Which one is better for WB2.1 with SCSI CD drive? :hammer:
-
I like the Asimware...it is easy to install and has lots of other great tools!
-
Been a while since I ran a 2.1 system, but I also recommend Asim.

AsimCDFS worked great with easy setup for me and helped me to get the CDDA game music to play properly with a supported CD-Rom.

Just tried AsimCDFS 3.10 but when I enable "Amiga Audio" in its CD player program, it can't transfer music to Amiga well :(

You need a fast CPU for that. From your other threads I gather you're trying to do this with a 68000. I'd start here:

AllegroCDFS

• Supports direct audio grabbing from standard audio CDs.

What that option does is transfer the CD audio over the data cable (SCSI) rather than the analog outputs on the drive. There's some CPU-intensive data conversion required, which is why you're getting choppy output and a slow system.
If you can capture the analog audio directly from the CD drive then that option won't be necessary. And you'll be able to get CD audio from applications other than AsimTunes as well (i.e., games). I think this thing (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=485) from Amigakit will do the trick and mix the Amiga audio and CD audio into one set of outputs. Amigakit sells another cable that just gives you RCA outputs from the CD drive so you can connect CD audio externally to an existing mixer.
If you've got a lot of audio sources, something like this Rolls mixer (http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=MX44s) might be a good choice. I use one to merge Paula, a Sunrize 516, and a OneStopMusicShop. There's also a cheaper unpowered version (http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=MX41b) that might work. You'll need a lot of Y-cables, though :)

I second that; a mixer box is required for a A1200 type machine. With big box Amigas the mixer is built in (the sound module on A4000T has custom header but a PC cable will work if the pins are switched), you just need the CDDA cable. Other than that you need to make sure the CD-Rom is a MMC compliant drive and your good to go for Amiga CD games including Napalm, Another World 2, Exodus: The Last War etc! It felt great hearing the Napalm sondtrack for the first time through the Amiga speakers rather than on a CD-player back when I couldn't figure it out :-)

I'll add my own recommendation for AsimCDFS. I've used it for years, mostly because I'm old and don't like change, but also because it suits my needs perfectly and has "just worked".

I'm going to jump here and ask another question.
Where can you download/buy the most recent version of AsimCDFS?
I see aminet has an older version, but would prefer to go with the most recent version.

Best bet's gonna be the EAB FTP server. :hammer:

CacheCDFS is most used. My vote for it.

@curtis (http://www.amiga.org/forums/member.php?u=5794)
I got a fairly recent release from Softhut in the US shortly before they became an eBay discount merchant ;-) A very worthwhile import along with a MMC compliant slot loading CD-Rom drive :-)
From: http://wikivisually.com/wiki/SCSI_Multimedia_Commands
SCSI Multimedia Commands (MMC) defines a SCSI (http://wikivisually.com/wiki/SCSI)/ATAPI (http://wikivisually.com/wiki/ATA_Packet_Interface) based command set for accessing multimedia (http://wikivisually.com/wiki/Multimedia) features on devices capable of such functionality. T10 subcommittee (http://wikivisually.com/wiki/T10_subcommittee) is responsible for developing it as well as other SCSI command (http://wikivisually.com/wiki/SCSI_command) set standards.

Well, actually AmiCDFS is the only one which is available to you semi-legal.
AsimCDFS is a commercial product. Unfortunately you cannot buy it any more.
CacheCDFS is a commercial product. You get it if you buy either OS 3.5, OS 3.9 or IDE-fix (a.k.a. IDE-max).
AllegroCDFS is a commercial product. You get it if you buy a matching hardware from Elbox, but it needs this hardware as a dongle, otherwise it does not run.
AmiCDFS is shareware, but I think the author no longer cares.
There is also BabelCDFS, but it's targeted more towards WB 1.3.
-
AllegroCDFS there is also version without hardware from Elbox.
-
Here's another hijack question: which works with DVDs?
-
DVDs can be recorded in a standard filesystem or mixed.
AllegroCDFS support only DVD-Video UDF 1.02 (http://www.elbox.com/products/allegro_cdfs.html)
Now virtually all programs recorded in the mixed or UDF 1.50 and higher.

I have had some trouble with 3.10 (the newest - I think) and dropped back to 3.8. This still my favorite software for the CD/DVD on my A2000.
Version 3.10 shows up on ebay every now & then - but be careful, a lot of them are bootlegged, and do not work correctly.

Bummer. No Elbox hardware here.

Strange, I have 3.10 on my 2000 with GVP combo 030/40Mhz, works fine.

AllegroCDFS support DVD UDF 1.02
They say so, but in practice it's of no use. I tried many DVDs with both CacheCDFS and AllegroCDFS. What could be read by AllegroCDFS could be read by CacheCDFS, too. And what could not be read by CacheCDFS could not be read by AllegroCDFS, too. So AllegroCDFS is not a single bit better than CacheCDFS.

Is there anyway to force AsimCDFS to work only in Joliet mode as default?

What kind of problem?

I agree Asim is the best ive used.

So Amigans, I have just got my CD-Rom up and running alas no audio, from what I have been reading I need AsimCDFS to play audio from Paula, but annoyingly it is a commercial product that is not for sale anywhere.
Doe anyone know of any other filesystems readily available so I can get CD audio from my Amiga
AllegroCDFS does not seem to be available from Elbox anymore
Thanks Spud 8)

The "Amiga Audio" option in AsimTunes is really just a workaround for listening to music CDs in that program only. To really integrate a CD drive into your system (i.e., to enable CD audio for every program that supports it), you need to connect the audio output of the CD drive to speakers or a mix it with your Paula output. Unfortunately, it looks like the mixer solution from AmigaKit that I mentioned in my previous post (https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=71991.msg822314#msg822314) is no longer available. But this (https://rolls.com/product/MX44-P) and this (https://rolls.com/product/MX42) seem to be the successors to the powered and unpowered mixers I mentioned previously. If you fix things at the hardware level then it doesn't matter which CDFS you use--they all support analog CD audio.
If your heart's set on AsimCDFS, though, try over at EAB (which has a more liberal policy towards sharing discontinued commercial software) or eBay. I see several copies on there at the moment.

Exactly. :D
-
Some CDFS support access to audio as files, so you could use e.g. play16 to play those anyway you like or import directly into Samplitude for example.
-
you could use playCDDA or songplayer.
I remember some CDROM drives allow the player to play through the SCSI cable
-
Thanks for the pointers guys. A hardware solution is not an option as I am using a slimline device from Vesalia with no audio out on it.
I have tried cdda, and I am getting audio from the CD alas the left speaker only. I have tried various settings in AHI including switching to mono but cannot seem to get it to play out of both speakers. I will have a go of Songplayer..
My poor old 1221 accelerator is struggling though. On the Vampire waiting list ;-)

@ spudmiga
Depending on how Vesalia configured the unit, there might be an adapter like this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Slim-CD-ROM-IDE-ATA-Adapter-Laptop-Server-SlimLine-mini-40-pin/302304502108) inside the case, which has an audio-out plug. Then you could hook up a cable and route it outside. Unfortunately, you'd probably need to modify one end of it to hook up RCA jacks or a 3.5mm stereo connector--I can't seem to find any pre-built cables like that. Or maybe Amigakit could do a custom one for you, since they used to sell them.
