Title: Is there a program that can save AmigaGuide files as plaintext?
Post by: garyg on January 30, 2022, 03:47:01 PM
Hi, my Amigas aren't connected to my printer and I would like
to save the Roadshow AmigaGuide file to a text file, leaving out the
hyperlink symbols, to print it out.

Is there a program that does that?

Maybe use GuideML to convert it to a single file HTML, and then print it from a web browser?

I can't answer the general question about AmigaGuide, but for your particular case Roadshow comes with a printable PDF version of the documentation. I can't recall if it gets copied during installation, so you might need to go back to your original downloaded archive to get the file.

Or you can print it using the File printer driver, then copy that file over to the system connected to the printer and print it there.

Best regards,

Niels

Sorry, I can't find the PDF file to which you refer. I downloaded the
Roadshow archive from Aminet again and there are only four files:
the program file and its .info file and a readme file and its .info file

@garyg:

I think you are referring not to RoadShow, but to Roadie, which is a third-party GUI for the RoadShow TCP/IP stack.

RoadShow (for OS3) is a commercial product and contains, I am sure, much more than four files.

Best regards,

Niels

It seems you're right. I re-downloaded a demo and it indeed
has .pdf documentation, which unfortunately has little about setting up
Roadshow in a wi-fi environment (in which I live)

WiFi or cabled shouldn't matter to a TCP/IP stack like RoadShow, those are different layers in the network model ("ISO model"). A successfully connected WiFi interface should simply appear to the TCP/IP stack as a device/unit like any other, to which you can then assign (or seek, if using DHCP) an IP address for your machine (interface).

It's more likely you need to seek out some docs for the device driver for your WiFi card.

(Well, unless the OS3 version of RoadShow includes some extra stuff I don't know about. I'm using it under OS4.x.)

Best regards,

Niels

I don't have a "wi-fi card". I live in a community with an "enterprise" wi-fi network
with access points in the ceilings (and tech support which, of course, knows nothing
about Amigas :-(

I'm not sure I know exactly what you are describing, but if you attach an ethernet cable between your Amiga and that access point, you have a normal cabled interface as seen from the Amiga. If on the other hand your Amiga is supposed to receive the WiFi signal coming out of the access point, you have to have a WiFi card (adapter or whatever) in or next to your Amiga, and on the "inside" of that card, it will look the same to the system.

In both cases, when set up correctly, they will just be interfaces (NICs) and seen as such by the TCP/IP stack.

Best regards,

Niels

Nitpicking… OSI model, not ISO… and TCP/IP was the counterpart to the rather rigid OSI model, so even when people like to talk in terms of OSI layers, they strictly speaking don’t apply so rigidly to the layers in TCP/IP, which in reality are far looser defined.

As for the other stack relevant to the topic, the 802.11 wifi stack - that one is ISO :)

In general I would suggest not doing wifi with the Amiga itself, and rather connect the Amiga using ethernet to something more capable, with active support, that also does modern wifi (not just 802.11b) and modern encryption. As a bonus, the Amiga will not waste lots of precious CPU on just being online.

Yeah, I know. I blame mind regression :-D. Back when I first learnt about it 30+ years ago, the 7 layer model was referred to as the ISO model, at least here in Denmark. And you're right, of course, about TCP/IP sort of "bleeding" between the layers, but mostly between what in the OSI model is called layer 3 and 4, not down to level 2 (data link layer, e.g. Ethernet). Still, to a large degree, TCP corresponds to layer 3 (network) and IP to layer 4 (transport).

I agree. I have in the past successfully used a Netgear WNCE2001 WiFi adapter and a small switch in front of my Sams which were in the living room where I didn't want to haul Ethernet cable. This was with the WiFi from our own router, but it might also work in garyg's situation.

Best regards,

Niels

NEXT has just been released on Aminet and might fulfill your needs : http://aminet.net/package/text/show/Next

NEXT is a fast and compact text viewer, written in assembly.
It displays all kinds of files including binaries, crunched and
  archived files. OS 3.x required.

  Features
  --------
  - Hypertext viewer for HTML (offline) and AmigaGuide documents.
Doesn't need amigaguide.library but uses it if wanted
  - Conversion of various text formats:
IBM/MSDos text, MacIntosh text, MacBin, FTXT, RTF, MSHelp files, Unix
manual pages, LinuxDoc, DocBook, MSWord, MacWord, MSWrite, WordPerfect,
    FinalWriter, AmigaWriter and WordWorth
  - Unicode support
  - decrunches and displays powerpacked data files (internal routine), XPK
files and LZ77 compressed (SZDD) files
  - unpacks and displays archived files by external dearchivers
(LhA,LZX,ZIP,GZIP,RAR,COMPRESS,TAR) or by XAD (xadmaster.library and
clients). Archived files can be viewed without unpacking the whole archive
  - build-in commands: Copy, Delete, InitPrinter, Filenote
  - displays pictures and sounds by datatypes
  - has its own print routine for pictures
  - easy loading of your favorite files
  - font sensitive, font selection by font requester
  - saves/prints whole file or a definable block
  - printings can be done with headings and page numbers, position and style
    of heading can be selected
  - fast and effective search: all matches are displayed at once on screen
  - pattern search
  - search by mouse click
  - special search routine for strings within binaries
  - counts words, strings or chars within a file or block
  - scans directories using wildcards
  - Aminet support
  - bookmarks
  - appwindow
  - copies blocks to clipboard
  - size of displayed files unlimited
  - pipe support
  - reentrant code (can be made resident)
  ... and more

I should have mentioned that I have a PLIPBox.

I also have a DLink range extender, but I had no luck
connecting an Ethernet cable to it. I got the DLink from
local tech support when my wi-fi signal was sometimes too weak

Simplest and often cheapest solution is second hand airport express from Apple, using client mode.

Raspberry Pi will happily work as a bridge between wired and WiFi. Just make sure to get a model with both Ethernet and WiFi (ie a Pi 3B/3B+/4).

Very true, or Orange Pi zero which has both.

But getting hold of any sort of pi seems tricky these days.

Heddley exports to both HTML and PlainText. You can probably download from EAB Magazine Rack.
