Normally, the A500 PSU is indeed better compared to the A1200 PSU. There are roughle two types of A500 PSUs to find: the heavy one and the lightweight one. The heavy one is the old type, which was used with the KS1.2 version of the A500. You should go for the lightweight A500 PSU. It gives you at least 50% more capacity compared to your A1200 PSU, which is usually enough for your expanded A1200 with turbocard, extra ram, harddrive, soundcard and PCMCIA nic.

AKAIR there's something on a A1200HW guide that explains how to knock together an AT PSU converter to fit an A1200.

Try searching for that.

If all else fails then an A500 PSU will do the job for a while, but even mine blew eventually when powering my A1200/3.5"HDD/68040/40!

Dunno if anyone has already mentioned this about the 1200 PSU, but it was designed to run EITHER a 2.5" Hard disk OR a Fast mem card / CPU accelerator.

(It is actually rated at something like 23 Watts.)

I ran a Desktop 1200 for a good while with a 2.5" HDD and an Apollo 1230Lite Accelerator with an IDEfix'97 4 way buffered IDE card on the original Supply. however, it sometimes needed time to warm up, was a little flakey with Hardware stretching screenmodes (modified Super72 Monitor) and the CD I had on the IDE board was on its own supply (External case).

I have since towered it up, and have added an External Keyboard adapter (A4000 keyboard, naturlich !) a Silversurfer (clockport serial adaptor) for me modem, and a CD/Amiga audio mixer.

if you do what you stated above and get the AT/ATX PSU sorted you'll be well away.

PS- the higher clock rates usually demand more power, but you knew that anyway !

The stock A1200 PSU outputs a puny 3 Amps.  If you flip the PSU over you'll see the power output.

The A500's on the other hand can deliver 4.3 Amps.  It's not ideal but it's definately an improvement.   Oh, and it weighs the same as a brick!

Anyone know where I can get one ?

When me XE comes I'll need to re-desktop me A1200, and I'd kinda like to keep things like HDD's accelerators and serial adaptors - or even add a USB adaptor  :-o

I have an original A1200 brick (the big Grey one) and a later Escom brick (the little black one) as far as I can tell they can supply the same amount of power.

hmmm - thinks to self - wonder If I can use one to boost/supplement the power of the other ...   8-) :hammer: :-P :pint:  !!

Check the figures on both PSU's. If your A500's has a higher output (in amps), use that one. If there's no difference in output, you can use either, although both will be underpowered if you are planning on seriouisly upgrading your A1200.

If your A500 PSU is the heavy one, I expect there will not be much difference with the A1200's PSU output, though.

I've had some problems with my a1200.
It hardresets it self (even when it's
completely stripped for hd and cpu card).
This happens ca. once a hour. I think it can
be the psu which is from my old a500.

Have anyone experienced similar trouble?
