Looking for alt OS for Atari/Mac Classic
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:42:55 AM »
I briefly used an OS that ran on the Atari ST, and classic Mac, but from within Mac OS.

I can not recall the name of it, but two come to mind.

MINT, which I do not believe is it.

Magic, which I believe is it, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone have any information about this?

Can anyone guess where I'm going with this? ;)

If my friend had an account here, he could tell you better. But in a nutshell, it was a very slick and very fast Pre-Emptive Multitasking OS for the Atari ST line of computers.

I do not recall how compatible was with software written for Gem or what ever, but I do know that it had a nice selections of apps already written for it which ran amazingly fast!

Nearly everything was in German, but with a Hex Editor, you were often able to go through and translate the programs (as well as the OS itself) into English.

As a side bonus, they ported the project over to work on the 68k Mac line of computers, though you could only launch it from within Mac OS. Amazingly enough, it still flew!!! I remember stripping down Mac OS down to the bare basics and setting this OS up to auto launch during boot time. One thing I remember is that I was able to go on-line with it, and I often forgot that Mac OS was running underneath because the speed increase is SO HUGE!

I knew someone here had to know about this and or had used it at one time! :)

I almost forgot the PC incarnation of this...

...sadly, not near as amazing.

Is there still any place to find this on the web?   (EDIT)

WooHoo, the E-mail address is dead!!! :/

I REALLY wish I still had that CD my buddy burned off for me years ago. It was unsorted, but it was packed full of registered and free software of this nature. Evil I know, but it was given to me at a time when the ST scene was declared commercially deceased.

Well now this is interesting. What are the requirements? I might have to throw this on my SE/30 just for kicks when I get it up and running...

I've no idea actually, I've only seen it ran on an old 040 Mac Laptop, my friend's old STE, and my Quadra, though...

I think anything above a 68000 should work just fine, heck maybe a 68000 is enough, I dunno.

Of course this ground may be covered in the Wiki, but I've not gotten around to reading it yet. :)

I'm personally interested in seeing this run under Shape Shifter. I don't think I have room for a Mac in my house...

an Amiga yes, but Mac?

Hmmm..

I installed MagiC under shape shifter, but when I launch it, it says something in German about 030/040 FPU and PPC.

I took a photo and was going to translate it but forgot to bring the photo with me.

You can translate it your self (once it is installed) through a hex editor.

PC version is underwhelming btw. Best ran on a Quadra.

I'd be curious to see how well this performs on OS X, though I only own Amigas so ShapeShifter it is...

...assuming I can get it to work.

Without knowing ANY German? I think not.

PC version is the only one that really interests me.

Here is the error I get on my A600 with ACA 030 board...

Lauft nur mit CPU 68030, 68040, 68020/68851 oder PowerPC.

Something tells me MagiCMac does not recognize what ShapeShifter is running on top of. ;)

I don't think you can full MagiC Mac using Shape Shifter. It would certainly seem it needs to be run on real hardware.

The upside is that it appears that MagiCMac does support PPC processors so maybe, just maybe I can get it to work on my of my eMacs running on OS9.

If that does not work, maybe I can install OS X and give the OS X version a go.

It's really a wonder they never ported this OS to the Amiga.

Not the first time that i ask, just i wonder how hard might be to do a port of AROS for mac classic and other 68k/PPC old world non/amiga machines based on 68k Amiga port, and how good might perform...

Saimon69

I've thought about that too, but then realized that in the end all that we would have would be a Mac that could run Amiga software that never makes direct calls to the chip set...

...but only much slower than such software would run under MorphOS on a cheap eMac, thus making such a venture pointless.

On the other hand it would be nice to see AROS more fully developed for classic Amiga. Then we would be able to at least make free Emergency disks without the use of Work Bench files.
