What are you do with this site??
You completly destroy all good things and i hate all, who do this.
Where I can find all pictures from gallery?
I need few pictures and comments from gallery right now!
New design is overloaded with useless text and graphs.
Old was simply and very comfortable.
But looks like you don't come back it, so I just hate you.
-
Looks like things are getting put back together.
-
@easy_john
Take it easy_john, patience is a virtue. The site is coming along just fine and at an acceptable progression. Thanks to Wayne.
-
Calm down, grow up, and have some sympathy for the people who are doing their best to keep this site running. To post messages of hate to administrators of this site is just horrible. If you hate it here so much, nobody is forcing you to stick around.
-
I agree it would be nice to have the gallery back, but the site is coming along quite nicely in its new format. Thumbs up to mobile support too! Thanks Wayne!

wow, someone had way too much coffee/soda/god knows what!!

Sounds like easy_john is going through amigaporn withdrawl :-) lol

It is nice to see the people suffer from technology advance
Same was with the Vista. I don't think it was the drivers, I think most WinXP users were kept secured and hugged for too long.

I think it's all good, thanks for the hard work, Wayne.
Do we need to resubmit our gallery images?
If so should we wait a while until all changes final?

To the best of my knowledge, all the assets from the original incarnation of the site still exist.
It's principally a matter of replacing the functionality and data importing.

I have 3459 images in an alien format to the new gallery format. As such, I'm fairly doubtful that I could get them uploaded one by one by myself, and since there's no "mass upload" feature and each upload has to be processed by the system to make thumbnails, I'm doubting even the great Karlos could help with a data migration tool.
I've created the categories as they were on the old system (sans the events categories) but wonder if there might be an adventurous few who'd be willing to help with re-uploading the pics themselves.

Is it possible to zip the files up in batches along with any associated metadata / posts? Then various volunteers could upload the images and put in as much of the old info as possible. I'd be willing to work away at some as time permits. Just PM me if there is anything I can do.

Thanks very much and I'll certainly keep you in mind, but I believe Karlos thinks he can have it handled :)

New design is overloaded with useless text and graphs.
Old was simply and very comfortable.
But looks like you don't come back it, so I just hate you.
Why not just instead donate a few thousand dollars to the "Feed the Kitty". This way Wayne can hire someone to make a bunch of changes to your liking. ;)
No money to give? Well then be glad Wayne took the time at all to bother to continue keeping the site up! Geez!
-
Thank you Karlos and Wayne for trying to save as much data as possible.
Will you be able to reattach all the old and hilariously funny comments to the pics once they are reuploaded?
It would be a real shame if all those old witty comments were lost.
I did not browse the picture area much... but when I did, it was a laff riot.
Please please please resurrect the comments along with the pics.
p.s. The old cry emoticon was much better. I know Karlos will write a big speech about how the new cry is better so could we please have both a cry and a cry2 emoticon without having WWIII? Thanx.
-
@ChaosLord
I have no strong preference for either cry emoticon :p
I have a large list of emoticons I made for another site, many of which are similar to the ones here...
-
There there easy_john ... let me put your toys back in your pram
(http://www.babyminestore.com/images/sadbaby.jpg)
Now you behave yourself little man or there'll be no watching the teletubbies for you!
-
Can we yet upload new pictures in this new gallery ?
-
I uploaded one before I saw Karlos was doing the work. Seems to work fine, but doesn't like a title in caps only. SABC got changed to Sabc. Otherwise looks great.
I am happy that I broke the virginity of the new site's gallery :)
-
Ha, all of you just laugh at me.
But two things, that do this site reale useful is: information and people.
New site destroy it, some information lost (yes, i see forum archive, but I lost photo gallery _with_comments_) and lost very usable top menu. And looks like you lost some people - some don't like new design, and may be some too lazy for restoring password.
And what is realy boring me - stupid forum decoration. Forum overloaded, for just reading message i must wear trougth(?) many icons, bookmarks, tags, buttons, posting rules, forum jumps and many many empty space. Just look at this page, it contains a few comments, but i must scroll and scroll page many-many times to see all of it!
90% of page spase it is useless. And realy important things losted.
-
Dude it will get fixed, just chill and wait a bit. :hat:
-
Fixed what?
(But i hate this "standart forum, like all another stupid forum" decoration anyway.)
-
No money to give? Well then be glad Wayne took the time at all to bother to continue keeping the site up! Geez!
"Continue keeping" and "change all" is two different things!

I'm actually really liking the new lease of life from the update. Despite being mostly an AW user over time, it's great that amiga.org is moving forward. Let's follow :)

Yes they are, and you've managed to take the two phrases completely out of context. Congrats.
BTW are you going to start your own site since you're so unhappy here? ...Nah.

Guy's I don't think that guy is for real.
It's a troll account so let's not feed the troll :insane:
I've seen many like that. They don't even know how to mis-spell. (over do it with the bad English)
Like Wayne mentioned, I wonder if we will have our first troll banning on the new site.
Isn't all this activity a sign that the site is buzzing again?
He may be right that a couple of members may have (temporarily) left but I think more new people joined over the past week so no big loss.
-
@Wayne
are the old pics still sortable by user?
-
Yeah I always liked to come here and have a :bigcry:
The emoticon at the bottom of ur msg is the one I was talking about! I love that one!
This one:  looks like a Smurf that just got touched by Samarra. :D
-
@Easy John, give it time, I dont like it much either, but then again no one likes change do they?
I am giving it time and I am sure things will fall into place, its early days yet isnt it.
If you read WHY Wayne had to do this then m,aybe just maybe you would be a bit more tollerant on the issue.,
If not then I can see that Wayne will be frog marched down the streets to the stocks and flogged without compassion, and then put into the ducking stool, and then beaten with a copy of ZX Spectrum.
Just give him a break will you.................. he has done the best for now, look at it this way, at least there IS an Amiga.org still going on, I am going now as I am starting to get anoyed.............For what it is Amiga.org is not that bad, I am just thinking Easy John could YOU have done better?
We all await your reply with baited breath.
Ihn actual fact of doing a Edit on this, it isnt that bad realy, and yes it has mobile option to great for me phone.
In some way I do like it a bit more than the old version, but like i say give it time and dont be so ready to rush in.
Mike.

I think the site is coming along nicely. Its changed a lot in the past few days, for the better. Personally, its the content and news that i visit this site for not the looks.
Unfortunatly you can never please everyone, some people are just more tolerant than others and realise that in time the new site has the potential to be a lot better than the old one.
The admins have done a great job preserving as much as they have and deserve thanks rather than abuse. Instead of whinging about the change, why not make a suggestion on how to improve things?
I am sure that the community would have a better response to your post if you had a better attitude.

John,
There were probably a dozen or so threads where I explained WHY the change was necessary, then explained that we were working on the forums before anything else as they were the most important to save.
Everything else is safe and backed up.
We are just working in the background to bring you the old news, the old image gallery, links engine, and all that stuff back online. It will take us time to do so.
I *am* sorry that you needed something (an image) "RIGHT NOW" but there is nothing I can do about that and I apologize.
My only response is to remind you that Amiga.org is, in fact, provided to the Amiga Community as a free service provided by me, supported entirely by the VERY gracious donations of our members.
Neither you, nor I, nor anyone else has any right to expect, or to demand any given level of service here (or any other free web site) as this is our hobby just as it is yours.
Everything that you got used to having access to, be it news, images, links, etcetera is in the process of being restored. It just won't be using the old Xoops package that we had for several years.
That leaves three options for you sir.
1) Have a little patience and learn to enjoy all the new features here.
2) Start your own Amiga web site and spend the next 15 years collecting data, tools, and images.
3) Find and use another site of your liking.
I realize English is not your first language, so I'm trying not to take the "I just hate you" too seriously. I'm sorry if that comes across as joking on you but it's been a very stressful couple of weeks.
Sincerely, and with great regards.

I see you have miss the umteenth posting of why.
The version of Xoops the old site was running on used PHP4. PHP5 came out two years ago and PHP4 support has now been offically dropped by the PHP team. They are working of PHP6. Our host is now dropping php4 and will only be offering PHP5 only. The old version of Xoops we used will not run properly under PHP5 and is too old to update to the latest Xoops. We needed to move to someting modern that is PHP compatable. Wayne looked at various options. This one is the only one that allowed us to import all the old forum posts and used accounts from the old Xoops. Wayne is slowly building a new site around vBulletin. With help he was able to bring over PMs from the old datebase and may be able to import the old photo album. Worship Karlos. Be patient. Don't Bitch. Make polite constructive criticism. If there is a feature you would like to see, ask. If it is possible, it will be added to the to do list or explained that is already exists.
-

If you actually bothered to read the original threads on this very forum which explain the reasons for this, then you would realise that the changes were necessary to ensure the continuing existence of this site. Would you prefer for the site to remain as it used to be and then cease to exist entirely? Would that make it easier or harder to locate the information contained on this site?

Thanks for detailed description.
Yes, some words sound (mean) different strength in other languages. And i use very simple, to inform my idea right.
What i feel, when (in discussion with another man) i looking for information at amiga.org and find it completly different - is a great angry and sad.
And i'm still very sad, that site changes. Even if it does in good motives.
About free service - yes, you right, you do all this jog many years, but site - its only few Mb space at server, what is do this site unique - is people community. And I realy scare, that you can loose some of very interesting person with this changes...
2Ago
About php - i'm work as system administrator for last 9 years, so i know main thing - do not change anything, if it works.
If it sounds like "oure servers moved to php5", so i prefer to find another server/virtual machine with manualy installed latest php4, and running old cms in original environment, and don't change cms, and spent many days/weeks/(month?) to adapt it and migrate data. In this way we allways lost something..
2Motoroling
I cant read all forum threads. As you can see english isn't my native language, so I only read few hardware/software forums, marketplace, etc, to find sollution of my problem. And only this take to me too much time. No way, that i can rean any other duscussion/non technical threads..
-

Again sir, these are things we already addressed in other threads. PHP was discontinued 3 or 4 years ago and just now ended the support cycle. No support == no security updates. That means that NO web host worth having would support it.
Again though, I'm sorry that you feel this site is inadequate and invite you to contribute to make it better.
Wayne
-
2Wayne
You scare about security updates, but is this realy problem? is php4 realy have many security holes, that you can fix? anyway, it works many years, i think you know and override all holes over this time.
And so with hosting - if you cant find hosting with php4, you allways can find vhost/colocation with you own os/environment.
but you can not answer on this - you already do a choise.
Thanks for invite, but it's amost impossible to me, to explain design and feelings things in english.. And I see some changes is comming right now.
Hope you can do it right(better).
PS: Who, in hell, need to see join date, and number of posts in _every_ comment? :) If i think about bot - I'm anyway open it profile..
I mean it takes to much space, and comments to high separates one from another.
-

It is. Nuff said.

Anyway, what on earth is "rep power", and how have I managed to rack up so many? -edit- I guess they are "reply points"... Ok I get it now :D
-
Hope you can do it right(better).
Instead of complaining, what keeps you from making your own site ? With 9 years of experience at php it shouldn't be a problem for ya !?!
x303 :D :D :D

Take a look at AROS-EXEC.org. They are running a slighly new version of Xoops than we were running. They are getting hacked, currently are. Some trojan is getting inserted into their pages. Upgrading to a newer version of Xoops as they came out, they would be now be running the newest Xoops on PHP 5. Likely not haveing this issue as the security hole being used would not be there. What happens when there host ends PHP4 support? If they are running on their own colocated server, nothing. They can run whatever they want, but at the mercy of the security holes in PHP4 and the version of Xoops they are running. I don't know what their hosting situation is but I wonder what will happen.
As to PHP, sure the core does stay the same mostly. That doesn't help, unless that is all your software uses. I also moderate on phpwsforums.com, a support forum for phpWebsite CMS. I watched alot of people have issues with one version when hosts started switching to php5 only shortly after php5 was released. Version 9 of phpWebsite didn't completely stop working. There were three or four commands that were not php5 compatable. Which meant the sites worked but some core feature were broken or didn't work right. Plus you have all the third party addon modules. Some which didn't work at all. Some modules broke when the phpWebsite core was updated to be php5 compatable.
There was also a small issue whe mySQL 5 came out.
Oh, I still know sites out there that still run phpWebsite 8. So, yes some do keep moving to hosts that can support their site. Most of these out of fear of data lost which can happen in upgrading. phpWebsite has gone through two complete rewrites, so upgrading and data migration is not exactly one to one. These phpWebsite version 8 sites do run at a costs. Limited hosting and that version is very easy to hack.

No rush! Loving the new site, great work... a million times better than the old site (and that was difficult for me to say).

I'm loving the new site, too. The vibrancy of the community here is what's making me get more active with my Amigas.

Other than the single green dot indicating that you are "on the right path" or something... how can you tell how many rep points you have? I don't seem to see that listed anywhere.

So there dammit.
Hi,
Dont know if this has been suggested (didnt have time to read all the posts as i have to run) but it would be great to have a Gallery tab at the top of the screen where the other tabs are, you know, Home, Forums, User CP, FAQ, ect ect. Gallery would be very welcomed sitting along the others up there i think.

Rep stands for reputation.
It's supposed to be a measure of a user's reputation on the website.
Trolls will get neg-repped (disapproved by others) therefore getting a negative number.
Anyone that is helpful will get pos-repped (approved).
Rep power is a completely different beast from rep points. It's supposed to take into consideration your post count, rep points and other factors but I have still not completely worked out how it completely works.
-
I just gave you one.
Pwhooooor!
a positive reputation point, jeez people. minds out of the gutter, m'kay?
I think you're asking a bit much there tbh!
-
Well, I think this is my second post on this new site?
1) Yes, I don't like all the new changes either. But, in prioritized order:
A: Avatars have been moved.
B: Gallery will be resurrected.
2) So, I think we need to wait. And in time:
A: Topic titles will in time not be abrivated any more.
B: Extreanous air and space, dividers and lines will be stripped. "Moore google like".
C: News section on the front page again.
3) A PayPal donation/fund raiser to send Wane on a vaccation to the Carribien.
But for now, yes it's allowed to quietly hate or "out-of-the-box-love" the new site. But I believe that we should give it time. It'll all be good given some time. Allow the real cries of dismay and hate ring when the beta badge is gone. Meanwhile critize constructivly and make helpfull suggestions.
But posting on other sites that a.org is dead, or that you don't like the new look. And be quite here. Now thats a huge no-no. This is the place to say what needs changeing. And do it nicely. Remember that this is a free service to us. The community.

I am with Easy John here, the site has looked alot better in the past.
the stuff i like the least is the awfull standard stuff (in today's forums):
View Public Profile
Send a private message to adz
Visit adz's homepage!
Find More Posts by adz
Add adz to Your Contacts
and so on, yes its screen filler and useless, atleast for normal use, theese things should be when you go and look on the user's account.
And yes, i dislike how its really annoying to use with Ibrowse (this site) but then again , i have OWB so i will use that for now.
Can we atleast get back the orginal design ..i mean, top banner logo etc?
other than that, i like the site and the info on it as always and ofcourse the people, so here is a hint, keep it up guys and make the site awesome again.
PPS: i didnt like the last big change on amiga.org either but after a while the site was frequently updating to look better and more functionality/useage so i know you guys can do it for third time in a row :)
EDIT: i just noticed that all that:

Can we atleast get back the orginal design ..i mean, top banner logo etc?
That is an excellent idea Lempkee.

Hi,
Dont know if this has been suggested (didnt have time to read all the posts as i have to run) but it would be great to have a Gallery tab at the top of the screen where the other tabs are, you know, Home, Forums, User CP, FAQ, ect ect. Gallery would be very welcomed sitting along the others up there i think.
See the to do list. The gallery isn't finished yet, hence no link. Rest assured, it'll get there pretty soon.

Any other good ideas go there please.

No. As I've explained many, many, many times now, I (in no particular order)
1) Don't have the original graphics to work with, and, no, you can't just "put what was up there back" because each menu choice is now different
2) This is a different package. It works differently and is therefore not as easy to make look as horrible as I consider that 8 year old design. There is a reason that people rip out old wall paper ya know.. :)
3) I personally got sick of looking at the old design and wanted something newer and fresher. Granted, the header needs work, but if you'll check, you'll see it's on the to do list.

Please send all future good ideas there.. :)
PPS: i didnt like the last big change on amiga.org either but after a while the site was frequently updating to look better and more functionality/useage so i know you guys can do it for third time in a row :)
Yep. Last time, Amiga.org was the first and only Amiga site to use Xoops. You guys HATED it (I wish I still had the messages from back then). After you guys got used to it, EVERY successor site (AW, then Amigans, then whoever was in between that) ran out and got their own free Xoops package and you guys (and the online community) fell into complacency.
Now 8 years later (10 since we started using Xoops), it's time for the next dramatic "what's next" moment and sure enough, give it six months and give us time to get the news/images/links back online, and you won't even remember "what was"..
You don't remember the yellow Amiga.org days do you???
See?? :)
EDIT: i just noticed that all that:

Unfortunately that's an OWB and/or IB issue. I'm sure if you asked the author, he could probably fix it on that end much easier than I could break the code to work with the broken browser.

Other than the single green dot indicating that you are "on the right path" or something... how can you tell how many rep points you have? I don't seem to see that listed anywhere.
look in your CP
next to the list of recent reps ("Latest Reputation Received") is the current number
-
Yup, and as a habitual lurker I have to say I actually quite like the new layout so far, it is missing some functionality yet that was in the old site (or atleast it is not linked to at the front of the front page anymore) but major site upgrades can be that kind of pain.

Hmmm... I can't see a list of recent reps in my CP, but then again, maybe I need reps to be able to see them?
-
Well, for a little while there I was struggling to like the new format, but now that the avatars have moved over to the left, I'm pretty happy now! Well done Wayne and all the other guys helping out with this, I run a couple of bulletin boards (nothing at all Amiga-related) and I know how much work is involved. When it's finished, I'm sure people will settle down and you'll be able to relax and enjoy your work :-)

You have your very own stalker now :D

@Wayne
Yeah.. this all feels like a deja vu from last upgrades and major changes. There is always someone who will get upset, but a month or two later it is all forgotten about.

And about time too :D

I admit I am not a huge fan of the new makeover, but i also know it is still a work in progress. One thing i could do without is the Calendar on the right side of the screen. But up th good hard work guys. Oh and what happened to my Avatar pic:)

You can collapse blocks that you don't want visible.
See here: http://www.amiga.org/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_collapsing

Thanks... Just FYI, We will more than likely be upgrading the front page (vBAdvanced) to 3.2.0 this weekend at some point which will include a "customize this page" option, allowing anyone to drag and drop (or add/delete) the windows any way they want them.

The Babblefish is weak in this one.
While there are some valid points, the site is still a work in progress, and no ammount of whine will ever get the old site back.
The times are changing. The classic Amigas are no longer able to keep up, and people need to face it.
Personally, I like the new emphasis on the forum parts. The forums are, and have always been the most important part of AO, and being able to view posts in a larger format is excellent.

Yeah, but about 1/2 of the people are complaining about too much "white space".. :)
Like the vote I did earlier on the logo font, every change is a no-win scenario when you get this many people who're so attached to the way things were.
.. but I do appreciate your support.
-
Well, we just have to fill the white space with walls of text, then! ^^
The old design has served well, but was seven years since the last major re-design.
The way I see it, AO is an Internet forum aimed at Amiga enthusiasts, and not a forum for Amiga browsers.
The new forum software is excellent for that purpose, and as long as someone doesn't port the old Xoops software to Php5, then they have to live with it.

That sounds brilliant :D. At least nobody can complain about layout again when you are able to customise it to your own liking.

I like the amount of white space you have now. It breaks up the page and makes things readable. Just my $0.02 worth...

Ooooh. That sounds nice. Any ETA on when we're getting news back? You know I'm not nit-picking, Wayne. I'm just asking. :D

There'll always be one who complains lol
I don't care what the site looks like personally ... as long as it works is just fine with me :)
