Title: Thanks to Danamania and the rest of you! Powerbook fixed
Post by: amigadave on October 18, 2005, 11:34:58 PM
Danamania was correct, my inverter board is now replaced and I am back to using my Powerbook for checking email and browsing Amiga.org.  I can't thank all of you enough for your advice.  The advice here was faster and better than two other Mac websites.

Thanks again, and for any of you that have similar problems, don't waste the money to send your powerbooks to a service shop unless you are completely unable to handle small tools.  The replacement was a breeze and took only about 5 minutes from start to finish.    :-D

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!!!!!

My fixed Powerbook only worked for one week and has the same symptoms again!  What could be killing my inverter board?  I hate to have to send my powerbook out to a shop to be fixed when I am capable of replacing parts myself.

Acill, Danamania, anyone have any other ideas for which part to replace next? (along with another $80 inverter board that must be ruined again)

That Powerbook is my main machine and I hate being without it.

That sucks dude! My 867MHz 12" powerbook is like a tank. It's dented in a lot of spots, the connector for the left speaker is busted. One day i climbed on my desk to get a wire behind the cube wall and ended up laying on my powerbook, hyperextending the screen. Now the screen assembly is bent and the LCD is kind of floating around in there. I'm missing keys on my keyboard, ive spilled a 32oz coke on the machine and had to leave the machine upside down for a day or two. Corroded a few wires in the keyboard assembly, i had to take a pair of pliers to pop all thoes little plastic rivits, used a conductive pen to fix the traces, then i took my soldering iron and some plastic from the front case of a busted pc to redo the rivits on the keyboard... My cdr/dvd combodrive broke, i had to pull the mother board to remove it, i lost the metal cover where the memory expansion is, i used a large sitcker to cover that up.

And i carry it around everyday. Many screws have fallen out, it works great, it keeps on trucking. I think i just got lucky. I'm sure now that ive written this, it will blow up tomorrow.

Seems like the poor Powerbook's really having a tough time. :-o
I hope you're backing up the data on a regular basis...

One of the nice things about macs is the target boot option. With the mac off, hold down 'T' and turn the machine on ( keeping the t button down) This will allow you to emulate a firewire HD. Just use a firewire cable to connect it to another mac, and you can get your stuff off, or use carbon copy cloner to backup the entire drive to a usb drive.

Unfortunately WinXP doesn't recognise the powerbook as an HD in T mode... MacOSX x86 does though... hmmm, naughty Mr Jobs...

More likely MS not adhering to the standards ...as per usual.

I just saw a nice signature on another board:

An infinite number of monkeys typing into an infinite number of computers would eventually produce Windows XP....... and they did.

Being that apple and microsoft use their own proprietary file system formats, i would say neither one is adhering to standards. ( as far as file systems go )
