Title: What do I need to run Morphos?
Post by: pappavis on September 16, 2013, 10:11:50 PM
I've been absent from Amiga >=11 years. I want to get back into Amiga. What do I need?

For many years i was active on an Amiga A500 & upgraded my AmigaA1200.
In 2005 sold it all.

Question;
1. What do i need (hardware)?
2. Which software?

What I DONT want;
* not emulate old 68k-series.
 * not buying any ole'  Amiga hardware

My assumptions;
 * MorphOS os the current 'AmigaOS' with same look & feel.
 * Morphos runs out of the box on a Apple PowerPC like MacMini G4..?

TIA!

If You want MorphOS Your question was already answered, otherwise for AmigaOS look here http://www.amigaos.net/content/72/supported-hardware.

68k apps can be emulated on both systems if You want to.

Have fun!

He asked about MorphOS not OS4.

A PowerMac G4 will cost about €40 or less and MorphOS is free to try out. Cheapest OS4 machine will be ten times that price at least plus €150 to try OS4 as there is no demo version.

@pappavis

You might find this excellent thread by takemehomegrandma very useful to find out what Mac hardware to use with MorphOS

Just to play devil's advocate, he also stated that he's been away from the Amiga scene for 11 years.  Given the way the question was phrased, he might never have heard of OS4.  Although MorphOS does seem to be the less expensive way to achieve a NG "Amiga".  ;)

In either case, welcome back!  :)

I'll bite. ;)

Would it not be a tad strange for someone away from the scene that long to have heard of MorphOS but not OS4?

Could be it was just the first thing that came up on a Google search?  Dunno, guess we'll have to wait for OP to answer the mystery!  ;)

Actually I heard of MorphOS first, but that was back in 2003... I don't even recall, was there such a thing as OS4 at the time?  :p

Edit:  Haha, look what I found in an old thread.  On the Internet nothing ever dies.  ;)  http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44903

There's also AROS, which also runs on standard pc hardware (as well as 680x0, ppc, arm, x86-64), and is free (MOS licensse is roughly 100 euro, give or take a little depending on which hardware you run it on. License is charged per machine, although a transfer is sometimes possible if you can prove youre transferring to a different machine for a reason). You can of course try MOS for free (for 1/2 hour, then system is slowed down drastically) if you have hardware that's supported.

All 3 options (MOS, OS4, AROS) have their pros and cons. The differences between all 3 are smaller than most people here will try to convince you of.
Also, I appologize in advance for the almost inevitable reflux action most people here will demonstrate when they get the smell of a potential new user of their chosen amiga clone system.

Welcome back.
Ambient, MorphOS' interface, may surprise you as it actually looks modern.
But the controls are pure AmigaOS.

And we've got a really nice browser bundled with the OS.

Give MorphOS a spin and see what you think.
Except for the minimal cost of the hardware, trying it is free.

I came back to "Amiga" this weekend after 13 years away, and after a lot of research I went the way of MorphOS due to cost and support.
After a lot of digging I found that I needed 64Mb video RAM, which if you're getting a Mac Mini it HAS to be the 1.5Ghz one, which was silently upgraded by Apple from the 1.42Ghz ones, so the box and everything about it says 1.42Ghz, until you go into "About my Mac" in OSX.

Another pitfall, when people put them on eBay, it forces them to put in the model number and the majority eBay gets the automated description wrong and buts that it has 64Mb video RAM. I spent 2 weeks constantly checking eBay and emailing the users and asking them to check in "About my Mac", any that came back with 1.5Ghz I put a bid on, early last week I got one for £110 delivered.
I chose Mac Mini due to the low noise level and power consumption over the big Power Mac towers as it sits in the lounge at home. You can get a PowerMac G4 for £50 or under

No. 64 MB Video RAM are better, but not mandatory for MorphOS.

What a blast from the past! :)

You are right that OS4 didn't exist in 2003, it had been "two more weeks" away for at least two years at that point. ;)
