My understanding is that MUI4 for 68K is somewhat unpolished/unstable. I wonder if you'd have better luck with MUI5 which has been refined a bit further? There are almost no user-level differences between 4 and 5, although I don't know what's changed internally.

But before you try that, I remember years ago when MorphOS moved from MUI3.9 to 4.0. There are significant differences in how 4.0 handles prefs settings, and loading in a prefs file from 3.9 was leading to all sorts of bizarre rendering and layout errors. So it's possible MUI4 is choking on your IBrowse MUI3 settings so badly that it's causing a crash.

To verify, delete or temporarily rename ENVARC:mui (I think that's the path...don't have my Amiga in front of me to check) and reboot, which should reset all your MUI settings. Hopefully the defaults will get your programs back to normal, but you'll have to go through and manually set all your MUI preferences again.

Darn, sorry that didn’t work. Is it still crashing even if you load the MUI global prefs program (from the MUI: path)? I wonder if the global prefs file or the ENVARC:MUI path needs to exist for things to work. Did the install archive come with a default global prefs file? Only other thing I can think of is that 5.0 still has severe stability problems. Beyond that, I’m out of ideas :(

Is there a Guru error number or does it just lock up?

Some guesses:
1. Fall back to MUI 3.8, which is the most stable version for 68k.
2. SnoopDos output ends as IBrowse is attempting to open images. What version (format/depth) of the images and transfer animation did you install? I wonder if this is actually an image datatype crashing. Check your datatype versions/settings. Could the image datatype be running out of RAM?

Really strange.
Now that you're back on MUI 3.8, are your MUI settings back to default? (delete/rename the MUI stuff in ENVARC: and reboot)
IBrowse settings back to default? (delete/rename ibrowse.prefs or whatever the file is called)
Tried fresh installing IBrowse? (install to new directory instead of overwriting a previous install - I think not all files get replaced on an update)
NList up to date?
IBrowse comes with its own .mcc for the cache explorer - try replacing that manually (the installer will skip it if it already exists).

Anything else noteworthy in your system? Hacks, patches, drivers, commodities? Zorro cards?

X-Surf drivers up to date? VA2000 drivers/firmware up-to-date? Latest P96?

This is a really weird one!

If you've got spare hard drive space I'd suggest creating a new bootable partition. Put only a fresh install of the OS, TCP/IP stack, MUI 3.8, and IBrowse on it. If it still fails in that configuration I wonder if you're looking at a hardware issue like a loose accelerator connection or aging capacitors or power supply...

Sounds like you've accounted for the most likely hardware issues, so it's either software or something far sneakier with the hardware.

Any luck with the fresh partition? What filesystem are you using? Can you replicate your hardware config in WinUAE and see what happens there? (obviously this is only possible up to a point since I don't think X-Surf 100 and VA2000 can be emulated)
