CD32 won't start
« on: March 24, 2023, 10:16:57 PM »
Hey all,
so, i reserrected my CD32 to front and centre livingroom position with a new TF360 (Thanks SupaDupa), and for about a day or 3 life was great.

i've heatsinked the CPLD's and the 060, got a 60mm fan on the top to cool it all pulling cool air in through the top vents. Quake1, Quake2, demos, you name it. it ate it. even clocked up to 66.7Mhz, and AGA showing RTG a good lick of speed. great times.

now. i don't know if i've cooked the old original PSU. but i've tested with a molex-4pinDIN power adapter on a PC power supply, and it's the same. i'm thinking a cap has gone wonky in the CD32 itself.
on poweron, the power LED stays dim for ages. eventually, it might go bright, and some time after, it might display the CD32 rom scrolling colours screen. but it'll then kill the screen after a few minutes. power light stays bright if it has "woken up". power off and back on again repeats the cycle.

any ideas? or shall i send her off for a re-cap anyway - whats the worst that could happen?

thanks for looking

Oh sure thing :)

no piccys of the actual setup, so just the CD32 accelerators.
i'm prepping the CD32 ready to send off for re-cap. I think my A4k needs some re-cap love too as at times she can't seem to finish a bench mark run, other times, she'll run for hours...

Cd32@66Mhz will get about 15fps on "timedemo demo2" on Quake1 at 320x240@8Bit - on AGA! compare that to 13fps on RTG via my CV64-3D/060@50Mhz equipped A4k. running the radeon 9250 via mediator gets me about 0.1fps extra.
quake2, basicly cut the numbers in half for both the CD32 and A4k.
which puzzles me, as i figured the C2P routines would cripple the CD32, unless it's just doing a straight ram-to-ram copy blit. or using Akiko. i dunno. but the TF360 is a blazing piece of kit. i can but wonder "if only" the cd32 had that kind of firepower from day one what sort of console landscape we'd be looking at *laughing*

You haven't mentioned if it boots fine without Accelerator connected. Could also be a connection issue.
I have no end of wierd problems with my TF card. Have to fiddle with riser until it works fine.

Sorry yes good point, but no. the CD32 doesn't want to play with or without accelerator, using the original PSU or a molex to 4pin DIN connected to a PC power supply. I get the same results no matter what.

dim power light, and nothing on screen for ages... maybe, just maybe, seemingly as if the system has hit a temperate sweet spot, the light will go bright, and maybe the rom screen will kick in, only to go black after a short while. or just not at all. i know that a "cold start" or a "cool start" won't work from the get go. a slightly warm system may have some chance to get to a bright power light, and maybe a rom boot. then it seems to go through the sweet spot and black screen. then on reset, we're back to the permanent dim light again.

i don't want to try anymore incase i'm hurting something irreplaceable, so she's booked in for a re-cappin', a new laser, and a clean up. lets see what that does.
