WinUAE, XP and FFS formatted Amiga HDDs
« on: May 09, 2004, 10:22:58 PM »
Does anyone know if WinUAE can detect an Amiga FFS formatted hard drive if it's connected to a PC running XP?

I'm looking for a quick and dirty way of transferring files from my dead A1200(T) to my WinUAE system.

Any assistance would be appreciated....

Yes it is.

Though, once connected you may want to make a drawer on the  `real` PC HD and copy all the amiga files over to that....

Simple...

So I just connect the Amiga's drive, turn on the PC and run WinUAE.

I'll then be able to transfer the files over?

Is it really that simple?

Yea,
are you backing up real amiga files?

Don`t try to write onto the amiga HD (it`ll probably work though!) with the pc...

Good luck.

Hmm,

I've hooked up the drive from my Amiga as a slave to the PC's CD Rom.

Yep, I'm backing up real Amiga files...

But UAE doesn't "see" the Amiga's HDD, or indeed my CD ROM now.  Any ides????

Duh!!!  According to the Amiga In a Box site I need WinUAE version 0.8.23....

I'm on 0.8.22.

RTFM PMC....

Yu should use Harddrives, Addharddrives and if it's a harddrive and it is for the title of this discussion, you need to check read&write option, as well.

But very first step might be the XP part. You should make sure that XP recognizes your drive. You can solve this through add hardware wizard, but never and ever format it on XP, otwerwise you will lose your data.

Take it easy..not a big deal..

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!! STOP!!! :-x

Don't EVER make XP initiate or install the disk, for that causes XP to partition the disk, and maybe wiping out the RDB in the process. All you have to do is make sure the harddrive is recognized in the bios, and then make sure XP does not touch the harddrive at all on startup. Then it's just a matter of letting WinUAE know which harddrive to use. If you let XP initiate/install the drive, it has then written a RDB to the drive so WinUAE cannot use it, (and neither can your dead A1200T or any other Amiga)

Phew!

Thanks for the warning....  Luckily I didn't change any BIOS settings, I just plugged in, turned on the PC and downloaded WinUAE 0.8.24 last night and found the option to select a hard drive...

And it worked a treat!  :-)

I've managed to copy all my files etc from the Amiga's HDD to my PC without any problems.  I might even reformat the ex-Amiga HDD and use that as a dedicated UAE partition.

Oh, sorry if you misunderstood, but the BIOS-settings aren't dangerous at all. It's the add-hardware-wizard in XP that asks to install the drive, that wants to erase that precious RDB. Just press cancel when it prompts and asks if you want to add the drive to the system.
