My dream would be a brand new A1200 / A500 type desktop all in one with a classic 68900 or something with 2Ghz Dual core . It will be able to take standard DDR2/3 pc ram and would support 8Mb Chip and up to 1Gb fast ram .

Have HDMI and component out .
Have built in Wifi
Have built in LAN
Built in USB 2.0
Have SD/MMC card slots
Built in DVD drive
64 Bit sound (but still compatible with Paula)
New Kickstart (4.0??)

Etc.. etc...

It must also retain the floppy drive :-) and be fully compatible with the classic Amigas , yet also be compatible with OS4 and housed in a typical yet modern Amiga all in one case .

Why on earth would you want 1 Gig of Fast Ram in an Amiga??

I would love to see and updated 1200 MB released but HDMI wouldn't be high on my list

The 1200 was a little under-spec'd when released so I would like to see something closer to what it 'should' have been with a few minor updates, for example:

1) VGA output (with some new VGA screen modes)
2) 8MB [fast] chipram
3) Higher motherboard chipspeed
4) Faster blitter & Copper (eg AGA done properly)
5) 030 + FPU
6) Some [fast] fastram would be nice!

And the closest thing I've seen so far to this (apart from WinUAE!) is the FPG ARCADE, although CloneA may also fit the bill....who knows.

Obviously if it wasn't done as a simple drop-in replacement of the existing MB, then it would also be good to get easy access to a DVD drive, some USB ports and some card reader slots in a Mini-ITX or similar case.

The further you get away for the originally chipset the less 'Amiga' like it becomes so what I've listed above builds on the original 1200 ideas instead

It's not as expensive as it once was.  you can buy an active vga + audio to hdmi converter for around $40 at monoprice.com.  Pointless but not as expensive as it once was.  BTW it's useless without a scandoubler.

The FPGAArcade replay board has DVI out, and I am using it with a DVI to HDMI cable into a TV. Early days, but it will give crisp pixel accurate output at standard PAL/NTSC resolution, and there is no reason the resolution cannot be scaled up.

If you forget about AUDIO and HDCP stuff then DVI and HDMI are compatible - you just need a cable with the right ends on. The advantage of using HDMI is it works at "TV" frequencies (50Hz) whereas most DVI input monitors do not and need a scan doubler.

Well I have to totally agree with that statement especially since that is exactly what I did. And even though I've only had my Sam for a few days I have to tell you that it is fast and very responsive with a modern feel. I mean think about it, Amiga OS running on a new 800mhz mother board with 2gig of ram. It's like a dream come true, for me anyway.

That would be a great snap on! But, component video has never worked for me, I dunno just looks like crap. I could always get s-video to work great with DVDs / TVs and was frustrated why RGB component video just made mud? Supposed to better.

AGA struggles with 640x256 @ 256 colours (8bit colour resolution),

Total Chaos AGA cruises fast and smooth in 640x512 @256 colors all day long for 10 years, no problemo amigo.

HDMI only says what the maximum resolutions are, not minimum. and there are some adapters that have 640x480.
anyway it should be easy for someone with PC and HDMI to test and see if 320x256 works.

I think the problem would be finding displays that support these resolution. TV's with HDMI I've seen won't actually accept 480i/576i over HDMI (they'll take 480p/576p just fine though).

Even stranger, some resolutions are only available in certain 'modes', even though they use the very same plug and connector... Take my TV for example: it will happily display 1280x720 and 1024x768 (as well as higher and lower resolutions). However... If the input of the TV is set to HD it won't display 1024x768 and if it's set to PC it won't display 1280x720.

One wonders why they went to the bother of blocking some resolutions in some modes, even though the TV itself can actually display it (like the 576i thing - works fine over scart and component, but won't display over HDMI at all - even though the signal is there and the TV can display it!). It's almost as if the designers are going out of their way to cause frustration and trouble for those who wish something not-everyday.

I suppose there will be displays that do work with resolutions below 480p, but your milage may vary.
