Softkicking Amiga
« on: March 24, 2003, 02:57:57 PM »
I'm in a little dilema. Because I cannot setup SCSI CD-Rom, on my A2000 (ks 1.3) I softkicked my Amiga to ks 2.05, but still no success. I wanted to use different ROMs with zKick and it didn't work (only 34.175).

So has anybody tried to softkick his/her Amiga?

Which programs are you using (zKick, sKick ...)?

On which Amiga did you try it (A500, A2000, A3000...)?

I dunno. I kick mine pretty hard when it won't play ball :-D

More seriously though, I tried softkicking once or twice and found it to be a mixed bag. It tends to work reasonably on MMU equipped machines, providing you get the right kicker for your particular setup.

You do know about setting the SCSI ID number, and terminator stuff? And, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a HD partioned into 2, DH0:, DH1:, would that be 2 SCSI ID's used???

And I have a CD-rom in my 1.3.3 A2000 computer, and don't think I have a terminator, but would need it for DH0:, so it's not running. I have no clue what kind of mountlist I need, or where I need to put it.

AmigaOne! Ahhhh, new (A1) HW, I can configure some stuff up now!

So I guess that A500, 600, 1000, 2000, CDTV, CD32, are pure garbage then? Thanks for posting here.

No. One ID per device.

My HD has id0 and 2 partitions - dh0 (500 MB, system+prog+games), and dh1 (500 MB, data+backup). It is connected internaly on cable that has 2 connectors (one to SCSI controller and another to HD). SCSI controler (MacroSystem Evolution) has another (external) connector on which my external CD-Rom is connected. CD-Rom is Yamaha CDR400tx, has 2 SCSI connectors, id5, and termination switch. And yew, I also have passive terminator somewhere.

What do I need to do to make it work? It seems that my knowlege in SCSI devices is not good enough.

@Atheist

What kind of CDFS are you using on your A2000? Can you explain a little more about your setup.

@Bara2000:

What you have seems to be a SCSI controller with two ports.  That's unusual.  For your setup, you need termination on the Controler (either through software or hardware,) and again for the hard drive, and the CD-ROM.  Normally, there is terminationat both ends of the ribbon, with any devices connected to the ribbon between the ends unterminated.  Since your controller seems to have two connectors, The last device on each ribbon needs to be terminated.  Also, each SCSI device needs its own ID number.

@Quixote

I don't think it is so unusual. It is a full length Zorro II SCSI 2 card containing an internal 50pin SCSI connector, and an external DB23 connector, just like A2090, A2091, A4091... More about this card, can be found on this link.

Hi baro2000,

Never got my CDR to work. When I connected it, the HD wouldn't work, so it's just sitting in there. Additionally, maybe it can't work with 1.3.3???

AmigaOne! Being current, fix incompatability.

@Atheist

This is why my A2000 is s-kicked. When I want to play games - it is a 1.3 machine, and when I want to work on it - it boots as 2.05. I even could not format HD under wb1.3 what is kind of weird. So I hope some day CD-Rom works on it because I have a lot of things to bring back to A2000 (modules, songs, demos, pd and of course - games).

I have an A3000 which started out as a
softkick machine. It had ver.37 roms.
I'm not real sure if the roms were actually
ram chips or not. Anyway, I used
a "SuperKickStart" disk. On installation the
version of kickstart I was using would be copied
from "Devs" to ram. I could select which "KS"
I wanted to use, 1.3-2.04 or3.1. I changed to
burned in roms because my accellerator would
not run on V37 roms. Check Aminet, there are
some prgs. that will copy KS into ram.

To my knowledge all SCSI devices have the
termination jumper on the device itself.
I have heard of software termination but I
don't think its as reliable as setting the
jumper. Just set the jumper on the last device
on the ribbon.
I have "CDX" for installing CD roms.
Works ok for me.

@melott

Do you still know which ks 1.3, 2.04 or 3.1 did you run CDX on?

The CD install procedure differs from ks 2.04 to 3.1. And did you just run CDX and setup was done automaticaly?

Hmmm..
I have "CDX"version 2.01. I've had it for several
years.I never installed it on a 1.3 partition.
Ihave installed in 2.04 dos and 3.1dos.
I don't remember there being any difference in
the way the prg.ran. It is all about the same.
You just run CDX and answer the prompts along
the way. It asks for your drive name and device
number which you set with several switchs on the
drive. Usually the termination is also with these
switchs.
No docs came with my CDX but it was mostly
self explanatory. It took me a couple times
to figure it out, if I can do it, It's not that
bad ;-)
If you are having trouble .. Email me I'll try
to help.

(you probably have a newer ver. of CDX then me)
