU at a higher speed than its rated speed) voids your warranty, may damage your hardware and may shorten the life expectancy of your CPU.

When I still had my A1200 with Blizzard1260/50Mhz,
it was getting véry hot. It all depends on what type
of 68060 is mounted on the accelerator.
Take a look at this link:

www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1482

An "MC" runs much cooler than a "XC" processor.

I can kill executive no problem. The 68060 is in an MKII, it gets too hot to touch which is not really that hot for electronic parts. I don't have a heatsink so I should get something for it.

I'm wondering about pulling the zips. That might be a good idea from the heat and power standpoint.

I had a lot of trouble with my MKII, it would guru all the sudden with no real reason. The solution to my problem has that I was using a 060 library which were too old even though I thought I had the newest.
