Title: Icaros or Broadway - Which one? Why?
Post by: Heiroglyph on October 20, 2010, 02:41:33 AM
I'm getting a confused Linux-noob feeling trying to get Aros.

Which one should I use and why?

Thanks

So far I can't complete the Icaros install without a lockup and my keyboard doesn't work.

The same USB keyboard is fine on an Amiga with Poseidon.

It worked fine on my HP USB keyboard, I haven't tried an install with my Logitech wireless yet. I haven't bothered reinstalling until they have more full graphics drivers.

I doubt it is the keyboard causing the trouble. Did you try the try before installing option, that will let you know if everything is compatible.

On the third try it installed.

I'm not sure if it was luck or the fact that I didn't change the resolution of the Intel GMA driver.

I still have no keyboard until I open Trident and power cycle the keyboard.

I can plug and unplug the device and see by the dialogs that Aros knows it is there, it just doesn't work until after the software power cycle.

I think I'll try the same thing again on a new install so that i can have a keyboard while installing.

It would be nice to make more than one partition and I can't do that without a keyboard.

The differences arent as great as between linux distros as the core components are the same with AROS distros (so far). Although I dont use either (I use my own system) I'd probably be more inclined to go with Icaros at the moment, for no reason other than its been in development a lot longer and is probably a little more mature because of it. Having said that though Broadway is more active latealy, so it might be a better AROS experience for the latest and gratest developments. Both will probably require a little tweaking to get working as you like (as is the nature of amiga based oses), so I dont think it'd make a lot of difference.
As for waiting for more gfx drivers with full support, AROS does have the most hardware support of any amiga os system by a long, long way. You'll be waiting a while if you want Windows level support.
Now as for usb keyboards, have you enabled legacy usb support in the bios? I had the same problems as yourself until I did that and now its fine.

I always use Icaros, but a lot of work is going into Broadway and it is evolving into a really nice looking distro.

On instalation, yes, Icaros 1.2.4 has had issues on intall not sure why. But once up and running all is great. I actually use Aros most of the time when I am not working now so it is very usable as a single system.

For those having lock ups. Make sure you burn the iso at a slow speed. If you are locking up at the boot loader install. use lcaros 1.2.3 boot looader. you will need to download the whole iso again but it should work it did for me. Install with 1.2.4 then after lock up boot with 1.2.3 and just choose the boot loader to install. Hope this helps

Broadway is done from scratch and has less unworking stuff. Except CW in some cases but this will be solved. Broadway fits on CD and the next release will be smaller without loosing applications.

Any fix a user find can be reported per thread or mail and i make a small hotfix you can easely install via click on "Up2date".

IcAROS comes on DVD and has nearly all available stuff for AROS in it. So if you just wan't a all in one solution use IcAROS. Mayn time and work has gone in it. Oh and it has a good manual which i have still to do ; )

Braodway sports only a collection of individial apps - for every need just one is the goal. This apps should be still supported.... and will be supported soon as they are key apps.

As soon the user management is solved i will show AEROS.... more than a distribution but bounded to my Hardware. Broadway will be the "free" demo version if you like.

No IcAROS and Broadway are Distributions.
AROS is the OS.

LINUX= OS
UBUNTU= Distribution

Yay.  More fragmentation.  Just what we need.
