Title: Genesi announces completion of April (TM) chip for Pegasos
Post by: jedi on December 03, 2002, 12:36:34 PM
From Thendic-France (http://www.thendic-france.com) :

Bplan GmbH and Thendic-France SARL, both soon to be acquired by Genesi S.à.r.l. of Luxembourg, are pleased to announce the development and final certification of the April™ chip. The April chip adds new functionality to the successful Articia chipset developed by Mai Logic Incorporated of Fremont, California. Mai Logic, an innovative technology design house of integrated circuits/systems, worked with bplan to develop the first prototype of the April chip. The April chip enables Mai and Genesi licensees to offer PPC based computer systems that can compete in today’s quickly evolving IT environment. The Pegasos will be the first platform to offer the April chip and will be commercially launched at the Amiga+Retro Computing 2002 in Aachen, Germany 7-8 December (www.amiga-messe.de (http://www.amiga-messe.de)).

"We were very pleased to have worked with Mai Logic on this development," said Gerald Carda, Chief Technology Officer of bplan. "Through our collaborative efforts, we were able to leverage Mai’s expertise in PowerPC-based chipset/system development and manufacturing technologies and our own knowledge of system design, architecture and software to bring the April development to a successful conclusion. The Articia and April can be used together to promote an exciting alternative platform for the desktop, portable computer and sub-notebook marketplace.”

The Pegasos incorporates the Articia and April chip with either a PowerPC™ 750FX processor or a G4 processor, operating at 800 MHz or higher. A dual CPU module release is planned for 2003. In addition to the standard enterprise applications and other state-of-the-art functions to satisfy the most demanding users, the Pegasos platform will offer many state of the art functions. For example, smart card and bar code modules have been prepared to work with the platform. A handheld version of the Pegasos is currently being developed with a planned release in 2003.

Genesi, Innovation for the Future

MorphOS is also being launched at Amiga+Retro Computing 2002. MorphOS is a new operating system for PowerPC RISC microprocessors and was developed for the Pegasos. MorphOS runs on the Pegasos and on the Mai Logic Teron CX and Teron PX evaluation boards. MorphOS functions on 603e, 604e, 750 and 7400 (Original G4) PowerPC processors. In the future MorphOS will also run on other Open Firmware based PowerPC machines. Genesi will also be release an internally developed CD-bootable version of DebianPPC at Amiga+Retro Computing 2002 for Linux users. Additionally, a first quarter 2003 Pegasos release of OpenBSD is expected.

The Pegasos on sale NOW!

Well for one, it enables licensees to 'sell PPC based computer systems that can compete in today’s quickly evolving IT environment'....additionally, it can 'promote an exciting alternative platform'.

And if I may be so bold, it does so with a zip, a bang, and a rum pum pum pum.

@Tickly

It's a chip that enables Mai™ and Genesi™ licensees to offer PPC based computer systems that can compete in today’s quickly evolving IT environment.

Obviously  Mai™ and Genesi™ licensees could not do that without this chip.

The first revision was called eMaiGenesiLicenseeEnabler™. The April™ comes in a 236 pin PGA package (A 35% improvement of the first revision) for easy replacement.

Mai™, Genesi™, eMaiGenesiLicenseeEnabler™ and April™ are registered trademarks by the mentioned trademark holding companies.

Gargh! Even though I'm doing it myself............

We're playing straight into their marketing ploy here.
1. Simply make a 'non-announcing' announcement.
2. Allow newsgroups and forums to discuss the pro's and cons of, er, nothing.
3. Tack on a list of outlets that are prepared to sell you a product with the amazing 'Nothing' ©®ªP™ chip, which is longer than the original 'non-announcement' (actually not to difficult, as it consists of nothing).

I'm sure "BBRV" will appear extolling the virtues of this new, amazing piece of silicon, that will heal the sick, feed the hungry and end world poverty. Amongst other things.
This kinda ploy was used in that "Project Ginger" b*ll*x recently, which after promising much (it's going to change the world, etc), turned out to be a $20,000 scooter.

Still, I'll cut bplan GmbH/Thendic-France SARL/Genesi S.à.r.l./Whatever-their-name's-gonna be-next-week.com some slack here, if it's for sale at the show on the 7th, then we all should know then as to WTF this is really all about.
Right now, it's a whole heap of a non-event.

Yeah, what does this "April" chip do?

Guesses: hardware dongle for MorphOS - MorphOS will only run on motherboards with an April chip on-board, i.e., the Pegasos.

Maybe it is a PCI chip that offers USB2, Firewire and something else?

Or AGA on a chip?

Who knows. The whole press release is fluff. I bet they are orgasming over on ANN over this chip that no-one knows the purpose of.

Uhm sorry about this but April is not your trademark, or at the least its not in America or the UK.
If Microsoft can't trademark "Windows" and NEC can't trademark "Tower", you definately won't be able to trademark "April".

Just to laugh in the face of your pathetic attempts to trade mark the word April every year I will call the 4th month April all month long.

what does it do?
Why announce it if you don't offer any info about what the chip actually does?

this is a somewhat stupid way of advertising...

That was well worth posting.
Why would that be? Care to elucidate why I know nothing about trademark law? Is the law that anyone can just put a TM after something and it suddenly becomes their trademark.

Please I'll admit I know nothing about trademark law, so do tell me all about it and why the word "April" could possibly be trademarked.

That would be a southbridge, possible but I don't see what should
be wrong about the VIA-one used on the current board.

Maybe a special low-power SB for the eclipsis ?

>Or AGA on a chip?

Cool, but a total waste of money.

You can't register a word that is used in the same
sector in which you want your product to be in.

example: You can't call a fruit machine "Apple", but you can call a computer system "Apple".

The windows trademark is different. It has nothing
todo with the fact that those are "normal english
words". The problem with the Windows trademark
is that "Windows" was used to describe certain
functionality on a desktop OS even before Microsoft
registered it.

Post by: Hattig on December 03, 2002, 02:39:14 PM
The current southbridge on the Pegasos only offers USB1, and the Firewire is on another chip. So by making a single ASIC with both USB2 and Firewire, and perhaps other functionality on it, they can add more features to the motherboard without needing more board space.

However I don't expect this to be what this Fool(tm) chip does.

My understanding was that windows is a generic word

http://law.freeadvice.com/intellectual_property/trademark_law/trademark_not_register.htm

As you can see you cannot trademark Generic words.

The word April seems pretty generic to me, but I may be wrong.

@Akura

Trademarks a national, for example "Amiga" is:

Computer-company in the US (not really).
Record-label in east Germany (till 91 or 92)
A generic word in spanish countries.

Some goes for "Apple" (Mac or Beatles ?)

Hi!

What is wrong, some of you cannot stand the suspense?

;-)

Well, here is a little more information:

1. We did not have any problems achieving the trademark, although this is a phased process, first France, then Europe, etc.  It depends on your filing date.  You will see there are no other "computer components" with such a name.  Zacman is on target.

2.  The April can do more than the Articia alone -- did you guys miss the AA part?  ;-)  It is a lady's name!  OK, seriously, we will clarify this in Aachen.

Here are some other points to consider:

We have a Pegasos Debian PPC CD-bootable distro that runs Mac-on-Linux now (and it comes WITH the machine).

The Pegasos is less expensive and does more.

The Pegasos has Open Firmware

The Pegasos has a better form factor and layout, and more interfaces included, for instance firewire.

To bring the machine up, you install hardrive, connect monitor, keyboard, etc., put in the memorystick, power on and then in next couple of seconds you have a fully working MorphOS desktop on display.  :-)

Check it out at www.pegasos-uk.com

And, finally, yes it is a promotional approach, but at least we do pay for our advertising and we have supported every show we could have in the last few months.

Hey, we are trying!

Kind regards,
R&B

What does it do? Simple Question. No Answer. All too familiar.

And OpenFirmware - who cares. At least the AmigaOne will properly initialise all PCI cards with x86 ROMs.

"Better" form factor and layout? Says who? If a case is ATX then it can hold both ATX and MATX boards, so there is no problem there. And at least an ATX case gives you enough space to put drives. And better layout - surely this is subjective, and I had heard rumours that the "better" layout had caused some issues in the past that needed to be fixed.

And that is how most computers work. Nothing special with Pegasos.

And finally, what does this vapor "Alice" chip do? Otherwise what is the point of the press release, apart from to create threads against bThenesidicfranceplan?

"newsflash"
The Pegasos can take x86, and that since far longer than the A1.

Both boards do suffer from the same Articia-bug, and probraly
had problems of their own, but who cares ? The quality of
the end-product is what counts.

Because this is a marketing stunt.

Got to hand it to Bill & the gang, they sure know how to
do the PR in this little curious community. Instead of
people saying "so what - the AOne has that and that..."
all is now gabbing on about what features we
could be talking about in this "mystery chip". Lots of
attention, lots of exposure - with many Amigans looking
for announcments at the Aachen show that otherwise
wouldn't bother.

Ordered my AOne yesterday, so I'm pretty much immune
(can't afford a Pegasos, even if i wanted one), but I must
still congratulate Thendic for having probably the
cleverest (sneakiest?) PR-department around. Good for
them!

Paris, France – December 3, 2002. Biplane GBH and Phendic-France SARL, both soon to be acquired by Ginseng. of Borg, are pleased to announce the development and final certification of the April chip.

The April chipset is a quantum leap in computing technology and brings the following features to the Pegasus motherboard:

Nano-Technology.  The April chip acts as a barracks for an army of nanobots that will actively repair any damage to the motherboard or its components within minutes.

RAM doubling.  Due to its advanced memory compression algorithms, the April chip effectively doubles any RAM inserted into the Pegasus’ RAM slots.  You can now insert a cheap 512mb DIMM and get a full 1Gb of memory available running at twice the speed!

On-board Graphics.  This amazing chip also replaces your existing, expensive AGP graphics card with it’s own ground-breaking custom 4D Graphics engine.  Now you can run Quake II at a resolution of  5120x3840 in 256 bit colour at a whopping 1000 fps.  You don’t even need to connect your monitor to the motherboard as the display will be “beamed” directly to the nearest monitor/TV to the computer.

Plasmawire.  We are proud to announce that the April chip will also upgrade the existing Firewire slot to the new Plasmawire standard which can transfer data faster than ever before so that data reaches it’s source before it is even sent!  Yes, that’s right!  Using Time Distortion technology borrowed from the Time Lords of Galifrey, the April chip looks forward in time to see what data you intend to send, them moves backwards in time and sends it resulting in you transmitting the data before you even know you want to send it in the first place!!!  Amazing.

Wireless Networking.  You asked for it and now you have it!  Thanks to the April chip you can now control your electric toothbrush directly from MorfOS.  Our included software update automatically starts your toothbrush in the morning, causes it to jump from the bathroom cabinet, wander across the floor, hop into bed with you and brush your teeth wile you are asleep!!!  Contrary to certain rumours circulating that a bug in MorfOS causes the toothbrush to mistake another orifice for your mouth, this is simply not true.  The fact that Ralph’s hemorrhoids mysteriously vanished while he was betatesting the software and that half his teeth are now missing is just coincidence.

Regards,

Darrin

April If I remember was the name of one of the chips that was going into C='s AAA chipset

The Boxer had AA emulation  so nothing new there it just never worked. :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

Surely However, using the NorthBridge as AA emulator is adding a bottle neck to the system.

Well, you can use PC expansion cards in the AmigaOne due to its BIOS, the PCI and AGP cards everyone seems to want. OpenFirmware does the job well enough, but there's not as much variety out there as their x86-ROMed counterparts. That's the point of the x86 support in AmigaOne rather than them using OpenFirmware, which I think is a neat idea.

I'm not even sure where to buy OpenFirmware cards, but there's lots of places around here to buy the PC counterparts for use in an AmigaOne, and I bet they're cheaper than the OpenFirmware versions too. It seems the Amiga community wants the el-cheapo cards from their local PC superstore or Ebay or old parts from a PC they are updating, and OpenFirmware is a bit of a trip-up for these folks.

Pegasos had this x86 emulation for cards way before AmigaOne had it.
You can use *BOTH* regular peecee cards *and* OpenFirmware cards in Pegasos.

You can register the trademark 'Microsoft Windows' just not 'Windows'.

In america, there is a company called 'Domino's Pizza'...that is perfectly legal, but they lost a suit to Domino's Sugar for calling themselves simply 'Domino's' one time too many times...(or routinely)...but they didn't change their name, they just remember to call themselves 'Domino's Pizza'.

anyway, they can call it the April chipset if they want, and if you develop chipsets, expect to use a different name, now if you are in the calendar business, don't get too upset, you'll be just fine.....

my personal take was this was a ploy to pretend they now have a 'custom' chipset, which BTW just shows how this company really knows their target audience, wherease Amiga, Inc. is still blind and clueless.

yes, its probably marketing silliness, but a lot of people (not all but enough) wanted a custom chipset, and the customer is always right.

Why can't people buy what they want?  Heck if someone just needs a custom chipset for nostalgia reasons, that is no different, than hmmm getting a truck even if you don't really use the bed....let people get what they want for chrissakes....

you know what, and I don't think they're completely wrong...look at the consoles...its neat having the custom chipset for programmers to tweak more and more out of, years after they are getting long in the tooth....a computer, like a console, but is a real computer....wow, we could call it something like 'home computer'....wonder if that would have a market....:))

oops almost ranting now...anyway, buh bye.

The announcement is designed to create attention for the Aachen show.

Is it any different than Amiga Inc. announcing that there would be a huge announcement at WOASE? (all it turned out to be was the MS deal)

The chip has a brand new version of Amithlon built right in.

You don't have to pay for the software anymore.

2. The April can do more than the Articia alone -- did you guys miss the AA part? It is a lady's name! OK, seriously, we will clarify this in Aachen.

Quote
To bring the machine up, you install hardrive, connect monitor, keyboard, etc., put in the memorystick, power on and then in next couple of seconds you have a fully working MorphOS desktop on display.

Something tells me that it is a custom chip that contains also something about GFX!!! What was the AA? Why didn`t he mention a gfx card and he first mentioned a harddrive? (maybe that would be in the etc :-P)

Anyway it would be very cool to have a custom chip but not necessary ( a must) read my opinion about custom chips here (http://amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43687)

Post by: bbrv on December 04, 2002, 07:47:53 AM
OK, last word before Aachen Show....

The is no Mai without April.  The Articia does not work as promoted.  There.  We have said it.  Everything that has been promised for the AmigaOne and the Pegasos will not work without April -- April is *mostly* a "patch."   With April the Articia will work as advertised, without April the Articia will not.  Betatesters of the A1 and the "Betatester (Pegasos)" know that there are difficulties.

In September and October bplan developed the "patch" with Mai.  There is no other patch for the Articia and there was no other assistance from anyone else in creating it.    This is why the Pegasos, A1 and Teron are not available in quantity and  why they will not be until the patch is mounted on the respective PCBs and shipped.

Check out the estimated shipping dates at the YDL site.  Do you think they will get anywhere else sooner?  Where is the biggest market?  Is it MorphOS and OS4, or is it LinuxPPC?  Where do you think Mai will focus?  Not here (MorphOS/OS4)!  Our sales commitments for the first 1000 Pegasos went 817 to Linux and the rest to this community (less two for OpenBSD and two for OpenBeOS).

Mai does not care about this market.   They care about the Linux market.  They want to sell the Articia and their board.  They make chips and want to sell them.  LinuxPPC is a bigger market for them.  That will be their new focus.  We are the poor stepchild now.  Please forget all the delusions about the new Amiga or the Pegasos that will re-conquer the world when the hardware shows up.  If we want success this is going to be hard work and a long haul.

In the meanwhile, you won't have to worry about MorphOS or OS4 being pirated by someone here now.  There is a whole new world of potential users with an OpenSource/Freeware  mentality that is about to consume this market and make it more irrelevant.  This is a post-Napster world.... and Napster was only the beginning.  Individual "freedom" has replaced respect for others.  Something is wrong with this picture and it needs to be fixed, but it will not happen with dongles.

If this community wants a future it needs to start working together.  We are spending plenty of money to make the Pegasos successful, but it is not our final focus.  We are a niche market -- both OS4 and MorphOS.  We need unity if we want to be more than a lingering historical footnote.

The Mai story is not over yet.  The first patch is not enough.  We figured this out in November when Mai was scurrying back to Tiawan to make what they thought would be the final solution.  It is not.  There are more problems.  We finally solved all this a week and a half ago.  Plus, we have added a couple of other features that are better accomplished in hardware than software (and don't believe a few lines of code will make the first patch work).  If YDL sets off on their current course, they will "crash and burn" in a month after they finally introduce the product.  The Linux market is unforgiving when it comes to hardware bugs.  With all the success they will seem to achieve their liability will grow correspondingly.

Before you think this is another marketing stunt, here is something new.  We know what Eyetech pays for the Teron/A1; we know what the A1 distributors pay.  We would be willing to match the prices all around less 5% and provide an immediate solution to the community.  We make the Pegasos.  Eyetech does not.  We have many of the same distributors.  We can compensate Allan Redhouse through his success (something he is clearly about to loose with YDL Teron pricing).  Hyperion too.  Oh yes, you want to buy a G4 A1?  Wake up people!  Read the disclaimers on the YDL site.  Do you understand what needs to happen before this will?  There is a Pegasos G4 now.  The question is not how fast the processor *can* work, the issue is how fast the processor *does* work!  Let's get better organized.  We are about to be crushed.

If we pulled eveyone together on this we might even honor those $50 coupons!  :-D

This market and community is in complete confusion.  There is no leadership or vision and we need both fast or we can forget it.  This is a public statement in good faith to Eyetech and Hyperion.  Allan and Ben are formidible marketing opponents.  We can forget the past if you can.  We need to get into the same boat.  Amiga Inc. has lost its leadership mantel.  Selling coupons, promoting unachievable concepts and making wild claims about the next deal have worn tired and false.  Fortunately, all have not blindly followed this route and Hyperion and Eyetech have a solid agreement in place that protects them in the event of Amiga Inc bankruptcy.  And, before you think this is a "group hug" thing, we have paid our King County, Washigton legal counsel a retainer.  We will commence legal action against Amiga Inc. this month.  This is not some "get legal" BS.  This is business and the Amiga Inc. management do not understand what business is.  They "blew it" and we have had enough of their interference in our future.

The whole Mai/YDL collaboration has changed the situation dramatically.   We hope this statement helps you understand this better.

We will give Hyperion a board.  We will support the A1 Betatesters as we have our own.  We don't have to trade sources or get Ralph having a beer with Ben, but we could all move ahead this way.  Eyetech can certify the Pegasos to meet Amiga specifications -- they are positioned to do this.  Hyperion and Eyetech can promote OS4.  Great.  We might even develop some collaborative efforts quickly.  We should.

Things are moving very fast.  We have alot to do.  Thanks for reading this post and please think about it carefully.  See you in Aachen!

Sincerely,

Raquel and Bill

I thought that Eyetech and Hyperion wasn't going to the show (do they have anything to show)?

But an agreement should be very nice indeed. Everyone would benefit from this. The community and the companies themselves. Perhaps mostly the Eyetech/Hyperion camp. It would give them a flying start.

(Well, if that kind of cooperation would become a reality, it would be no need anymore to speak about "camps" and "us and them" anymore. Everyone would benefit from this, IMHO!)

@takemehomegrandma:

Yes, I remembered just when I had already posted it. But maybe at least Ben (since it's not that far for him to Aachen) visits the fair privately?

As Thendic's statement indicates, it's really necessary for both brothers (MOS/OS4) to work together against the "enemy" both do have in common.

And with the Pegasos (with April) being the only bugfree PPC-board currently, it would really make even more sense for Eyetech to cooperate as Thendic offered to them. Otherwise both "camps on the same side" might lose against the Linux-plans of Terrasoft & Mai.

As Ralph said regarding the April-chip: "In the total scope of the computer market...sure..no big deal. But for the current ppc battlefield it is a big deal as it is a matter of Shakespeare's phrase in Hamlet."

That long post has to be taken in context. Bill Buck wasn't some kind of saint trying to preserve the Amiga like comes across from just that one post. I remember all too well the things that were happening back then from both camps, and that was ultimately what put me off getting a Pegasos.

By the way, I just installed FE on my trusty A1XE yesterday (you know, the one with Articia but no April). Still working nicely, just as I like it.

No Saint indeed, but he was bang on the money on every point. (except the flawlessly bit, hence Peg2).

What put me off Pegasos (I was into Amiga hardware at the time) was simply that it didn't run AmigaOS, so I couldn't see the point back then... when I eventually tried MorphOS out on a Peg, after trying AmigaOS on A1s (se and xe) I realised my mistake and was quickly sold on it though.

Not having 'the name' back then was demonstrably a big disadvantage, and to some degree (much smaller now) still is.
How to get someone to try something they've not heard of, and think they're probably not going to like (even if it tastes as sweet as honey?)

(Ironically I found this searching for info on April... wondering whether XMOS might have been configurable to do the same job... had it been on the A1s.)

I was less than impressed by the behaviour from both sides at times but not so much that it put me off buying, hence I have both a Peg1 and an A1XE and they both still work.
(That said, my A1 is stuck on 4.0 dev install as I cannot get 4.1FE to reinstall ATM)

Pegasos 2 was good hardware at its time. But it could not beat Macs except on pricing. I recall Macs were very expensive back then...

When I looked into my next gen Amiga many many years ago I looked at a A1 or a Peg II.

Genesi treated me very well.  The other side threw mud, which turned me off and made the decision easy.

I never regretted that decision.  Even though my peg II was well out of warranty, Bill Buck personally saw that I was shipped a new cpu free of charge and with good followup.  From my perspective he was great to work with and kept his word with me.

Bill and Trevor should talk, both are interesting fellows and perhaps they might have some valuable thoughts to discuss.

Interesting still to this day, I would rather use my classic.  I have MOS on a powebook, which is a very nice os for sure, but I still like my trusty 3000... Funny...

My experience with Bill Buck/Genesi was positive. He seemed genuinely interested in creating a new Amiga experience at the time. Perhaps certain things didn't go according to plan for whatever reason.

Would be interesting to see what Trevor and Bill could come up with if they put their heads together.

I personally own two Pegasos-IIs (one runs MorphOS the other AmigaOS 4.1FE).

Sigh.. That was almost 15 years ago :) I remember making a review of MorphOS on the Pegasos 2 (I gues that was MorphOS 1.x back then) and writing: "Right now, only ABox is completed. Hopefully, in the next couple of versions, QBox should get the focus, much like MacOSX and Darwin".

And... 13 years later, still no sign of QBox :)

BBRV were still maintaining a blog a few years ago: http://bbrv.blogspot.fr/

But now it seems to be off too. I wonder what happened to the hardware guys of the Pegasos.
