Title: What? No kvetching about the new header?

I'm amazed that you guys aren't up in arms over the new header logo.

Too much Xanax in the kool aid?  :)

LOL. :lol:

If you were to scientifically analyse this you would be led to the logical conclusion that if you don't hate Topaz you are a more laid back person more able and ready to accept change. ;)

Nice Logo btw.

Like most of my Amiga configurations, I'm relegated to the fact that this site is under constant change. Not going to get real comfortable with the look until it settles down a bit. Didn't even notice the header! lol

I saw it a little while ago, and was surprised the "a.org has changed" flame post had already slid off the front page.  I guess there never even was such a post - until now!  :-D

AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I was going to complain, but there was no thread to whine in. Thanks for making one. ;) Now I can bitch about...

I don't like the "Amiga. Community. Support." The script font is too "wimpy" and I don't like the sentence fragments. Also, I've always hated the word "community". Why is everything a "community" these days? Also, I don't like... what else... what else... ;)

The main logo is great though. I like the faint keyboard background.

The only thing to kvetch about is your abuse of those poor periods. Amiga. Community. Support. YUCK!

Make it one word. The Amiga Support Community.

Or maybe no subtitle? It reads a little bit like "Little. Yellow. Different." At least it's better than Asus telling me my motherboard is "Heart touching" every time I start my computer. How the eff can a motherboard be heart touching? Something definitely got lost in the translation.

This site looks less "amiga" every day.  Good job (NOT) on the header.  I liked the previous one with Amiga font better.
Prediction: Ah what else, a.org will get polutted with UAE folks and fewer actual amiga users but hey i've said this before.;-)

I posted the original comment here as a mid-line joke because the header had been up a few hours and no one had said anything.

THAT being said, I'm not a graphics artist and at this point, I'm going to just stop trying because it's incredibly obvious that some of you will never be happy, no matter what I do -- short of scrapping this all and putting back up PHP4 and the 9 year old Xoops package -- which isn't going to happen.

I'm done.  Anyone with legitimate comments, please feel free to submit your own version for consideration.  Those of you just bitching because you're just eternal, miserable gits, bite me...

You know, Wayne, if you need graphics for the site, you could just *ASK* me, or the several other graphic artists on the site. :idea:

I agree with the header, though. I think "Amiga. Community. Support" should be one, entire sentence.

Even though it's a fragment. :P

In my opinion all 4 are fine and dandy.

Finally, amiga.org spilt in a logo, Amiga - comp (only a 'comp' 'cause I'm now off the emulation AmigaSYS4 and it's miserable. :-( ), Community - the writing one is interesting, so it stands perfectly ok, support - where to buy what to get, games, again great.

LOL The cat biting the new post hand. :-))))))

1) I honestly don't get what people are so afraid of.  Isn't the Amiga community SUPPOSED to do things differently?

2) @terminator4, what the bleep do you want it to do to be more "Amiga"?  Come over to your house and bleep at you in translator.voice?  Quicherbitchen and just accept that Xoops is dead for the sake of he who cannot be named for political correctness reasons.

3) Marketing and dramatic emphasis.  You may not think the use of periods is grammatically correct, but three words people.  Three words which describes EXACTLY what we do and why we're here.  The periods, while not necessary, literally punctuate the words into memory.  If it had said "bitchy whiny tagline" you'd not even have noticed.

4) I am *so* tempted to put on one substituting the tagline for "keep bitching and I'll whip out Topaz.  I ain't skeered".

5 My second option is the choice between "Amiga. Community. Support. Period." or "Amiga. Community. Support. Dammit."

LOL at the cat biting the hand on the new thread thing.

Wayne, take a well deserved break!

Oh, I like the header - the AMIGA is nice, put the ".org" in the Topaz 8 font ;)

Not sure about the "Amiga. Community. Support" as the site isn't a support site, Amiga is mentioned above, so we're left with "Community". Maybe something that could mention the cross-community aspect - classic, modern, AROS, even MorphOS?

Wayne,
How about adding this "Amiga" which is scanned from my cover of Commodore Amiga product catalog as logo? (adding .org to it).???  At least it's got the classic Amiga font ;-)
And it is on Amiga 2000, 4000, 500/1200 as logo.
Maybe even adding 1 or 2 of the actual amiga machines (see the 3 machines, the A1200 is already transparent).
Make it transparent on grey/white gradient background?  Just my suggestion :-P
I have the 4MB scanned version for the artists on this site ready to be emailed.

@terminator.

If you can tell the difference between the "original" font (Bodoni) and Georgia (what I'm using now) so much so that it bothers you to the level you accuse this site of "becoming less and less Amiga" (which -- sorry, but -- I take to be an INCREDIBLY offensive accusation), then there's no resolution for that. Your eyesight is just too good, and your standards just too high.  Sorry.

For the record, I did try Bodoni first and the letter spacing between the I and the GA was really funky.  I could have probably manually spaced the letters, but does it really matter THAT much?

Besides, The "A" in OUR logo is Georgia, not Bodoni.  It always has been.

Ibrowse 2.4 "quick reply" button does not work?  "quote" seems to work.  Aweb 3.5 is the same.  The new A.org takes longer to load on than the older version on 060.  How's this for legit complaint and frustration on my part?  The "amiga" layout (the way ibrowse/aweb place out things) isn't as nice as on the old site.
Other than the few quirky users here (not using Amiga machines and not caring) thats fine. :-)

There is a proper place to report site issues.

As mentioned before, quick reply uses Javascript as do modern browsers.

It's not the site's fault if an old browser can't use some of the more modern features. Besides there is always the alternative. Use normal reply.

Why complain about a feature that is just an optional extra. I never use quick reply. You don't need it.

There's your whole problem, right there. What you need is a cheap and cheerful 200 quid PC just for web browsing. Even a machine of that price range has orders of magnitude more processing and image rasterizing power than the machine you are using. It'll run a modern browser quite happily.
Title: Re: What? No kvetching about the new header?
Post by: Wayne on May 27, 2009, 10:22:08 PM
@terminator.

I forget who said it, but it really is true that "this site is built for Amiga users, not for Amiga browsers".  Unfortunately most of the browsers on a machine that's been literally dead (as in off the market) for almost 15 years simply cannot handle even the simplest of tasks on the Internet any more, and I can't spend hundreds of hours backwards engineering this software to make it backward compatible with 2002 HTML without breaking 90% of the cool features that 99% of our users can now enjoy.

It hurts my feelings to have to draw that line, but I've explained why it was necessary until I'm literally sick (and angry) over having to continually explain it.

I do sincerely understand and accept your frustrations, but frankly Amiga.org now "is what it is" and you can either accept it, or not.  Continually insulting the work that we've put into this site is never going to change that.

The people you should REALLY be upset with is the Amiga browser authors who -- for all intents and purposes -- haven't update their product in almost 10 years.   *THEY* gave up on this community.

At least I'm still trying, and again, frankly, you have no idea how many nights I've stayed awake debating that fact..

Regards,

Wayne

Did you also read about the layout which isn't the greatest compared to old site (when viewed on amiga).  anyway i'm not having a good day, so i'm going to refrain from posting perhaps...

@Wayne
thanks for keeping up the site.
I can checkout a few things (even send photos of my screen on aweb/ibrowse) to help improve things.  The old a.org layout was better shown.  I don't mind using quote instead of quick reply etc.
I do believe that with some testing this can be improved?  (am i the only one that views this site at times on real Amiga???).  I believe, with the few improvements this site can look back the same way as the old one even on Amiga.

Besides, have you viewed this site on Amiga?  It's not like a lot of things are missing, just some improvements there and there and it will look as decent as the old site?  I also have had "layout" display issue on my peecee, but perhaps thats due to fact I refuse to update my Mozilla firefox.  I did send a screenshot of that to wayne though.  anyway if you're asking for feedback im sending it and willing to send / test things in order to improve things.  unless you're done with it.

If you mean Ibrowse/Aweb then one of those "improvements" is to remove all CSS based styles and replace with deprecated HTML formatting attributes. That is simply not going to happen. Why should Wayne or anybody else spend hours hacking away at perfectly good code to produce perfectly bad HTML that was deprecated ages ago? Nobody has written anything that produces that kind of HTML in years now. The web has left that kind of arcane nonsense well behind.

Actually, I have tried, but not since the first tests.

Why not muck around with VNC or RDesktop or something like that? You could then get your fullscreened firefox in a window on your workbench. Best of both worlds?

Thanks for the pickup on this one, but "backwards compatibility with 1993 browsers" is not a problem that we can fix without breaking 90% of the functionality enjoyed by 99% of our users now.

@terminator,

I never got a screenshot that I recall, but my only answer is that there's zero reason you shouldn't upgrade to Firefox 3, unless your PC is a Pentium III or lower.

As much as I would like, I just can't sacrifice "the good of the many for the good of the few (who refuse to upgrade), or the one".

As I said, I do accept your concerns, but hope you understand my position as well.

How about Firefox 1.0.4 having display issues? (I can email the screenshot)  During the first tests things seem to display fine.  Upgradign the browser means upgrading the entire linux distro, and i don't have the time for that.  Also, how does one show all the a.org postings I made in the past? (used to be displayed on bottom on the old a.org).  This was an easy way to track topics.

@Wayne
ok, I guess few individuals use Amiga to surf.  :-(
7 out of 1000 only??  The Aweb and Ibrowse have had some updates, so come on its not 1993 browser.
I understand your concerns, but can't we all be happy no matter what machines we are on?  (not like i'm asking 100% compatibility on Amiga).
Thanks for keeping up the site for so many years.

I hate to say it, but Fx 1.x is completely obsolete now. There's no official support for it anywhere. After all, 3.5 is almost out. Unless you are running a server and your boxes uptime is critical to you, I'd suggest you just install an entirely new version of the OS. I wouldn't even bother upgrading, just back up your /home directory someplace and make sure your new user gets the same user id as your existing one (or just chown the lot of it afterwards). If Fx 1 is the default version for your distro, it must be pretty old by now,

Complaining that a site doesn't render properly in Fx 1.x when the majority of users are on 3.x is like complaining an application for your amiga doesn't work as well under Kickstart 1.2 as it does on 3.9.

Don't know where that started, but Garamond, at least the Garamond I have loaded, is a completely different font.  The Font which created the Amiga logo (Commodore's text logo) was Bodoni.

Hi.

@Wayne

I found the change, there is no "beta" anymore, so this is going to be the logo

Well, for what it's worth, I'm getting used to the new header (especially as it shows up twice on AWeb... lol...)

I guess I would be the 8th person that uses an Amiga to check out A.org ... There are many websites that I can't visit AT ALL on my Amiga, so basically, as long as I can still read and post on A.org with an Amiga, I'm happy ..... even if the header gets re-done in Topaz in 'screaming orange' , or the Boing ball is replaced by a brussel sprout, or whatever...

Wayne, I can't even pretend to know what you went through to upgrade the site. Thanks for all the time and effort!

Peace, Y'all !

Logo looks good, although this thread intrigued me as I didn't know what kvetching meant. Turns out I'm not America, neither am I Jewish!! :-)
Taking me a while to get used to the new layout but liking it overall.

I can. I'm pretending right now - but I look really silly doing it.

I didn't know what kvetching meant either (and coincidentally, I'm not American or Jewish). I assumed "kvetching" had something to do with ketchup. I pictured a Jewish person saying, "Give me the kvetchup and be kvick about it."

(Hey! I can finally use the Multiquote feature. How convenient.)

Looking great! Now all it needs it something on the right side of the header, and I am sure that will come with time. :)
All in all this new Amiga.org is becoming a lot better than I feared, and actually better than I had dared to hope.

Love the new one , almost has an "The A-Team" feel to it.
Boy, I just love it when a logo comes together....

I just started humming The A-Team theme song. The only problem is, I hate that show. (8 guys shooting at each other with machine guns and NOBODY dies? Give me a break!)

I'd rather go with a Magnum P.I.-type font. Now THAT was a good show.

@  But I do enjoy surfing the net on my Amiga and my Amiga is cheerful.
Besides, have you viewed this site on Amiga?  It's not like a lot of things are missing, just some improvements there and there and it will look as decent as the old site?

I agree. The site isn't terrible now. I'm browsing and replying to this with my A2500 and iBrowse. And my Amiga is cheerful too, which helps me to be the same :-)
