Title: Just picked up a eMac 1.25Ghz this morning.
Post by: redrumloa on June 12, 2010, 05:48:13 PM
I went to the local flea market this morning, Thunderbird Swap Shop, which claims to be the biggest in the world. After walking in the brutal Florida sun for about 90 minutes, I found a 1.25Ghz eMac and bought it. I plan on installing MorphOS 2.5 this afternoon to give it a spin. I haven't used MorphOS since v1.4, so I am curious to how it has progressed.

It remains to be seen if I keep this eMac and register MorphOS 2.5. I am more interested in a G4 Power Mac, so I may wait for that support to come to register. For now, it will be great to test drive MOS 2.5 demo version.

-edit-
That means the Televideo TS-803H gets taken off the computer desk :-/ Man, I need to rework this workshop for more desktop space...

@Redrumloa

What price did you pay for it? I have a 700MHz (?) E-Mac in the closet that hasn't been used in years. I should give it a try as well.

I paid $40 for it. The 700Mhz model probably won't work, it has a diferent chipset. Only 1.25Ghz is officially supported, though I'd guess a 1Ghz model may work.

BTW, installation wen smoth and fast. I am posting this from MorphOS 2.5 :-)

I just got it up and running, installation was smooth with no real hitches. I did have a problem with a stanrd PC keyboard, I couldn't get the CD drive to eject. I borrowed the wife's Apple keyboard and no problem. This isn't a MorphOS problem, but just a niggle of Mac hardware.

I will play with this some more and give some impressions later. So far it is freaking flying! Feels good, especially te price!!!

You can eject a CD in MorphOS from the right-click context menu, and I think there's a Screenbar module and shell command to do it as well.

Hope you continue to have lots of fun :)

Installation couldn't have been much easier once I hooked up an Apple keyboard. The MorphOS install is very straight forward and idiot proof. Installation only took a few minutes and I was up and running. Ambient Desktop desktop is very clean and easy to navigate. The icons are pretty. The default screen mode was a bit hard on the eyes, so a trip into MorphOS preferences were in order. It has been quite a while since I played with monitor preference in MorphOS or any other modern Amiga-like OS. The monitor preferences screen is much like I remember Picasso96. With 1024x768 24bit, the picture is rock solid. I will have to play with it a bit more to set up other screen modes.

So far I have played with OWB, the built in apps and tried out Payback. OWB looks very nice and is fast. I look forward to playing with this some more and getting comfortable with MOS again. So far I am down a whopping $40 to be able to play with MorphOS on a 1.25Ghz system with 1GB RAM, 500MB hard drive and Radeon 9200. I will have a decision to make whether to register and use this system or wait for G4 Power Mac support. Initial impression is this computer has enough balls, I may register on this.

Registration may get a bit more attractive considering the currently lowered price of 111 EUR and the rather fair EUR/US $ exchange rate (which probably will persist on the current level for quite a while).

Congrats on getting your 1.25GHz G4 eMac for only $40 Red, that is a nice price for a "Next Gen" Amiga system.  (now before anyone argues that it is not an "Amiga" system, please don't waste your time by polluting this thread with that off topic nonsense.  I am not interested in such silly arguments that cannot be won, one way or another and are a complete waste of time.  If that is how you feel, fine.  I concede that you have the right to think in your head that any MorphOS system is not an "Amiga" system, just because it does not have the official name Amiga attached to it, but I also have the right to disagree with your opinion.  End of argument in my book and I am not interested in any reasons, rationality, further discussion, etc. of that topic)

Red, enjoy your re-exploration of MorphOS with version 2.5 and please make an effort to get your MorphOS2.5 eMac into good hands later if you decide to sell it and move up to the G4 PowerMac, once the G4 PowerMac is supported by the MorphOS Dev Team.

I think I'll go fire up my 1.5GHz G4 Mac Mini and have some fun.

That might be a good gamble, waiting for the exchange rate to become more advantageous, but it might also back-fire if the MorphOS Dev. Team decides to discontinue the lower price of a MorphOS license key and returns to the 150 euro price.

Not that it makes any difference to me, but I would encourage everyone that is thinking of getting a MorphOS license key to get it sooner rather than later for many reasons.  (I have no inside knowledge and no contact directly with any of the MorphOS Development Team)

David, MorphOS is the most viable NG Amiga out there. A Mini G4 can be had for a very low price and MorphOS outperforms OS 4.1 which has very little hardware availability.

I hope that Morph OS stays at the cheaper price, as i believe they will sell a lot more license keys, seeing that you can now pay around $50 (thats what i recently paid for my Emac) for the hardware to run it. Funny enough though, about 4 hours after i won the auction for my emac, i received this following message.

"i am very sorry the unit that you purchased was dropped and i have smashed it.

I apologize for this but there is nothing i am able to do

i understand if you are unhappy but it was an accident

very sorry"

Yeah right it got smashed. I replied that i dont care that the emac was smashed as i wanted it for some internal boards and want to pick it up asap. I am yet to hear from the seller.

I suppose I'll be hitting up Ebay this Thursday night and making my self a purchase.

Can anyone give me one good reason not to? Emulation is supposed to still fly on a mere 1.2Ghz, later era PPC games appear to be working, the damn things are going for under $100 and MorphOS is available for $50 atm. I think Amiga users would have to be either very bull headed, or insane to pass this up right now. Especially now that I know the license can be transferred to another unit should the eMac die.

Actually it is on sale for 111.11EUR (approximately $135 in USD). 8 months ago it would have cost $225, when not on sale and with a worse exchange rate.

The problem with that is if he didn't really drop it, he may drop it intentionally if forced to ship it  But seriously, who knows. I have had bad things happen to me on occasion and had buyers simply refusing to believe the explanation.

If you are in the USA, eMacs are dirt cheap buy-it-now on eBay. Shipping will at least double the cost, these are very heavy suckers. I found out the hard way how heavy they are when I bought this one at the flea market and had to carry it 1/4 mile back to my car in the blazing sun. Even still, I see them available for about $100 including shipping on eBay.

I am using a pc keyboard with a mac right now, so as long as the keyboard is usb it should work. The only difference is the keybindings are different. For instance instead of pressing control-c to copy text, you press windows key-c. Atleast that's how it is in OSX. This (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/11583) should help.

Good call Red. Right now, the 1.25 Mhz eMac is the cheapest system that will run MorphOS. Currently, there are a few on Ebay and one starts at under $15 (of course shipping makes that quite a bit higher).
I'm looking forward to Powermac support too, but rumor has it that the development team may only support the MDD models.
Personally, I'm hoping they'll support the Quicksilver Powermac as well since there are more third party CPU upgrades for that model.

Well I just won a 1.25ghz emac on ebay for £8.50

So £120 for a morphOS machine seems a serious bargain, damm, cheaper than my IMICA.

I will report back soon.

By the way, there are loads left.

Now that's what they call "sweat equity" in the eMac investment!  Seriously, that was a good deal.  I looked on Craigslist here and couldn't find a 1.25 model that was even close...one wanted $200!

I have a Snowball iMac that I'd like to use but I doubt it would be supported.  My twin G5 also seems to be headed toward the heap since Apple appears near to dropping support.

Perhaps, eventually, they' move up to the G5...

There are currently two 1.25 Ghz eMacs listed on the ebay USA website. The sellers ask for 100 USD for each machine and approximately 25 USD for shipping (within the US). With regard to the total cost, that is quite close to the numbers redrumloa mentioned.

Things happen.  I sold a Sega CD unit on eBay and decided to have one last play while I waiting for payment to arrive (pre-PayPal).  When setting it up I accidentally plugged in the wrong power adapter which instantly fried it!  :madashell:  I was out ~$90 + eBay fees + I reimbursed the guy for the money order fee.  :(

@ techie

MorphOS does not support eMac wi-fi modules. If you rely on a wi-fi network, you are best advised to buy a so-called wi-fi bridge, which can be connected to your eMac's ethernet port. The configuration of your wi-fif bridge is usually done via web browser (OWB). Some smaller wi-fi bridges do not require a cable and can be plugged right into an ethernet connector even.

Where?

I don't recommend this, but you can probably find a used Efika with a paid MorphOS license key for around $80 to $120 with a case, pico-PSU & power brick, plus the needed 90 degree PCI to AGP adapter and a video card (probably a Radeon 9250 w/128mb VRAM).  You take the Efika mobo out of the case, sell the case, pico-PSU & power brick, and the video card with the 90 degree PCI to AGP adapter for as much as you can get for them and then electrically fry the Efika mobo and send it in to the MorphOS Dev. Team to prove that it no longer works and ask them to transfer your license for that Efika mobo to another MorphOS capable computer system of your choice when you find and buy one.

That is one possible way to get a MorphOS license for around $50.
Not sure if that is funny or sad?

Yes sometimes things really do happen after a sale, but the guy who was selling the emac is full of it. The item was pickup only, which was fine as i am 40 mins away from the sellers location. The auction ended late Saturday afternoon. 2 emacs were listed at $50 starting bid. I was the only bidder on the emac i won. The other emac had no bids on it, so it did not sell. A few hours after the auction i received the bogus message saying it was smashed. I then replied back saying that it was ok as i wanted it for some internal parts. I then messaged him and said if you really feel bad about smashing the emac, offer me the one you had on ebay that did not sell. I then sent a 3rd message asking for his details as i want to come and pick up the smashed emac asap.

In response to my first message the seller wrote "sorry again about this news
I was a bit injured when the accident occured and as a result the broken emac was dumped with the hard rubbish."

In response to my second message the seller wrote" again i apologize but that was sold to another guy after the auction was finished and before i had the mishap"

And in response to my 3rd message. the seller wrote" quicksilver unfortunately there will be no collection as the broken item was destroyed and then taken to the tip"

This all happened late on a Saturday afternoon. Why would you suddenly want to take a computer that you supposedly dropped, which caused you injury, to the tip late on a Saturday afternoon when the tip would have most likely been closed.

BTW i am in Australia so $50AU for this emac is equivalent to someone buying one for about $43 in the US.

Happens alot on ebay. The guy just probably wasn't happy that it went so cheap. The guy probably will relist the item till he gets what he wants for it. I've had something like that happen to me a few times...

Should have set a reserve he was happy with.

I'm up to 27.00$ in ebay sales towards my own emac. I suppose I will start looking again when I hit 200$ There are a few really nice ones with 1 gig of ram,dvd-rw, and 240 gig hard drives occasionally. I'd like one maxed if possible so I don't ever need to mess with it for upgrades... Just plug and play I suppose.

the people who have advertised an efika  with MorphOS key want more like $200+ ,at least the several would-be sellers I contacted. They apparently got their price from someone else and I don't think $200 for a registered efika system is out of line.

I have just finished installing MorpOS 2.5   on my Mac Mini while keeping the MacOSX Tiger, and leaving an extra space (maybe Ubuntu triple boot?).
Have to  resolve DSL connection problem since my PC is using the USB port on a Netopia box and there is no Mac driver for DSL-USB.

Why anyone would pay that price for an efika is beyond me, and that regged MorphOS is pretty useless since it is locked to the efika. I suppose the best use of such a system is to chop it up in bits and send the MorphOS team as proof so you can get a free re-registration for a mini.

Man you are  such a positive ,upbeat person it must be a joy to be around you.

If for $200 one gets a 400 mhz PPC computer with 128 meg RAM , a 60gb hard drive with  a registered copy of MorphOS ,power supply, and nice case ,that seems much better than paying $500plus for an old accelerator card and having to pay another $150 for AOS 4 ;especially since both evidently need tweaking for older games and apps anyway.

Talk of deliberately destroying a working system  to use the MorphOS team licensing policy in a way it was not meant to be used just reminds one of the piracy issues that hurt Amiga in the past.Sure,I would prefer MorphOS be free but that is not the reality.

If everybody only look for a way to cheat then why play the game?

It's YOUR fault!Posting  all those neat pictures.

Since you  obviously had so much fun with eMac ,I felt like one must be added to the collection here.

After seeing several eMacs for various  $100-200,finally spotted a  1.25GHz model for $150 or best offer. The seller accepted $50 ,threw in a USB CD drive and carried it to my car !!! He was just happy to get rid of it.(Oh yes,the genuine Apple keyboard and mouse were included.)

I wonder if the eMac can dual -boot Mac OS and MorphOS ? Seems a shame to lose a nicely working OS X 10.3.9 installation.

Sure. http://dreamolers.binaryriot.org/dualboot.pdf instructions should work for eMac as well.
