Title: AMIGA RPG's
Post by: XDelusion on December 10, 2002, 08:11:17 AM
 Guess I'll start another list:
What are some of the Amiga RPG's out there, of course I am aware of King's Quest, Space Quest, Monkey Island and the like, but weren't there some other Zelda or Dragon Warrior/Final Fantasy style RPG's out there as well?

There were a lot of them, like Eye of the Beholder and Ishar series for example. They are no match for ADOM though ;)

Speris Legacy was a nice one if you like the
older Zelda games.

Wasted Dreams is the best ever RPG game for Amiga. It also supports 2 players. All is animated and is really fun to play. One of Vulcans best made games.

Hmmm, most titles you mention there are not RPGs, but Adventures...

I do not know about Final Fantasy Style RPGs, but some of the best (Western-Style) RPGs
on the Amiga are:

- Ambermoon
- Amberstar
- Eye of the Beholder series
- Dungeonmaster/Chaos strikes Back
- Legend of Faerghail (did you know that Olaf Barthel had developed this one ? :) )
- Ultima 4-6
- Pool of Radiance and some other SSI RPGs

Ah, Ambermoon. One of the best ever. Too bad I never got
Amberstar to work on the A4000.

Still, Dungeon Master is one of the all time best "first person games"
(Chaos Strikes back was too difficult to map
in my opinion). The custom magic/experience system is
excellent, not like the AD&D level crap. Followed closely by
Black Crypt which was a lot more technically advanced but
lacked some of the DM feel.

Eye of the Beholder 1&2 (number 2 in particular) and
Dungeon Master 2 were also excellent in their way, but not
 even near the leading pack.

I don't know if Hired Guns can be classified as a RPG
(probably not), but you sure learn to know your characters
through the long campaign at it involves plenty of strategy
and inventory-planning similar to RPG:s.

Awsome, this list will help a lot! Thankx for all the input.

As for Final Fantasy 2 and 3 in the states...

Actually 2 was Japan's 4, and 3 was the Japanese Children's version of 6. The real part 2 looked and played exactly like part 1, except that it took about 3 months to beat, as apposed to a few days, and the story was really plain, and the game went on and on and on with no real reason what so ever. Part 3 was  totally different for the Final Fantasy series at that point, in that the quests, stories, look, and whole lay out of the game in general was nothing compared to the 1st two of the series, as well as the games to come afterwards.

As for the American 3, you can play it in full with added movie sceens on the Sony Playstation now, or else you can get a SNES rom of the japanese part 6, and patch it to run in English, though for some reason the latest patch locks up my game during the beginning cinemas. :/

Too bad Amiga never had RPG Maker 2k...

Well here are my favorites and I do not think anyone else mentioned my #1.

1)  Black Crypt by Raven (who went on to do so many  other games for the PC)  EHB mode.  :)

2)  Pool of Radiance - Simple Charming and very addicting.

3)  Bard's Tale (Actually it is kinda my #1) - Heck it inspired my bbs (down for now.)  :-o

4)  Ambermoon

5) Eye of the Beholder

6) Ishar 3

Ok, well that is my 2 bits...
 :-D

you mentioned games like Monkey Island before, and that's an adventure game I know, but if you like that, then you should know that Simon the Sorcerer II is a game, quite newly released for the Amiga, that is a blast to play.

Btw, anyone into Interactive Fiction here? (textbased games... you know, Infocom stuff..  :-D)

Yes, I tried the playstation version.
They ruined it!

Loading time during fights.
Even changed the way it goes into a fight.

I hated it.

The only good version I know of is SNES version.
Maybe the superfacmicon.
Probably the same thing.

If it works in Frotz, I'm game. Or something: some interesting non-game stuff's out there. Check it out.
The Amiga engine (port) works, which equals that Amiga is #1 for this stuff. For me anyway.

I liked Downtown Tokyo. Present Day for instance. Infocom stuff seems pretty tough actually, but maybe it's a cultural thing.

The best ever Amiga RPG was "Quest for Glory 2 - So you want to be a hero?". For the future, I'm really looking forward to Dafel:Bloodline. Hope it doesn't go the way of Evil's Doom...

sure, quest for glory 2 was a good game too, but it was more a mix of adventure/rpg than a real rpg.
About Dafel Bloodline, it seems to be reported, that's a pity since it was nearly finished, and evil's doom was heavily pirated just before the public release, so, hope it won't happen with dafel too (if it release one day of course ;) )

> sure, quest for glory 2 was a good game too, but it was more a mix of adventure/rpg than a real rpg.

True. It was a bloody good mix though. I really felt like I knew some of those characters personally. :-)

> and evil's doom was heavily pirated just before the public release

Ah, it's all coming back to me now. I wonder how close they were to being finished, though. Even if it was pirated, certainly they would have earned more from it if it was released than otherwise. Really too bad they cancelled it. Even in it's shareware form, it was far better and more polished than many commercial games.

Ahh, I'm glad for a thread like this one ;-)  I have many fond
memories of so many games.  On the list of my favorite RPG's lives an
oft looked over title, MegaTraveller.  It did fairly well and inspired
a sequel.  I really liked the fact that MegaTraveller came with
a character generator, which could spit out a printable file
for the pen/paper version of the game.

Another title in a simular vein was Infocom's "Battletech: The
Crescent Hawks Inception". While it was done by Infocom, it wasn't a
text-adventure.  At the time of beating the game, the player could
send in the I.D. of the "hidden mech" at the end of the game along
with the "proof of purchase" to recieve a Ral Partha miniture.  I have
that miniture around here somewhere... :-D

Text adventures..: FireBird released some nice ones too. "Silicon
Dreams" and "Jewels of Darkness" come to mind.
