Amiga 600 vs. 1200?
« on: June 08, 2005, 04:59:04 AM »
Hi All,
I have the option to buy an almost brand new A600HD, but I have heard that it has incompatibility issues, is that true?

Should I wait for a better deal on Amiga 1200 instead? What are the differences between A600HD and A1200?

Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards,
CodeHunter

The A600 is ECS with no keyboard keypad and the A1200 is AGA.

The A600 has an 8mhz 68000 whilst the 1200 has a faster 14mhz 68020 and is more easily expandable.  The 1200 also has a full size keyboard as opposed the the 600 missing the numeric keypad on the right side.

1 x A2000 030@25Mhz
1 x A2000, 2 x A600
2 x A500

A600 is good for gaming, and simple apps. Don't expect a power horse. The 1200 on the other hand is HIGHLY upgradable, faster, more colors, more compatability (with AGA software), sharper gfx, etc.

I wouldn't mind having another 600 myself though. :)

Hi,I used to own a 600 in nineties and had great fun using it.But recently bought my A1200 with HD and I've found it to be a hell of a lot better.Loads and runs programmes much faster with plenty of upgrades possible. :-D

A600 = 68000@7Mhz, 1Mb chipmem, ECS Graphics, Kickstart2.05, Missing keypad, PCMCIA port, Only expansion slot for extra 1Mb chipmemory... other uppgrades are reversesockled onto chips on the motherboard.

A1200 = 68020@14Mhz, 2Mb chipmem, AGA Graphics, Kickstart3.0/3.1, Full keyboard, PCMCIA port (missing reset), Clockport expansion and CPUslot expansion with possibility for PPC & PCI/Zorro bussboards... other uppgrades are reversesockled onto chips on the motherboard.

It doesn't take a genious to realise that the A1200 is a wastly better machine than the A600. That said I wouldn't want to let go of my A600 as it's such a cute little machine. Also with the right uppgrades it's a great machine for putting in a backpack to take with you on a party... just as long as you got something more powerfull at home first.

So get an A1200 first... and if you then need a lighter and smaller travel partner then get the A600 later on also.

If you do go 1200 and pass up the A600, then hook me up man, I'll buy it as long as the price is within reason. I could use a dedicated Worms machine. :)

It depends on what you are going to use it for. The a600 is most compitable with classic ocs/ecs "a500" games, while the a1200 run the newer aga games but not so compitable with old ocs games. The a600 cannot run any of the newer aga games at all, but will run nearly all of the older a500 games.

the a600 is mostly just a smaller version of the a500+, with the exception of things like built in ide and pcmcia and different expansion slots.

But if you get a a1200, then i would highly recommend a hard drive upgrade if it lacks one, as you can use a hd installer to get alot of those troublesome ocs/ecs games working.

Greetings CodeHunter,

You can have the best of both worlds. ;-) If you can spand a few more $$$ you can expand both machines to its extreme.

Take for example the:-) A600 extreme upgrade site.:-) If you like to push it to the limits! You can learn much about how to expand it.

Also the A1200 D-box is also a good value if you're into extreme expandability. Hope that helps. ;-)
