YAM security?
« on: November 10, 2002, 03:24:53 PM »
Never thought on this really but when typing in your email information and passwords and the like, are there encryptions on those or if someone was a good enough hacker, could the passwords be compromised?  I showed YAM to a buddy of mine and he was so sold on it that he went for Amiga Forever to emulate it and check his mail with it on his PC, and I couldn't answer his question...

I wish i could say I agree with YAM being great. Unfortunately I can`t. I only tried to get it going
today. I can`t seem to install v2.23 (I think) from aminet. It gets to a point where it can`t find a
file in the install script.

I want this program as for ages I have been hearing great things about it. It would be cool to see
it, and maybe even use it once or twice :-D

Thanks

I guess you have read the docs for it? I hope it is encrypted.

@Nick

Ofcourse, this is the Amiga forum where the nicest people on earth resides, so I doubt anyone would have a grudge. :)

You might try another version of YAM, since I had the same problems with one a few weeks ago, unable to install it.  :-(

@Desolator

Yep MOST of us are nice people. As I have said before we are almost down to a core of nice people. Generally the nicer people last longer cuase they are the ones who say nice things and don`t lose hope easily.
Anyway thats my psychological analysis of the Amiga community over with :-D

I don't know about encryption, but at least we don't have to fear
attachments.

I donĀ“t think you really need the installer script.
Just put the files where you want and make an
assignment of YAM: to that folder.

It worked for me...

Yes there are. Load the file YAM:.config into Multiview and search for the lines "SMTP-AUTH-Pass" and "POP00.Password". They contain your password(s) and they're not in human readable form.

or if someone was a good enough hacker, could the passwords be compromised?

YAM doesn't execute E-Mail attachments. Therefore a hacker would have to gain remote access to your system. This is *extremely* unlikely and practically not possible.

POP3 and SMTP are not secured. There are implementations that use SSL, but even if your client will support this your ISP is unlikely to.

I think you can use PGP on YAM but I couldn't get it to work.

If I do, I'll let you know.

I've messed around with PGP ages ago and it seemed to work nicely with YAM, but I hadn't any need for it.

Thanks for all the answers, people. Yet another one (my friend I was mentioning before) has joined the ranks of "checking my mail with Amiga YAM".  :-D
