Can't format new defined partitions
« on: February 05, 2017, 05:10:38 PM »
Hi,

I am trying to prepare a 4gb CF with WINuae and having lots of trouble doing this

First of all I cleaned the CF with the tool Diskpart.

I managed to partition the 4gb into two partitions with the HDtool.

The first I named DH0 (bootable) and the second DH1. Transfer rate = 1fe00

After a restart the first bootable partition pops up as DH0:NDOS and the second as Games? The last partition pops up as Games. I did formatted that partition as Games earlier with a different WINuae setup.

I would have expect that the second partition would be displayed as DH1:NDOS

When I try to format DH0 the format tool does not show up. I can't format it.

What could be wrong here?

Appreciate all the help!

If you recreate the entry in the partition table exactly as it was before, then the partition will appear again as it was before. Editing the partition table does not touch the actual partitions.

I don't undertstand what you mean by that. The Format program does not run? When you double click Sys:System/Format, it does not open? Nothing happens? What if you run it from a Shell?

format drive dh0: name Workbench noicons quick

My WINuae config is as follows:

- A500+
- Kickstart 2.04
- Fastmem 4mb
- WB 3.1

Tried a A600 config:

- Fastmem 4mb
- WB 3.1
- Kickstart 2.05

Same problem with the A600 config.

The format program does not start. Not when double clicking Sys:System/Format or from a Shell.

The strange thing is when I chose a A1200 with WB 3.1 it works!

Very strange and I don't have a glue what could be wrong?????

WB 3.1 requires Kickstart 3.0 or higher.

Thanks for your answer. Could that be the reason? :(

Where can I download older WB versions?

WINuae is driving me nuts at the moment!

I have cleaned my CF with diskpart and started  WINuae with the next config:

- A500+
- Kickstart 3.1
- WB 3.1
- Fastmem 4mb

When I start HDToolBox, my CF does not show up in the list.

Strange, because it worked before?

Instead of going back, you should be going forward.  Upgrade to 3.1/3.9 for an easier experience.  Unless of course, you enjoy banging your head against the wall.  ;)

I have a A500+ with the new ACA500plus and would like to prepare a 4gb CF and install games onto it.

I find it very strange why I don't see my CF in HDToolBox. It all worked before so I can't explain why it doesn't work anymore.

UPDATE:

I just installed WinUAE on my Windows 10 laptop and now I am having another problem with WinUAE. When I want to browse to my WB floppy, I get an error: WinUAE has stopped working....

Would really appreciate some help!

Are you certain the drive is added in WinUAE? Does WinUAE acknowlege it correctly?

As soon when I want to browse and virtually insert a WB floppy WinUAE crashes and stops working. Have downloaded the latest version.

I am almost at the point banging my head to the wall!

My guess is that the combination of WinUAE and Windows 10 is the problem.

On my desktop PC with Windows 7 I don't have the problem that WinUAE crashes, only that my CF is not regonized in HDToolBox.

I run Win10 Pro x64 and WinUAE with no issues at all so I think something else is causing the issue.

I actually use a CF Card to boot my WinUAE emulation of an A4000T as my actual A4000T boots off a CF Card as well and I was duplicating it's setup as close as possible.

Didn't this question already get answered elsewhere?  You shouldn't need any additional hardware to prep a CF card or copy files, with the new ACA500Plus.  I don't own one, but at least according to the product website everything you need to be able to do that is built-in.  ;)

Quote
"The ACA500plus comes with essential software pre-installed in it's large flash. This includes fully licensed Kickstart versions V1.2 and V1.3 for backwards-compatibility, and Kickstart V3.1 for running the final version of the OS that Commodore has published. You've lost your installation disks of the OS? Not a problem with the ACA500plus. A full installer for OS3.1 is included in the product. All you need is an empty CF card, and you can install OS3.1 with a few key presses. After that's done, you can use the second CF card slot to exchange data with a modern PC: The ACA500plus supports PC-formatted cards and long filenames out of the box, no special installation required."

I know and it is easy to install a 4gb CF with the new ACA500plus, but how do I install WB Classic Lite and install all the WHDLoad games onto my CF?

I have followed the following tutorial on Youtube to install WB Classic Lite with a A1200 config in WinUAE.

I assume you're asking because your A500 doesn't have an Internet connection to download the installer?

So, download on your PC, transfer to your Amiga via the second CF slot, and done. :)

Although IMHO I would avoid "Classic Workbench". Makes the system too un-Amiga-like, in my opinion, and can cause other issues if you're unfamiliar with the exact nature of the changes. Check out "BetterWB" if you really want some kind of upgrade pack, instead.  My .02 cents. ;)
