Rapidroad for x-surf 100 issues
« on: May 01, 2015, 10:47:35 PM »
I installed my x-surf100 a while ago and got decent internet speeds on my 4000T.
And since I bought it so that I could add the usb card (rapidroad) when it came out.

So, I got the rapidroad, installed it, down loaded the software,(it doesn't come with) installed that.

All seemed good, I tested usb mouse, worked. I tested usb keyboard, worked.
I tested usb stick, got a red alert sound and the machine locked up. Tried other usb sticks.

Talked to AmigaKIt several times, followed all their suggestions.
Ran thru all the fixes, re-installing, upgrading, using powered hub...

It still will not work with usb sticks!

Any help?

Huh.  What version of massstorage.class do you have, and how is it configured?  I assume AmigaKit had you do a complete clean/removal and reinstall of the software?  Do you have the A1200 version of the RapidRoad (that comes with the acrylic case, removed for use with the X-Surf 100) or the standard version?  (Their firmwares are different)

What format/size/brand are your USB sticks?  FAT/FAT32/NTFS should all work, if you have FAT95 and NTFileSystem in your L: directory.

For what it's worth, my RapidRoad has got to be one of the most fool-proof things I've bought for my Miggy.  Sure, it has it's issues, it chokes up if I daisy-chain too many hubs and doesn't like some brands of mice, but overall it works well.

I submit for your amusement, this picture of mine with two hubs plugged in (one in the monitor and the other one daisy-chained into that), three USB drives, a keyboard, and a mouse, all plugged in.  :)

Also a pic of my massstorage prefs.  Do yours match?

(Edit - added a pic of 2nd page of prefs)

I have the version  of raipidroad for the x-surf100
I first installed it in a Escom A4000T w/quickpak 060 128 megs that had a clean install of 3.1. The tower has buster11, 3.1 roms and the only card is a picasso4.
I used poseidon 4.5 which I dl'ed from Jens site.
In the process of getting it to work, I ended up using 3.9 (for the input.device ver50)
As stated on the OP, mice, keyboard, hubs are okay.

When I try any usb stick, (from 256meg to 16 megs formated FAT and yes I have fat95 in L:)
it makes a lot of noise and hangs the machine!

Hrm.  I'm probably not going to be much help, but are you able to check your version of massstorage.class itself and confirm that it's settings match mine?

How about disabling massstorage.class so that the RapidRoad doesn't try to read the flash drive at all.   Can you plug it in, then?

What I'm thinking is, you may have some kind of configuration error, and when you plug in a USB drive it's trying to bind it to the wrong kind of class and failing that way.  Sorry if you've already tried this, but can you try with a clean 3.1 with nothing but MUI and Poseidon loaded on it?  Or try the card on a different Amiga?  At least if it does the same thing on two different systems you'll know it's probably a hardware problem, as opposed to a software problem.  Good luck!  :)

Thx, Mike,
Well, this is interesting.
I swapped in my highway usb card and it worked correctly with Poseidon4.5.
BTW, setting were the same (default ) I think
So, I kinda modified your idea to check software/hardware.

Software is working!
I reported our findings to AmigaKit.

Quick update. Tried the x-surf100/rapidroad combo in a 4000 desktop with an 040.
The usb sticks worked correctly.

Now to find the incompatibility?

Other than a defect in the A4000T's circuitry,  then only a difference in CPUs, addition of a built-in A4091 and the T having a Buster 11 soldered in, I can't think of any reason.  Have you tried emailing Jens at jens(at)icomp.de?

This is a wierd issue.

No, not yet. He's next.

Not really, Jens had reported issues with a couple of 3640 cards and that the work around was to fall back to the zorro 2 mode by jumper.

Since I had already moved to the zorro 2 mode because Poseidon tossed errors when I had the card in zorro 3. That work around is not going to help me.

Since Jens states that the buster 11 is better, that's not a problem.
I don't believe the built in scsi is an issue, I using ide.

But maybe the cpu (quikpak 060) and it's edo ram (faster too) might be the issue?

As I was lead to believe, those adjustments to the card was for the benefit of the Ethernet aspect, and not the RapidRoad module.  Regardless, I would holler at Jens and see what he can tell you.  By setups haven't had those issues with the RapidRoad (although the X-surf 100 does have issues with the A3640, resolved with a CS MK2).
