Wanting Buy and Install GVP GForce 040 in my A2000 But!!!
« on: July 01, 2006, 12:06:43 AM »
Hello All,

Years ago I bought early version GForce 030 I think it was clocked at 22Mhz with 1 Meg Soldered on the board, But the thing would not boot with Kickstart 3.1 worked fine with 2.0 Kickstart Roms which I got screwed with as no one else wanted it.Thats why I am afraid to get this GForce 040 clocked at 33Mhz but again, will it work with 3.1 roms? As I want to install 3.9 I already have Amber board and Picasso 2 GFX Board doing nothing. Also did GVP improve the Scsi controller with this board, as my old board the controller really was {bleep}.Like to hear your comments Thanks Merv

The GForce040 is a much 'newer' board than the older 68030 combos running at 22MHz.  The board probably has version 4.1 of the Faastrom which works for me pretty good with harddisk and cdrom.  The Combo030 @22MHz I have doesn't seem to want to work with scsi drives.  The Faastrom is very old (can't remember the version).  I think the 040 boards are pretty good as far as the ones I've seen so you should be okay.  You could always find a rare GuruROM for the GVP boards, that'd be the ultimate and give you true DMA and other advanced scsi features.  Check out Ralph Babel's website for info on it.

I used to have a GForce 040 in my 2000 (motherboard rev 6.2). It worked very well with OS3.9BB2 (kickstart 3.1). I also used a CV64/3D, a Delfina Lite and a Multiface IO card. Everything worked very well. I don't know what was the revision of the rom though.

The only drawback I see is that the ram modules are expensive and hard to get. On my GForce 040, I had 16Mb of RAM. With OS3.9 and Picasso96 (that took away 4Mb for the CV64/3D), it left me only 11Mb after booting. It is not that much if you intend to do some internet surfing, playing MP3 or viewing images.

Odd - I am currently running a GVP G-Force 30, 25MHz with 13Mb of RAM on an A2000 with 3.1 ROMs, 3.5OS, that works fine. The motherboard is V6.10, I am not sure about the GVP version.. (I'll look if anyone is that interested)

Might be some clash with the driver in ROM on the GVP card being to old and using something 3.1 doesn't like.

Get someone to burn out the latest version of the ROM (gvpscsi.device) onto a new EPROM (so you keep the old one as backup) and give it a try then. An image of the latest version can be found here.
