JR-Comm
« on: November 16, 2014, 12:36:40 AM »
I know it sounds silly... But modern PCs are a pain to do plain old RS-232 terminal work with, and I have a few applications.

I loaded up an old copy of JR-Comm and it does exactly what I need. My question is whether John Radigan is around to register it anymore. The delay screen is annoying, and ethically I got alot of use out of it back when I was young and broke.

Does anyone know?

A few years back, when our office was in Oakland, the phone system and internet broke down and by using Jr Comm at home, was able to download a file we needed. Luckily my apartment still had a land line that we had hooked up.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

I liked Access myself, over JR-Comm

I don't know that I used Access... I just remember that I liked JR-Comm better than Terminus.

As I recall, Access has something like ZModem and was simpler to use over JR-Comm (Terminus was horrible).

Ah, JR-Comm.  I haven't touched it in years, but I am almost positive I got a registered version with my first Amiga system I bought second-hand back in 1993.

BTW, PuTTY has been doing serial for the past few releases, and does it well and cleanly.  Might be worth having a look-see if you get stuck around PCs.

IIRC I found NComm to be better than JR-Comm. NComm is available with a public key from Aminet: http://aminet.net/package/comm/term/ncomm306

I also preferred NComm over Term or other terminal programms.
For completenes, here is the link to the keyfile: http://aminet.net/package/comm/term/NComm306PubKey

Can JR-Comm be downloaded anywhere?  I've tried searching and come up empty.  I would love to have it just for the nostalgia purposes it would bring me :)  I'd even pay for a key if that were still possible.

Wow, I busted out JR-comm for the first time in years thanks to the WiFi232.  Kernel, you are in NYC eh?  I run an Amiga user group in White Plains.  We meet on the first Thursday of every month.  If you come up there is a chance JR-Comm will fall out of my pocket.  My pants are old and I have holes in them ;-)

I always used jrComm on my A2000 back in the late ‘80s and then later used the more recent iteration, Terminus, on my A1200. I’m using jrComm on my A1000 these days and it’s what I used in this WiFi232 video I made recently, if you want to see it in action.

I use JR-Comm almost daily, as my CDTV serves as the console for my Sun Netra server.

I have not thought about this software in a long time. Back in the day, if you were into the scene you were using jrcomm and an HST modem (configured with MAAD Modem)  to do your high speed transfers.

One of the best things my friends and I came up with was a hacked version of ZModem that we used with jrcomm. We compiled our own version of ZModem to say the transmission was incomplete on the last bit which wasn't needed as it was just an acknowledgement. So we got the file which worked great but the bbs thought the transfer didn't go through. This worked with boards that used credits.

Good memories,

LOL I'm actually in South Carolina now haven't updated my profile... I ended up finding the demo deep in a link somewhere I think on EAB.  Still need to unpack it :)
