WB 3.1 & 3.9 question
« on: August 07, 2016, 02:50:30 AM »
I have, on WinUAE, set up a system using one of those pre-installed versions of Workbench, I think it was called ClassicWB.   With that distribution, the workbench will have icons on it other than just the available disk drives on the Amiga.  Items such as programs, quick launch stuff, etc. will all be on the desktop as links to the programs.

If I try to, on my A1200 (3.1) or A3000 (3.9) put anything onto the desktop and then reboot, the icon is gone after reboot from the desktop.  How does one get their workbench desktop to work like the ClassicWB setup I described on my WinUAE?   Namely, I'd like to leave shortcuts on the desktop, in the same fashion as Windows.

Thanks!

For more info, are you using new ROM's from Cloanto or is this an older machine?

You could always download one of the Classic WB packs onto your machine.  IMHO they're too bloated and make the system too "un-Amiga like" but to each their own. ;)

From memory, you need to select the icon and 'leave out' from a menu. If you don't do this the icon vanishes after a reboot like you describe.
A1200 in DIY Tower. 3.0 ROMS (but 3.1 in RAM), 3.5" HD, CD Rom and IDE to SD adapter running off the internal IDE port (using the A4000 4-port IDE adapter from Amigakit), Blizzard 1230-IV, with 32MB 60ns RAM and 50MHz 68882 FPU. 3COM PCMCIA Network card running with Miami DX. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PrGdL6XjmE

And then 'snapshot' too.

Yes, select your icon(s) with a single left click or multiselect, then go to the 'Icons' menu and select 'Leave Out'.

Then position these icon(s) on the Workbench (desktop) to your taste. Then select the icon(s) again and select 'Snapshot' from the 'Icons' menu.

It's worth pointing out that nothing gets moved to the Workbench, just examine the .backdrop file on the root directory of your partition and you'll see.

When you'd like the icon(s) to return back to their original place, select them and then select 'Put Away' from the 'Icons' menu. They'll need to be snapshot again if you care about their position as they'll retain their current X-Y position from when they were last snapshot (in this case, positioned as if on the Workbench).

Worth noting here is that you cannot 'Leave Out' a file or drawer UNLESS it has an associated .icon file. You can only see .icon files through the CLI/Shell with 'list' or 'dir', or with directory utilities such as Dopus or Filemaster etc.

Agreed...it's fine to play with on UAE, but, definitely bloated.  I wouldn't put it on my machines.
