AROS port for 68k ?

I really can't understand the thoughts of people that created that bounty.
What is the meaning of porting AROS -which is basicaly x86 ,amiga replacement compatible at api with os 3.1,when amiga os 3.x already runs on 68k?
Unless people thing that someone with a linux distribution running maybe mac 68k or atari 68k wants to run aros.I really thing that this is "stupid".Why not further support AFA os ?Or why not port other things to aros?It simply does not make any sense to me!

Lots of reasons, but it makes sense to run UAE without the need for copyrighted material.

OS 3.x leaves a lot to be desired in many areas these days...
If AROS was entirely ported to 68k, Classic Amigas would have a chance to stand the test of time. OS 3.x as time passes by and new standarts arrive will eventually become totally outdated unless we can modify it just a bit.

I'm with Bloodline on this one, although I want it as much for my MiniMig as for UAE.  The OS is the choke point for retro Amiga use and I would like to see that choke point removed.

Heck, waiting for someone to port AROS to 68k is my primary purpose for following AROS.  AROS on 68k, could allow for massive legal, free retro gaming both through emulation as well as it's own open hardware platform.  I think this would attract developers not just to the 68k port, but to AROS in general.

I have to agree with nikodr. It is such a waste of time IMO. Porting an OS that is "supposed" to point at the future, on an architecture that is destined to disappear eventually. If the bounty was targeting the SAM and other OS4 based architecture (Pegasos, EFIKA, etc.) then I would understand.

AROS already runs on the SAM and the Pegasos...

Yup, would be a wonderful thing to run UAE without any IP from AI.

i would even say running complete aros not just afa on68k might be feeling some gap, but afa leads the way as for now.

I could understand only one:to create binary compatibility between aros and old amiga applications without the need for uae.But we would not need an 68040/60 to run for applications designed to run on 1,5 gigaherz!.It would crawl. There is no sense to run applications that a 68040/68060 cannot execute at normal speed through the port of aros.

Now porting it to 68k what are the advantages? We are talking about a replacement operating system that has compatibility at api level.

There is already the afa os that replaces various things. No sense emulating a replaceable operating system that is the same as the host os api!

It's a waste of resources i think.
The best step for me would be to port applications at aros.

Create a good development package that could help coders bring anything we want to aros.

Os 3.1 is indeed outdated.Besides what speed are we expecting doing a full aros 68k build?Since aros is x86 based, isnt it like reenventing the wheel again here?Thing of it that is aros!A new operating system that has os 3.x as father.

Now it has to evolve. It won't evolve if we port it back to 68k.Like windows xp would not evolve if there was a version that could run at a 386dx 40mhz.
Like windows evolved from dos and windows 3.1 to windows 7.At some point you sacrifice the old for the new benefits, but keeping the benefits of the past if you want. That's the treasure of the 3.x api that allows us to bring applications at aros.

I think there is no sense other than nostalgia to port aros to 68k.Aros makes you remember what amiga was like,it has the feel of amiga but we have to move on.

What would happen if i had aros for my 68040 ?Owb really crawls on my machine. If i run an emulated aros version of owb would that make it faster?

No don't get me wrong.I love aros and i think it has potential. It just seems to me that a 68k port is not really something that would help aros spread.

Yes I know, but development for those ports has somewhat stopped. It would have made sense to target some of those ports with the bounty used for 68K Amigas.

I believe the Natami team is interested in a 68k port of AROS.

Natami, Minimig, uae without the need for copyrighted material, the option to have an updated OS for classic users, there's lots of reasons. One of the most important from an x86 AROS users perspective is that its very useful (nigh on a necessity) for x86 aros uae intergration.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

AROS has been a multi-CPU thing from the start; I think in the beginning it was even compiled on HP-UX machines.

Trust me...                                              I know what I\'m doing

AROS devs do what they do as a hobby. The only thing that is wasted is the developer enjoying himself with pointless things.
