030 / 040 speed difference
« on: April 23, 2006, 09:57:01 PM »
i currently hae an 030 / 40hzs accelarator , how much faster is an 040, i know where i can get one fairly cheap but if no big difference i wont bother.
also is it worth paying the money for a 060/240 ppc or would it be best to wait for elbox's g3/g4 pci card im thinking about os4

in my experience, an 030 at 50mhz is around 9mips (Blizzard 1230IV)

I've also tried an Apollo 1240 040 at 33mhz, that clocked in at 20mips,

However you probably won't see much difference unless you have a graphics card, or like 3D games.

Edit: Ref Elbox and the SharkPPC cards, don't hold your breath as we've been waiting years and years for those.

I think an 040/25 is something like twice the speed of an 030/50.

The BlizzardPPC is the only PPC card which can run OS4.

Forget about Elbox's SharkPPC - it's been 5 years since it was announced.  First it was going to have WarpOS support from H&P then they said they were waiting for OS4 for AmigaOne to be released.  As it stands, Hyperion don't have one, it's never been demonstrated, it doesn't have an OS4 licence, and probably never even existed in any form other than that relabelled Sonnet PCI card that was shown at Cologne back in 2001.

A 040/25 is about 4 times faster than a 030/25 so in your case yeah about twice the speed.

As other's here say the 040 is faster though remember the 040 comes with huge compability issues. I say stay with a 030 untill you get enough $ to get a 060. It's even faster and have a lot less compability issues compared to the 040.

if you get get the 040 for cheap go for it as a 060/PPC is going to cost you way more.  And IMHO the 040 and 060 are both the same as far as compatibility goes.  Thats why you use WHDLoad for games!

 The 68060 is more compatible to the 68030 than the 68040? Weird!

@AmigaMance

Read Brians post again. He says that if he wants to upgrade, skip the 040 boards and go straight to the 060 boards, since the 060 is better compatible with software compared to the 040.

Another reason to skip the '040 is the issue of heat... These run much hotter than the '060s (which can run fanless with no problem).

Good answers here. 040 is much faster, but heat is an issue especially in a flat 1200. You'd be better of getting an 060 or 060/ppc card *IF* you can find a good price on one.

As for the Elbox card, as others have said it is nothing but vapour and all inidicators is it will stay vapour.

I'm of a different oppinion... what compability is concerned I belive the 060 have a clear edge over the 040 in plain "get it to run" but to get things to run propperly in right speeds and so on, especialy demos, the 060 is far supperior to the 040.

Put it another way**:
CPU / Speed / Compability / Heat / Cost
030/50 = 09mips/0*Mflops = :D = :) = $
040/25 = 18mips/5Mflops = :| = :( = $$$
040/40 = 28mips/8Mflops = :| = 8( = $$$$$$
060/50 = 67mips/28Mflops = :) = :D = $$$$$$$$$$$

(* Up to 1.2 Mflops if 68882 is also used
(** Figures can be influenced by my oppinion and are out of memory so is probably a bit off target.

Why would a 060 be more compatible then a 040?

A number of bad coded selfmodifying apps ran on the 030.
The reason that they did not crash on the 030 was the tiny cache of the 030. With the bigger cache of the 040 the sin of selfmodifying paid of and made them crash.

IMHO Most of the apps that ran on 68000-030 and crash on 040 crash because of selfmodifying code. And all these apps will crash on 060 too.

Can someone give a reason and name an example app why an app would crash on 040 but not on 060?

Cheers
Gunnar

Well, I was amazed by the fact that an 40/40 can actually play MP3 at full quality with stereo and 14bit calibrated!!. But then I'm using a WarpEngine wich has a very high memory bandwidth (60 or more MB/s) compared to other 68k cards (at least the A1200 ones) wich had very slow mem access.

@Jose -

I thought that 14 bit calibration only came with / worked with some MIDI app.  Does it work with all audio when installed?
