You could always just use an amiga :-) I run an A1200 with an 030 accelorator card in and it's been running now for almost 117 days withouth the need to reboot. I just registered a domain and had it point to my IP address, simples!

A friend of mine uses a Bifferboard: http://bifferos.co.uk/
Not much powerful but enough to host his webpage and only uses 1 watt.

Really small, but maybe a bit limited:

http://plugcomputer.org/

I host multiple sites on a SheevaPlug and USB based harddrive.   It works fairly well, except for a few problems with occasionnally needing to drag laptop with a USB cable to get a debug terminal in case it stops working. :P

That said, it was the best small server I've used.  I had an Efika for a while (while I was waiting for MOS for it) and a first gen fitPC.  Both systems worked fine, but the extra ram found in the SheevaPlug works more.

That said the newer fitPCs have better specs: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/ .

In both cases the SheevaPlug and FitPCs would need you to setup and install the webservers, email servers (including spam filters), and even the OS.  There are some decent packages like ehcp.

I used to run a couple of rack mount servers in my garage, but they were too noisy and power hungry.  Now I just leave my cocktail table MAME system on 24/7, running Windows XP and online via WiFi.

Bonus, it's always ready to play a game.  It's also hosting that picture!

Damn, do I have to put in 25 cents to get on the interewebs at Tone's house?

Running your own mail is not such a good idea really. Too much work than it is worth IMHO. Just get a Gmail account and be happy.

I should add an Amiga to my server park too. Can not really think of anything else than to put an Amiga banner and system spec on the hosted site though :-P

I used to have the quarter slot connected to the power button connector on the old PC I had in there so dropping in a quarter would power it up, but I didn't bother reconnecting it when I swapped a different PC in.

I agree, the work isn't the worst part of it though, what stinks is when your server is offline for a couple of days and you don't notice.

The Bifferboard looks cool. A 150 MHz 486sx with 32 megs of memory is more than enough to run a web server. Heck, I have Drupal running on an m68060 Amiga with NetBSD, and I'd guess that'd be about the speed of a 150 MHz 486sx (although the Amiga has more memory).

The Sheevaplug type machines are good because they don't rely on other things besides some USB storage (unlike that webservusb, which is just a marketing gimmick and useless). I have a Dockstar (same basic chipset as Sheevaplug) running NetBSD and with a 1.2 GHz StrongARM you can pretty much run any kind of web software you want.

Email is a different issue. If you're willing to invest the time (a LOT of it), you'd have much more control over your own email than if you went with Gmail. I started hosting my own email back in the '90s and will never give it up because services like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo do certain things terribly wrong (like content based filtering) and therefore cannot be considered deterministic. When my machine does filtering (based ONLY on the sending server), everything gets logged and reported, so it's entirely deterministic. I require that.

Would I recommend it to just anyone? No. If you need or really want deterministic email, then the kind of people who'd play with Amigas would probably do better than most.

BTW - webservusb.com is a scam. I hope nobody actually bought that.
